You can apply for Social Security spouse’s benefits online if you are within three months of turning 62 or are already 62 or older, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at a local Social Security office. Before applying, check that you meet the relationship and eligibility rules, understand how a benefit on your own work record affects the payment, and ask SSA how the deemed-filing rules apply to your birth date. Gather the information you have, but do not put off applying just because a document is missing.

The main decisions are whether you meet the rules for a current spouse, which application route works for you, and how a spouse benefit would interact with your own retirement benefit. The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates your individual record and circumstances, so its general examples are a starting point—not a prediction of your payment.

Check whether you may qualify on your current spouse’s record

A current spouse may qualify for spouse’s benefits if the worker is receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits and the applicant is at least 62. A spouse of any age may also qualify while caring for the worker’s child who is under 16 or has a disability and is entitled to benefits on that worker’s record.

These are alternative age and child-related paths to consider. If you are 62 or older, the age condition may be relevant; if you are younger, the child-in-care condition may be relevant. In either case, the worker’s benefit status matters. Having a spouse who worked and paid Social Security taxes, by itself, does not establish that you can receive a spouse benefit now: SSA’s general guidance says the worker generally must be receiving retirement or disability benefits.

For the child-in-care path, the relevant child must be the worker’s child, under 16 or have a disability, and entitled to benefits on the worker’s record. The rule described here is not simply that you have a child in your household or that a child is receiving benefits on some other person’s record. If a child’s age, disability, or entitlement is part of your eligibility, explain those facts to SSA and ask the agency to assess them against the worker’s record.

Age and the worker’s benefit status are not the only factors SSA may consider. The agency’s rules include relationship-duration and other relationship conditions. If your marriage history or current circumstances are unusual, ask SSA to assess your specific situation rather than relying on a general checklist. The SSA handbook’s detailed relationship material was last revised in 2009, so complicated cases warrant confirmation with the agency under its current guidance.

That caution is useful if the facts behind your marriage or relationship do not fit a straightforward current marriage. Do not assume that a general age rule settles every relationship question, or that an older handbook description is the final word on your particular case. Give SSA the relevant facts and ask which relationship conditions apply.

These are rules for a claim based on a current spouse. A divorced person may be eligible on a former spouse’s record under separate rules, including a general requirement that the marriage lasted at least 10 years. Do not assume that a rule for a divorced-spouse claim also governs a current-spouse application. SSA’s Form SSA-2 information page lists a final divorce decree for a divorced-spouse claim; that is distinct from the marriage certificate it may request for a current-spouse claim.

Choose how to apply

The Social Security Administration’s Form SSA-2 information page identifies three ways to apply for spouse’s benefits. Online filing is available if you are within three months of turning 62 or are already 62 or older. You can also apply by calling SSA or by visiting a local Social Security office.

  • Online: Apply through SSA’s online application if you meet the age condition above. If you are younger than 62 and think you may qualify because you are caring for a qualifying child, contact SSA by phone or through a local office to discuss how to apply.
  • By phone: Call 1-800-772-1213. The TTY number listed by SSA is 1-800-325-0778. A call is also a way to ask which information or documents SSA needs in your particular case.
  • In person: Visit a local Social Security office. SSA says an appointment is not required, though scheduling ahead may reduce waiting.

The online age condition is a condition for that application route; it is not a statement that everyone younger than 62 is ineligible. The child-in-care rule described above can apply at any age, so a person who is younger than 62 should not conclude from the online threshold alone that there is no possible claim. Use the phone or office route to ask SSA about the appropriate next step.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, how the benefit would interact with your own retirement benefit, or whether an exception applies to you, contacting SSA before or during the application can help clarify which facts the agency needs. The available routes are the same whether you start online, by phone, or at an office; the documents SSA requests can depend on your circumstances.

SSA says an appointment is not required for an office visit. Scheduling ahead may reduce waiting, but the agency’s instruction not to delay an application for missing documents is important whichever route you choose. If you begin by phone or online and SSA needs more information, be prepared to follow its instructions for supplying it. The form information page does not say that every applicant will need every listed document.

Gather the information SSA may request

SSA may ask for documents that establish your identity, work history, military service, or marriage. Its Form SSA-2 information page lists the following possible items:

  • Proof of birth.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you were born outside the United States.
  • Military discharge papers for service before 1968.
  • Your last year’s W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns.
  • A marriage certificate.

For a divorced-spouse claim, SSA lists the final divorce decree; that item applies to a different claim category from benefits on a current spouse’s record. SSA says it accepts photocopies of W-2s, self-employment tax returns, or medical records. Most other documents must be originals, which SSA says it will return.

Use the list as preparation, not as a reason to hold an application until you have assembled a perfect file. SSA says it may ask for the items relevant to your circumstances, and the list includes different kinds of evidence. For example, military discharge papers are listed for service before 1968, while proof of citizenship or lawful alien status is listed if you were born outside the United States. If an item does not seem relevant or you do not have it, tell SSA rather than guessing that it disqualifies you.

Pay attention to the distinction between documents SSA accepts as photocopies and documents it generally requires as originals. The page specifically names W-2s, self-employment tax returns, and medical records as items for which photocopies are accepted. It says most other documents must be originals and will be returned. If you are uncertain whether a copy is acceptable for a particular item, ask SSA before sending it.

Do not wait for every document

Missing paperwork should not stop you from starting an application. SSA’s Form SSA-2 information page says: “Do not delay applying for benefits because you do not have all the documents. We will help you get them.” Apply with the information you have and tell SSA what is missing; the agency can help obtain documents it needs.

This instruction addresses a common practical worry: whether it is better to wait until every certificate, record, or form is in hand. SSA’s answer is not to delay just because you are missing something. Starting the process does not mean you should conceal gaps or assume that SSA will not need proof. Instead, identify what you have, be clear about what is missing, and follow up on the agency’s requests.

Keep the claim category clear when you talk with SSA. A marriage certificate is among the documents that may be requested for a current-spouse application. A final divorce decree appears on SSA’s list for a divorced-spouse claim. If your relationship history includes facts that make the category uncertain, explain them and ask the agency which claim rules and documents apply.

Understand how your own retirement benefit affects the payment

The unreduced spouse’s benefit can be up to one-half of the worker’s benefit at the worker’s full retirement age. That is a ceiling for the spouse benefit, not a promise that every applicant will receive half of the worker’s current check. Claiming a spouse’s benefit before your own full retirement age permanently reduces that spouse benefit.

Two details in that comparison matter. First, the reference point for the maximum is the worker’s benefit at the worker’s full retirement age, not necessarily the amount of the worker’s current monthly check. Second, “up to half” describes the maximum unreduced spouse benefit under the guidance; it is not an estimate for a particular household. SSA must evaluate the records and the applicant’s age at filing to determine the amount due.

If you qualify for retirement benefits on your own work record as well, SSA pays your own benefit first. If the spouse benefit due is higher, SSA adds a spouse supplement so that the combined payment reaches the applicable higher amount; it does not simply pay two full benefits on top of each other.

SSA illustrates the calculation with an example: Sandy’s own retirement amount is $1,000, and the spouse amount in the example is $1,250. SSA pays the $1,000 on Sandy’s record and adds $250, for a total of $1,250. This is an illustration, not a typical, guaranteed, or individually predictive benefit amount. Your own records, eligibility, and claiming age determine your result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The example is useful because it shows the difference between a total benefit and a supplement. The $250 is the added spouse amount in that illustration; it is not a second full payment of $1,250 on top of Sandy’s $1,000. If your own retirement amount is already higher than the spouse amount that could apply to you, the example does not mean you should expect an additional payment. Ask SSA to compare the amounts on your records rather than applying the illustration as a formula to your situation.

Claiming age is another part of the comparison. The unreduced spouse benefit may be as much as half of the worker’s full-retirement-age amount, but claiming before your own full retirement age permanently reduces the spouse benefit. The amount and the timing decision therefore cannot be separated: the number you might receive depends in part on when you claim. SSA’s general information does not provide enough information to calculate an individual amount without the relevant records and circumstances.

Check deemed filing before choosing when to claim

Deemed filing affects whether you can apply for a spouse’s benefit while delaying your own retirement benefit. For people born on or after January 2, 1954, SSA generally treats an application for retirement or spouse’s benefits as an application for both benefits when the person qualifies for both. As a result, an eligible person in this group generally cannot claim only a spouse’s benefit and leave their own retirement benefit unclaimed in order to earn delayed retirement credits.

This is a question to check before you choose which benefit to apply for, not just after SSA has made an award. SSA frames the issue directly: “Can I apply only for spouse’s benefits and delay filing for my own retirement benefit to earn delayed retirement credits?” For people born on or after January 2, 1954, its general answer is that an application for one benefit is treated as an application for both when they qualify for both. Do not assume you can select only the spouse benefit and postpone your own retirement claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rule is birth-date dependent. Check your date of birth against January 2, 1954, and tell SSA whether you may qualify on both records. The word “generally” matters: SSA describes exceptions, including some child-in-care and disability cases. Whether an exception applies depends on the facts; do not treat a possible exception as automatic just because a child or disability is involved.

Before choosing a filing date, verify your birth date, whether you qualify on both records, and whether an exception may apply with SSA. The Social Security retirement planner and SSA’s Program Operations Manual System policy on deemed filing describe the rule and its exceptions. If you have a child-in-care or disability circumstance, raise it explicitly when you contact the agency and ask how it affects deemed filing for your particular claim.

Deemed filing and the spouse-benefit calculation answer different questions. The calculation concerns how a payment on your own record and any spouse supplement fit together. Deemed filing concerns whether applying for one benefit also counts as applying for the other when you qualify for both. You may need answers to both questions before deciding how and when to file.

Use this checklist before you contact SSA

  1. Confirm the basic facts: Determine whether you meet the age or child-in-care condition, and whether your spouse is receiving retirement or disability benefits.
  2. Flag relationship questions: Be ready to explain your marriage history and ask SSA to review any atypical circumstances.
  3. Compare the benefit records: Find out how a benefit on your own work record would interact with a spouse’s benefit and how your age at filing affects the spouse amount.
  4. Ask about deemed filing: Give SSA your birth date and ask whether applying for one benefit would also count as applying for the other, or whether an exception could apply.
  5. Choose an application route: Use SSA’s online application if you meet its age condition, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or contact a local office.
  6. Bring or provide available documents: Use SSA’s list to prepare, but start the application even if some documents are not yet available.

You can make this checklist practical by separating what you know from what you need SSA to decide. For example, note your birth date, whether your spouse is already receiving retirement or disability benefits, whether a qualifying child is part of the situation, and which listed documents you have. Then identify the questions that depend on SSA’s review, such as whether your marriage history meets the relationship conditions or whether a deemed-filing exception applies.

The checklist is not a substitute for filing or an exhaustive list of eligibility rules. It is a way to prepare for a conversation or application without treating general online information as a final decision. If you lack one of the documents, SSA expressly says not to delay applying for that reason.

What to ask SSA if your case is not straightforward

A short, focused conversation can help you avoid making assumptions about eligibility or the amount. When you contact SSA, explain the facts that can change how the rules apply and ask for answers specific to your record.

  • “Does my marriage history meet the relationship conditions for benefits on my current spouse’s record?”
  • “Does my spouse’s current retirement or disability benefit status allow me to apply now?”
  • “How would my own retirement benefit and any spouse supplement be calculated?”
  • “How would filing before my full retirement age affect the spouse benefit?”
  • “Does deemed filing apply to me, based on my birth date and the benefits I may qualify for?”
  • “Could a child-in-care or disability exception apply in my situation?”

These questions are especially useful when your eligibility depends on a child entitled on the worker’s record, a disability, or an unusual relationship history. SSA’s general descriptions explain the framework, but it must evaluate your individual facts and records to determine eligibility and payment.

You can also ask SSA which documents it needs next, whether a photocopy is acceptable for a specific item, and how to provide a document you do not currently have. The agency’s list is a set of possible requests, not a reason to guess what is required in every case. The official instruction is to apply without delay if you are missing documents and let SSA help obtain what it needs.

What the general rules can—and cannot—tell you

The general guidance helps you identify the right questions: whether you meet an age or child-in-care path; whether the worker is receiving retirement or disability benefits; what relationship conditions apply; how your own benefit may affect the total; and whether deemed filing applies. It does not establish your final eligibility or calculate a personal payment. SSA must review the records and facts of your claim.

Likewise, the $1,000-plus-$250 example is an illustration of how a supplement can bring an own-record payment up to a higher applicable spouse amount. It is not an average, a guaranteed payment, or a prediction for people in a similar situation. The official pages cited here do not provide a population statistic necessary to estimate what an applicant is likely to receive. Use SSA’s review of your records for an individual comparison.

For a current-spouse application, keep the process straightforward: check the basic conditions, choose an available route, provide the information you have, and ask SSA about the issues that depend on your own facts. If you may also qualify on your own record, do not make a timing decision without checking how the amount, early-claim reduction, and deemed-filing rule fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for Social Security spouse’s benefits on my current spouse’s record?

SSA says you can apply online if you are within three months of age 62 or are already 62 or older, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or visit a local Social Security office. SSA says an appointment is not required, though scheduling ahead may reduce waiting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I apply for spouse’s benefits before age 62?

The age-based path generally starts at 62, but a spouse may qualify at any age while caring for the worker’s child who is under 16 or has a disability and is entitled to benefits on the worker’s record. Contact SSA to discuss that situation and how to apply; the online application age condition is not the same as a complete eligibility rule.

Does my spouse have to be receiving Social Security benefits?

SSA’s general guidance says the worker generally must be receiving retirement or disability benefits for a current spouse to qualify. Ask SSA to review the worker’s status and your circumstances before assuming you can receive a payment.

What documents should I prepare for a spouse-benefit application?

SSA may request proof of birth; proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you were born outside the United States; military discharge papers for service before 1968; last year’s W-2s or self-employment tax returns; and a marriage certificate. SSA accepts photocopies of W-2s, self-employment tax returns, or medical records; most other documents must be originals and will be returned.

Should I wait to apply until I have every document?

No. SSA’s Form SSA-2 information page says, “Do not delay applying for benefits because you do not have all the documents. We will help you get them.” Apply with the information you have and tell SSA what is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much can a spouse benefit pay?

The unreduced spouse benefit can be up to one-half of the worker’s benefit at the worker’s full retirement age. Claiming before your own full retirement age permanently reduces the spouse benefit. The maximum is not a guaranteed amount, and SSA must evaluate your records and age to determine what you may receive.

Can I receive my own retirement benefit and a full spouse benefit?

SSA pays a benefit on your own record first. If the spouse benefit due is higher, SSA may add a spouse supplement so the combined payment reaches the applicable higher amount; it does not simply add two full benefits together. SSA’s example has a $1,000 own benefit and a $250 supplement for a $1,250 total.

Can I claim only a spouse benefit and delay my own retirement benefit?

For people born on or after January 2, 1954, SSA generally treats an application for retirement or spouse’s benefits as an application for both if the person qualifies for both. SSA describes exceptions, including some child-in-care and disability cases. Ask SSA how the rule applies to your birth date and circumstances.

Are current-spouse and divorced-spouse benefits governed by the same rules?

No. A divorced person may qualify on a former spouse’s record under separate rules, including a general requirement that the marriage lasted at least 10 years. SSA lists a final divorce decree for a divorced-spouse claim; do not apply that rule automatically to a current-spouse claim.

The Bottom Line

To apply, first check whether you meet the age or child-in-care condition and whether your spouse is receiving retirement or disability benefits. Apply online if you meet SSA’s age condition, call 1-800-772-1213, or contact a local office. Prepare the documents you have, but do not delay for missing paperwork. Before choosing when to claim, ask SSA how your own retirement benefit, any early-claim reduction, and deemed filing apply to your birth date and circumstances.
