Re:

How to Assess a Stock’s Sensitivity to Interest Rate Changes

Assess interest-rate sensitivity by separating valuation, business financing, and risk-premium effects, then estimating a stock’s historical response to a clearly defined rate shock.

There is no single, permanent number that tells you how a stock will respond when interest rates move. A useful assessment separates three forces: changes in the rate used to discount future cash flows, changes in the company’s cash flows and financing costs, and changes in the equity risk premium. Then it estimates the stock’s past response to a clearly defined rate shock while accounting for broad-market movements. Treat the result as a model- and period-specific estimate, not a forecast.

What “interest-rate sensitivity” means

A stock’s rate sensitivity is its estimated response to a specified interest-rate change. The word “specified” matters: an unexpected cut in the overnight policy rate, a rise in a 10-year Treasury yield, and a parallel upward shift across the yield curve are different shocks. They can occur for different reasons and affect companies through different channels.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A stock-price change after a rate move is not necessarily caused by the rate alone. An announcement can also change investors’ expectations about growth, inflation, company earnings, or the compensation they demand for taking equity risk. A historical correlation between a stock and a yield therefore does not, by itself, isolate a causal effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is useful to distinguish a stock’s discount-rate exposure—how its value might respond if the discount rate changed while expected cash flows and risk premiums stayed fixed—from its total observed response, which includes changes in those other factors. The first helps explain the mechanism; the second is what a return study attempts to estimate.

That distinction helps answer a common practical question: which stocks are more interest-rate sensitive? There is no dependable shortcut based only on sector, dividend yield, or one balance-sheet figure. A useful answer combines a company’s likely exposure with an empirical estimate tied to a named shock and period. Even then, the answer is conditional: it describes how the stock behaved under the chosen model and sample, not what it must do next time.

The three channels to assess

1. Discount rates and the timing of cash flows

In a discounted-cash-flow framework, a company’s value depends on expected future cash flows and the rate used to discount them. The Federal Reserve Board stated in 2021: “The discount rate for a risky asset equals the interest rate on a safe asset plus a risk premium, which compensates investors for the risk of losses from holding the risky asset.” A change in a safe rate can affect the discount rate, but it is only one part of the valuation.

Equity duration is a useful way to reason about the timing of expected cash flows. All else equal, cash flows expected farther in the future contribute more discount-rate exposure than cash flows arriving sooner. Higher expected growth can also make a greater share of a company’s perceived value depend on future cash flows. A company with larger near-term dividends may have less duration-style exposure, all else equal. These are analytical tendencies, not reliable rules for predicting the total return of any particular stock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Duration-style reasoning holds other inputs constant. In practice, expectations about cash flows and risk premiums can change at the same time as rates, so this concept is not a complete causal estimate of a stock’s sensitivity.

Use duration as a question-generating tool rather than a score. For example, ask whether the valuation appears to rely more on distant growth or on cash generated and distributed soon. Then ask whether a rate shock could also change the expected cash flows themselves. A longer-dated cash-flow profile suggests one possible valuation channel, but it does not establish the sign or magnitude of the total stock-return response.

2. Cash flows, borrowing, and financing

Rates can affect the business itself. Debt that must be refinanced may become more expensive, and a company that relies on external financing may face different investment costs or access to capital. Meanwhile, the economic conditions accompanying a rate move can affect sales, costs, and expected growth. The direction and size of these effects depend on the company’s financing, operations, and the cause of the rate change.

Do not use a sector label, dividend yield, or debt balance as a stand-in for this analysis. Compare refinancing needs and external-capital dependence with the timing of expected cash flows and the company’s exposure to growth and inflation. A trait can point to a possible channel without determining the net stock-price response.

Separate the amount of debt from the timing and terms of financing exposure. A debt balance alone does not tell you when obligations mature or whether refinancing is near-term. Likewise, external-capital dependence is a distinct consideration: a company may need financing to support investment even if its existing debt is not the only relevant exposure. These factors should be compared alongside operating sensitivity, since a rate move that accompanies changing growth or inflation expectations can affect both the cost side and the revenue side of a business.

3. Equity risk premiums

The risk premium is the additional return investors require for bearing risk. It can change alongside interest rates, including when a policy announcement changes views about economic conditions or uncertainty. Since equity prices reflect both expected cash flows and the discount rate applied to them, a move in a Treasury yield alone cannot reveal how much of a stock’s price change came from the risk-free component, the risk premium, or revised cash-flow expectations.

This is why a simple chart of a stock and a yield is a useful first look but not a complete assessment. If both move around the same time, the chart cannot identify which of the three channels was responsible, whether the movement was anticipated, or whether broad-market news explains part of the stock return.

Start by defining the rate shock

Before comparing companies or estimating a response, write down which rate measure and event you mean. The appropriate measure depends on the question; different shocks should not be combined into one generic “rates” variable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Rate measure or shock What it describes What to keep in mind
Unexpected overnight policy-rate change A surprise component of a central-bank policy decision. Policy news can also alter expectations for growth, inflation, and risk premiums. A measured response is not automatically a pure discount-rate effect.
Change in a long-term Treasury yield A move in a longer-maturity government borrowing rate. It is not interchangeable with a policy-rate surprise; the maturity and event window need to be specified.
Parallel yield-curve shift A modeled shift in yields across maturities. State that the shock is parallel. A study of this shock does not establish the response to every real-world curve move.
Steepening or flattening A change in the relationship between shorter- and longer-term yields. Specify which part of the curve moved and by how much; a curve-shape change is not the same as a parallel shift.

Also state whether the change is an observed rate move or an identified surprise. Expected rate changes may already be reflected in stock prices before an announcement. For a surprise-based estimate, the event definition must separate the unexpected component from what markets had anticipated.

Keep the unit and direction visible in your notes. A basis-point shock is not the same description as a percentage change in a yield, and a cut is not interchangeable with a rise. If the question is about the response to an unexpected policy move, do not quietly substitute the full observed yield change. If the question is about a curve shift, record whether it is parallel or a change in curve shape. The more precisely the shock is named, the easier it is to interpret and reproduce the estimate.

Compare the company’s exposure before looking at past returns

For two or more stocks, assess the same set of business and valuation characteristics. Use like-for-like information and do not assume that a single trait explains the result.

  • Cash-flow timing and growth: Ask how much of the valuation depends on cash flows expected farther in the future, and how much depends on near-term performance.
  • Dividends and payout: Record current dividends and payout characteristics as context for the timing of cash returned to shareholders—not as a standalone sensitivity score.
  • Debt and refinancing: Examine leverage, debt maturities, and refinancing needs. A company with borrowing exposure may be affected through financing costs as well as valuation.
  • External financing: Consider whether the business depends on raising capital to fund operations or investment.
  • Operating exposure: Assess how revenues and costs may respond to the economic growth and inflation conditions that accompany the rate shock.
  • Historical response: Estimate the return response to the same defined shock, over the same event window and sample period, with the same broad-market control.

Observable characteristics are a starting point, not a full explanation. A 2026 Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report by Thomas Drechsel, Davide Melcangi, Laura Pilossoph, and Daniel Lewis associated a strong investment response to monetary policy with about 5% of firm-time observations. That result concerns firms’ investment responses, not the sensitivity of their stock returns. It is a reminder that firms’ responses are heterogeneous, not a statistic to use as a stock-screening threshold.

For a disciplined comparison, use the same questions for every company rather than choosing traits after seeing the return result. Record the expected cash-flow profile, dividends and payout, financing needs, and operating exposure, then estimate each stock against the same shock definition and market control. If these characteristics point in different directions, preserve that mixed picture instead of forcing the stock into a simple “rate-sensitive” or “rate-insensitive” category.

Additional checks for banks

For a bank, include the maturity and repricing mismatch between assets and liabilities, deposit composition, size, leverage, wholesale funding, and uninsured deposits. The effect of higher rates cannot be inferred from the claim that they improve net interest margins: valuation, asset values, expected profits, and growth can move in other directions.

A 2012 study by researchers at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System estimated that an unexpected 25-basis-point parallel upward yield-curve shift was followed by a 2.0–2.5% decline in average bank share value. That is a study-specific estimate for the shock and sample examined, not a rule for all banks or a prediction for a current bank. The study identified multiple channels, including valuation, asset values, expected profits, and growth.

For bank comparisons, do not stop at “higher rates help” or “higher rates hurt.” The observed response depends on the interaction of the bank’s asset and liability exposures, its funding mix, and the other valuation and profit channels captured in the study. Compare those bank-specific characteristics between institutions, and keep the cited 2.0–2.5% estimate attached to its defined parallel shift rather than generalizing it to any rate increase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2025 Federal Reserve Board note reported that a five-factor model explained about 80% of variation in banks’ excess returns. That is the explanatory fit of the cited bank-return model; it is not the share of bank returns explained by interest rates alone and does not provide an interest-rate sensitivity coefficient.

Estimate a historical response

A practical stock-level assessment can use an event study or regression. The essential design is to relate the stock’s returns to an identified rate shock while controlling for broad-market returns. The output is an estimate for a particular measure, sample, and model—not a universal sensitivity value.

  1. Choose the outcome and frequency. Decide whether to use daily or another return frequency, and specify whether the outcome is the stock’s return or its return relative to a broad market. Use the same choice when comparing stocks.
  2. Define the shock measure. Select the policy-rate surprise, Treasury-yield move, parallel shift, or curve-shape change that matches the question. State how the surprise is identified if you use one.
  3. Set the event window and sample dates. A narrow window around a defined announcement and a longer-period regression answer different questions. Record the dates and window, and avoid treating results from different windows as directly comparable.
  4. Account for broad-market returns. Include broad-market performance as a control so that a stock’s general movement with the market is not mistaken for its response to the rate shock.
  5. Estimate and report the relationship. Describe the estimated response in the units of the chosen shock and return measure. State the model, sample, shock definition, frequency, event window, and uncertainty alongside the result.
  6. Check stability. Compare sensible windows or periods to see whether the estimate changes across regimes. If it does, report that variation rather than selecting one coefficient as though it were permanent.

For example, a result should be described as a historical estimate for a stated stock, shock definition, event window, sample period, and model. Without those details, a percentage response is hard to interpret or compare. An association based on ordinary rate movements should also be distinguished from a response estimated using identified surprises.

Broad-market control matters because a stock can move with the overall market for reasons unrelated to its particular rate exposure. Controlling for broad-market returns does not solve every identification problem, but it helps distinguish a company-specific response from a general market move. Be explicit about whether the reported outcome is the raw stock return or a market-relative measure, since those are not identical descriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not read the coefficient in isolation. Put it beside the shock size, the return units, the event window, and the sample. A finding from a short announcement window is about response around those events; a longer-period estimate summarizes a broader set of movements and may mix more channels. Comparing multiple reasonable windows or periods is a way to see whether the estimate appears stable, not a reason to select whichever number best fits a preferred conclusion.

What historical estimates can—and cannot—tell you

Historical research provides useful reference points, but aggregate or sector estimates should not be carried over to an individual company. Bernanke and Kuttner’s 2003 Federal Reserve Bank of New York study, using data from June 1989 through December 2002, estimated roughly a 1% increase in the CRSP value-weighted index for a typical unexpected 25-basis-point rate cut. This is an aggregate historical estimate, not a forecast for a particular stock or a promise that every cut produces the same return.

The bank estimate above concerns average bank share values after a specified parallel upward shift; it does not give a current coefficient for every bank. These examples also use different shocks and populations, so their percentages are not a like-for-like comparison. Always retain the study’s shock, sample, and subject when citing an estimate.

Stock-return data alone cannot show exactly how much of a move came from the risk-free rate, expected future income, or the equity risk premium. A policy surprise may carry information about the economy as well as borrowing costs. Accordingly, a historical relationship is evidence about a defined sample and model, not proof that rates caused every observed move or that the same response will recur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2003 aggregate result and 2012 bank result illustrate why the label and context belong next to any number. One is an estimate for a broad value-weighted index after a typical unexpected policy-rate cut during a stated historical sample; the other is an estimated average bank-share response to an unexpected parallel upward shift. They differ in population and shock, so subtracting or ranking their percentages would not answer which individual stock is more sensitive.

There is no single stock-level coefficient that stays valid regardless of rate measure, shock identification, event window, period, and model. The New York Fed’s 2026 firm-heterogeneity finding concerns investment responses rather than share returns, but it reinforces a related caution: observable company characteristics do not explain every difference in response. Use factor- or trait-based screening as an initial comparison, then report the limits of the empirical estimate.

A like-for-like comparison worksheet

When assessing two stocks, keep the comparison consistent. Fill in the same fields for each company, using the same rate shock, event window, and market control for the empirical estimate.

Comparison field What to record
Rate shock Rate measure, shock direction and size, and whether the change is an identified surprise.
Cash-flow profile Expected timing and growth of cash flows; near-term dividends and payout.
Financing Leverage, refinancing needs, and reliance on external capital.
Business exposure How revenue and costs may respond to growth and inflation conditions associated with the shock.
Historical estimate Return measure, market control, event window, sample dates, model, estimate, and uncertainty.
Bank-specific factors, if applicable Asset-liability maturity or repricing mismatch, deposit composition, size, leverage, wholesale funding, and uninsured deposits.

If a company’s profile suggests one kind of exposure but its estimated historical response points another way, do not force the evidence into a single label. Check whether the rate shock, period, and model capture the channel you are trying to assess. The empirical literature shows that company traits do not explain all differences in sensitivity.

A useful final comparison sentence can be deliberately narrow: under the same defined shock, sample, event window, and market control, one stock had a larger estimated historical response than the other; its business characteristics suggest these possible channels; and the estimate may not hold in another period. That format separates what the model measured from what the company profile suggests, without turning either into a promise.

How to interpret the result responsibly

  • Call the estimate historical and specify the period, shock, model, and event window.
  • Separate discount-rate reasoning from the stock’s total observed response.
  • Do not infer a fixed price move from a rate change or treat one historical coefficient as a forecast.
  • Compare stocks only when the rate measure, sample, and controls are consistent.
  • Use company characteristics to frame questions about exposure, not to replace an empirical estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are good ways to identify which stocks are more interest-rate sensitive?

Compare cash-flow timing and growth, dividends and payout, leverage and refinancing needs, reliance on external financing, and how revenues and costs may react to growth and inflation conditions. Then estimate each stock’s response to the same defined rate shock, using the same sample, event window, and broad-market control. No single trait or sector label provides a complete answer.

Is a high-dividend stock less sensitive to interest rates?

Larger near-term dividends can imply less duration-style discount-rate exposure, all else equal, because more cash is returned sooner. But dividend yield is not a standalone sensitivity measure: cash-flow expectations, financing, operating conditions, and the equity risk premium can all affect the total stock response.

Do higher rates always help bank stocks?

No. A 2012 Federal Reserve study estimated a 2.0–2.5% decline in average bank share value after an unexpected 25-basis-point parallel upward yield-curve shift. The estimate is specific to its study and shock. Bank responses also depend on asset-liability repricing, deposit composition, funding, valuation, asset values, expected profits, and growth.

What is a credible historical example of stocks responding to rate changes?

Bernanke and Kuttner’s 2003 Federal Reserve Bank of New York study estimated roughly a 1% increase in the CRSP value-weighted index for a typical unexpected 25-basis-point rate cut, using data from June 1989 through December 2002. It is an aggregate historical estimate, not a forecast for an individual company. The Federal Reserve Board’s 2021 explanation of the risky-asset discount rate and the Board’s 2012 bank study provide related context, but each addresses a different question.

Can I use a stock’s past correlation with Treasury yields as its sensitivity?

Treat it as a descriptive starting point, not a causal estimate. A yield move may coincide with changing expectations for growth, inflation, cash flows, or risk premiums. A more useful estimate defines the rate shock and window, uses stock returns as the outcome, controls for broad-market returns, and states the period and model.

The Bottom Line

Assess rate sensitivity by naming the shock, tracing valuation, cash-flow and financing, and risk-premium channels, then estimating a historical response with a broad-market control. Keep the result attached to its sample and model: it is a conditional estimate, not a permanent stock trait or a forecast.
