When market yields rise, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall—but that does not automatically mean you should sell them or change your bond allocation. First identify when you need the money, how sensitive your holdings are to interest-rate changes, and whether your current allocation still fits your goals and tolerance for risk. There is no universal percentage shift that is right for every investor.
What rising rates do to bond prices—and what that means for your portfolio
A fixed-rate bond promises specified interest payments and repayment of principal at maturity, subject to the issuer meeting its obligations. If newly issued bonds offer higher yields, an older bond with a lower coupon is less attractive to a buyer. Its market price may therefore fall until its return is more competitive. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy summarizes the relationship this way: “A fundamental principle of bond investing is that market interest rates and bond prices generally move in opposite directions.” The statement appears in its Investor Bulletin dated June 26, 2013.

This price movement is interest-rate risk, not necessarily a sign that the issuer has become less able to pay. A U.S. Treasury security can lose market value when yields rise even though the U.S. government backs its scheduled payments and principal at maturity. That backing is not a guarantee of the price you would receive if you sold before maturity.
A price decline is only one part of the return picture. If you own an individual bond and hold it to maturity, you may receive the promised payments and principal, assuming the issuer does not default. But if you must sell before then, the market price at the time of sale matters and you may realize a loss. As coupons and maturing principal are reinvested after yields rise, they may earn more than they did before; that potential future income does not erase an immediate decline in market value.

An SEC example: why the price changes
The SEC’s 2013 bulletin gives a hypothetical illustration, not a current-market estimate. A 10-year Treasury with a 3% coupon is priced at $1,000 when market rates are 3%. One year later, if market rates are 4% and the bond has nine years remaining, the example price is $925.
| Illustrative point | Bond or market conditions | Example price |
|---|---|---|
| At purchase | 3% coupon; 10 years to maturity; market rates at 3% | $1,000 |
| One year later | 3% coupon; nine years to maturity; market rates at 4% | $925 |
The example isolates the price effect of a higher market rate. It does not predict what any particular bond or fund will be worth, and actual prices also depend on the security’s features and market conditions.
Start with the job your bonds are meant to do
Before changing holdings, separate money you expect to spend soon from the portion intended for longer-term goals. List known expenses, planned withdrawals, and other liabilities alongside their expected dates. The relevant question is not simply whether rates are rising; it is whether the current holdings can support your cash-flow needs without forcing a sale at an unfavorable time.
A shorter spending horizon generally leaves less room to ride out price fluctuations on money you will need soon. That does not mean every long-term investor should avoid duration, or that cash automatically becomes the best choice whenever rates rise. Cash and bonds play different roles, and a move that lowers price volatility can also affect income and future reinvestment. Choose the allocation in relation to your goals and ability to tolerate volatility, rather than reacting to a rate headline alone.

- Near-term spending: Identify the amount and date of expected withdrawals, then check whether the relevant assets mature or are available when the money is needed.
- Longer-term goals: Decide how much fluctuation you can accept in pursuit of the portfolio’s intended role, rather than judging the holdings only by their latest market value.
- Changing circumstances: Revisit the plan if a spending need, time horizon, or ability to bear losses has changed. Those changes may matter more than the rate move itself.
Investor.gov explains that asset allocation depends in part on time horizon and risk tolerance in its guide to asset allocation and diversification. Those are personal inputs; the same rate change can call for different responses from investors with different cash needs and risk capacity.
Measure rate sensitivity instead of guessing from maturity alone
Longer maturity and lower coupon generally mean a fixed-rate bond is more sensitive to a change in yields, all else equal. Maturity is useful to note, but it is only a rough indicator. Duration reflects the timing of a bond’s cash flows more fully and is commonly used to compare interest-rate sensitivity across bonds and funds. Maturity and duration are not interchangeable.
For an individual bond, review its maturity, coupon, call provisions, and whether you may need to sell before maturity. A callable bond may be repaid early under its terms, changing the timing of expected cash flows. For a bond fund, look at duration, underlying holdings, credit quality, and concentration. The fund’s market value can fluctuate as its holdings and market yields change; unlike an individual bond with a set maturity date, a fund continually holds and trades securities and does not mature as a whole on one date.

Duration is a sensitivity measure, not a promise of a precise future price. The actual result depends on the fund or bond’s holdings and on how the yield curve changes. Rates for different maturities do not have to move by the same amount, and other risks can affect prices at the same time. Use duration to understand relative exposure, not as a forecast or a complete description of risk.

What to inspect in a bond fund
- Duration: A longer duration generally indicates greater price sensitivity to a given yield move.
- Holdings and maturity profile: Check whether the fund’s securities and cash-flow timing fit your spending horizon.
- Credit quality and concentration: Determine whether the fund is broadly diversified or concentrated in a particular issuer, sector, or credit category.
- Call and prepayment exposure: Review whether issuers can repay securities early and how that could affect cash-flow timing.
- Expense ratio and trading costs: Check the specific fund and account information; the general rate framework does not establish product-level fees.
What to inspect in an individual bond
- Coupon and maturity: These help explain the promised payments and when principal is due, but do not tell the whole rate-sensitivity story.
- Call terms: Read whether and when the issuer can redeem the bond early.
- Ability to hold: Consider whether your plans allow you to wait for maturity or whether you may need to sell earlier.
- Issuer and liquidity: Assess the possibility of missed payments and whether the bond can be sold at a reasonable price when needed.
Investor.gov’s bond FAQs describe bond types and risks. They are useful context because interest-rate exposure is only one reason a bond’s value or outcome may differ from expectations.
A practical sequence for deciding whether to rebalance
- Write down the target allocation and purpose. Record the role bonds are meant to play, the spending dates they support, and the intended mix of assets. If there is no written target, establish one based on goals and risk tolerance before deciding how far to move.
- Inventory the current holdings. Separate individual bonds from funds. For bonds, record coupon, maturity, call features, credit quality, and liquidity. For funds, note duration, holdings, credit quality, concentration, and expenses.
- Compare current exposure with the plan. Ask whether the bond allocation has drifted from its target or whether cash-flow needs or tolerance for volatility have changed. A temporary decline by itself does not establish that the allocation is wrong.
- Choose a rebalancing rule before acting. Some investors rebalance on a schedule; others act when holdings cross predetermined tolerance bands. Investor.gov describes both periodic and threshold-based approaches and notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. A rule helps prevent a forecast or headline from becoming an improvised trading signal.
- Check the consequences of a trade. Before selling or switching, consider transaction costs, taxes, liquidity, and the effect on the rest of the portfolio. Tax treatment depends on the holding, account, and investor’s circumstances; the cited sources do not establish that a particular trade is tax-optimal.
- Make only the change needed to restore the plan. If a change is appropriate, compare alternatives by their sensitivity, cash-flow timing, credit and call risks, inflation exposure, diversification, and costs—not just by their current yield.
Rebalancing is a way to bring a portfolio back toward its intended risk mix, not a way to predict the next rate move. If the target remains appropriate and the allocation is still within the chosen limits, there may be no reason to trade solely because bond prices have fallen.
Should you switch to short-term bonds?
Shorter-duration holdings generally have less sensitivity to further rate increases than longer-duration holdings, all else equal. That can reduce the size of price movements from a given yield change, but it is not a risk-free fix. Shorter holdings expose reinvested cash flows to lower yields if rates fall, and they can offer less income than longer maturities. Their suitability depends on when you need the money, the role of bonds in your plan, and the other risks you are willing to accept.
A maturity ladder spreads principal repayment and reinvestment dates across bonds rather than concentrating everything at one maturity. This can reduce reliance on a single reinvestment date, but it does not eliminate market, inflation, credit, or reinvestment risk. A ladder also requires attention to the specific securities and cash needs; it is not automatically preferable to a fund or another bond structure.

Do not equate “shorter” with “safer” in every respect. A shorter bond can still carry default, liquidity, inflation, and call risk. A fund with a short duration can still fluctuate, and a narrow fund can remain concentrated even if its rate sensitivity is modest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why chasing higher yields can backfire
A higher quoted yield may compensate investors for risks beyond interest-rate sensitivity. Depending on the security, those can include greater credit or default risk, less liquidity, call risk, or longer duration. Comparing headline yields alone can therefore lead to a different and potentially less suitable risk profile than the one you intended.
Check issuer or fund credit quality, the terms governing repayment, the ability to sell, and how concentrated the holdings are. A broad bond fund can diversify exposure to individual issuers, but a narrow fund is not necessarily diversified. Diversification can help manage concentration risk; it does not guarantee against losses when the bond market declines.

Individual bonds and bond funds behave differently
An individual bond has stated payment terms and a maturity date. If you can hold it to maturity and the issuer pays as promised, interim changes in market price may be less important to the final principal payment. If you sell early, however, you receive the prevailing market price, which may be below what you paid. Credit events, calls, liquidity, and inflation can still affect the outcome.
A bond fund owns a changing collection of securities and trades holdings as part of its operation. Its share price or net asset value can rise or fall as the market values of those holdings change. A fund does not provide the same single maturity date at which an investor’s original purchase price is repaid. Therefore, the individual-bond question “Can I hold this until maturity?” does not transfer directly to a bond fund. Consider the fund’s duration, holdings, distribution pattern, costs, and your own withdrawal horizon.
Neither structure is universally better. Individual bonds may give an investor more direct control over maturity dates, while a fund can hold many securities and provide exposure to a portfolio. The relevant comparison is whether the structure’s cash flows, risks, liquidity, diversification, and costs fit the purpose of the money.

Selling a holding or replacing it can create transaction costs and tax consequences. These depend on the security, account type, purchase and sale details, and individual circumstances. Do not assume that selling at a loss, switching to a different bond type, or moving into a municipal bond is tax-optimal without considering those specifics.
The SEC notes that municipal bond interest is generally exempt from federal income tax, while state and local treatment depends on circumstances. Municipal bonds still carry risks, including credit and market risks, and tax treatment can vary. See the SEC’s municipal bond discussion for risk and diversification considerations. Compare after-tax results only using your own tax situation and the terms of the specific security.
Common mistakes when rates are rising
- Selling because a price fell: A decline is a reason to understand the holding and its role, not by itself proof that the portfolio needs a new allocation.
- Assuming rates will keep rising: A rate headline is not a reliable substitute for a plan. A decision based on a forecast can leave the portfolio poorly matched to later cash needs or market changes.
- Treating Treasury backing as price protection: Scheduled payments and principal at maturity do not guarantee the resale price before maturity.
- Using maturity as the only sensitivity measure: Coupon and cash-flow timing matter; duration provides a fuller comparison of interest-rate sensitivity.
- Moving everything to cash or short-term holdings: Reducing duration may lower sensitivity to further rate increases, but it changes income and reinvestment exposure too.
- Chasing the highest yield: Yield can reflect credit, liquidity, call, or duration risks. Check what risk is being taken in exchange.
- Ignoring costs and taxes: A theoretically attractive switch can have consequences that reduce its benefit for a particular investor.
A decision checklist before you act
- Do I know which spending needs the bonds are intended to support and when the money is needed?
- Have I distinguished individual bonds from funds and reviewed their actual interest-rate sensitivity?
- Is my bond allocation outside a target or tolerance band, or have my goals and risk tolerance changed?
- Have I considered credit, liquidity, inflation, and call risks alongside interest-rate risk?
- Do I understand the costs and possible tax consequences of a sale or replacement?
- Am I following a rebalancing rule, or reacting to a short-term rate prediction?
There is no evidence-based universal percentage to move out of bonds when rates rise, and the cited sources do not provide a current rate forecast or an average investor response. Specific decisions depend on your holdings, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, taxes, and account type. This framework is general information, not individualized financial advice.
