Assess a crypto token by checking what it does, what rights it gives, who controls it, how its supply and market work, and how you would hold or sell it—not by relying on its name, price, or promotion. A careful review cannot eliminate the possibility of losing your entire investment, but it can expose claims you cannot verify and risks you may not be willing to take.
1. Identify the exact token and what it promises
Confirm the asset, network, and contract
Write down the token’s full name, ticker, network, and contract address. Verify these details through an authoritative project or network source; matching names or tickers do not prove that two listings refer to the same asset. A wrong contract address can lead you to investigate—or buy—a different token from the one you intended.

Separate the token’s function from its pitch
Ask what the token actually does, what rights or access it gives, and who can change the software or rules. Some tokens may be described as commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins, or securities, but a label does not establish the token’s legal treatment or explain its risks. The SEC’s 2026 materials describe these categories while emphasizing fact-specific analysis.

2. Test whether the use case is real and the evidence is independent
Distinguish what works now from what is promised
Compare the current product or network with its roadmap. Look for evidence that people can use the claimed service today, and ask whether the token is necessary for that use or whether a substitute exists. Even a functioning product does not by itself show that demand for the product will create demand for its token.
Verify claims rather than counting endorsements
Treat a white paper, exchange listing, large social following, audit badge, or reserve attestation as a claim to examine, not proof of safety. Prefer evidence that can be checked independently of the token’s promoters. The SEC’s investor bulletin on proof of reserves warns that such reports and the reviews behind them are not equivalent to financial-statement audits.
Record what you could not verify. If an important claim relies only on a promoter’s statement, it remains uncertain even if the presentation is polished.

3. Check supply, allocation, governance, and control
Understand how the token supply can change
Find out whether supply has a stated maximum or can expand, how new tokens are issued, and what the issuance schedule is. Check allocations to insiders, the treasury, and other large holders, along with any lockups and scheduled unlocks. An unlock can increase the amount eligible to trade; it does not establish that holders will sell.

Find the people or mechanisms with power
Determine who can mint or freeze tokens, upgrade contracts, or otherwise alter token behavior. Compare disclosed allocations with credible information about actual ownership concentration where available. Note when ownership or control cannot be independently verified. SEC investor alerts identify concentrated or opaque ownership and control structures as risks in crypto-asset securities contexts.
4. Assess whether you could exit the market
A displayed price or reported trading volume does not tell you how much you could sell at that price. Check whether trading occurs on multiple independent venues, whether liquidity appears adequate for the size of transaction you might make, and whether a venue can restrict trading, limit withdrawals, or delist the asset.
Consider volatility, slippage—the difference between an expected price and the price a trade actually receives—and the possibility that buyers or trading venues disappear. SEC investor materials identify volatility, illiquidity, and the possibility of a market disappearing as crypto-asset risks. A token you cannot sell when you need cash may be a poor fit even if its quoted price has not changed.
5. Consider legal and regulatory uncertainty
Ask who issued or promoted the token, where and how it was offered, and what rights or promises accompanied its sale. Do not conclude that a token is or is not a security based solely on its name, a promoter’s description, or a checklist. Legal treatment depends on the facts and jurisdiction.

The cited SEC materials address US law, not the rules that apply everywhere. As of October 4, 2026, SEC materials describe a token taxonomy and explain how some crypto assets that are not themselves securities may be offered subject to an investment contract, and may later separate from that contract under specified circumstances. The result depends on the particular facts.
The SEC’s “Regulation Crypto Assets” page describes a rule proposed in August 2026, with comments due October 20, 2026. It is a proposal, not a final effective rule. A proposal should not be treated as settled law.
6. Compare the risks of holding it
Custodial platform
If a platform holds the token for you, read its customer agreement. Find out what legal claim you have to the assets, whether the platform may lend or reuse them, how withdrawals work, what fees apply, and what the agreement says about insolvency. A crypto interest-bearing account is not equivalent to a bank or credit-union deposit; it can expose assets to lending, insolvency, fraud, or operational failure. The SEC’s custody bulletin discusses these risks.
Self-custody
With self-custody, you are responsible for access keys and their backups. A wallet manages keys; it does not itself store the crypto asset. Learn how recovery works before transferring funds, including what happens if a device is lost, damaged, or compromised. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin says: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” Losing access can leave you unable to use the assets, while exposing a key can let someone else take control.

Custody trade-offs
| Factor | Custodial platform | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access keys | The platform generally manages access for you; check the agreement to understand your rights. | You manage the keys and their backups. |
| Recovery and access | Access depends on the platform’s procedures and the terms governing withdrawals. | Recovery depends on the backup and recovery process you set up. |
| Additional exposure | Platform, counterparty, insolvency, and operational risks. | Loss, theft, or compromise of keys; mistakes may be difficult to reverse. |
| Operational burden and fees | Check the platform’s terms and fee schedule. | You handle key security and transactions; applicable fees depend on the wallet and network. |
Neither holding method removes the token’s price, liquidity, legal, or project risks.
Direct ownership versus a bitcoin or ether ETP
If you are comparing direct ownership with an exchange-traded product (ETP), distinguish the product’s exposure from owning tokens directly. The SEC bulletin cited here covers bitcoin and ether ETPs only; do not assume it applies to every token or product.
| Factor | Direct token ownership | Bitcoin or ether ETP |
|---|---|---|
| Custody and platform exposure | Depends on whether you use self-custody or a custodian. | Uses a product wrapper and its associated providers and terms. |
| Key management | Required if you self-custody; otherwise, check the custodian’s terms. | You generally hold product shares rather than managing token keys directly. |
| Fees | Depend on the wallet, network, and any platform used. | Product fees apply; review the product documents. |
| Trading and price exposure | Token trading depends on available crypto venues and their conditions. | Trading takes place through the product’s market; check its trading hours and how closely it tracks the underlying exposure. |
| Risk trade-off | Direct access can involve wallet and crypto-platform risks. | The wrapper may reduce some direct wallet and platform risks but adds product-specific risks and fees. |
The SEC describes bitcoin and ether ETPs as speculative and volatile. An ETP is not a way to remove the underlying price risk.

7. Screen for fraud and pressure
Independently verify the identity and registration claims of people and entities involved. Be especially cautious when someone approaches you unexpectedly and then builds a relationship before pitching an investment, impersonates an official or expert, promises guaranteed returns, pressures you to act quickly, or tells you to send crypto to an address they provide.

Do not rely on contact details or links supplied by the person making the pitch to verify their identity. The SEC warns that crypto scam proceeds can be difficult to trace and recover.
8. Write down what could go wrong before deciding
Before investing, write a short case against your own thesis. State what evidence would disprove it, what could make the token unusable or untradeable, how much you could lose, and what reliable source you would monitor for changes. Include practical failure cases such as a product never launching, a control change, a venue halting trading, or a platform restricting withdrawals.
The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert states: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” This is a general investor warning, not individualized financial advice; it does not establish whether a particular token suits your circumstances.
