For a standard Amazon order, you generally can’t add a new item after checkout. Place a separate order for anything you left out. If your original order has not shipped, you may still be able to change certain existing details in Your Orders; eligible grocery deliveries have a separate add-items process.
Can you add an item after placing a standard Amazon order?
Usually, no. Amazon’s seller guidance says customers who want additional items need to place a separate order. It does not promise that Amazon will combine that order with the first one or ship both together. Amazon’s order-management guidance describes the separate-order route.
That is different from changing information already attached to an order. For an order that has not been dispatched, Amazon may offer controls to change eligible details, but that does not add a new product line. See Amazon’s order-information help for the available options.
How to check whether an existing order can be changed
- Open Your Orders and select Order Details for the order.
- Look for Change beside the detail you want to update.
- Use an available option if it appears. Amazon lists possible changes such as quantity, billing address, and payment method; which controls are available depends on the order and its status.
Amazon’s general instructions apply to orders that have not yet been dispatched. The presence of a Change option for one detail does not mean every detail can be edited on that order.

Mobile and desktop options
Amazon says mobile users can change payment methods but cannot change the address there. For potentially more options, it advises using Amazon.com on a desktop. The controls shown can still depend on the order.
What to do if you need an omitted item
Place a separate order for the item. Treat it as a separate purchase and do not assume it will be merged into the original shipment. If shipping together matters, check the order and delivery options shown at checkout rather than relying on the orders being combined.

Exceptions and special cases
Amazon Fresh and eligible grocery deliveries
Upcoming Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and eligible third-party grocery deliveries use a separate workflow. Open the upcoming order and check whether Amazon still indicates that items can be added. Additions are possible only before the order has been prepared; once preparation begins, the grocery add-items window has passed. Follow the instructions in Amazon’s grocery-order help.
Orders from a third-party seller
If the change you need is the shipping address on an order from a third-party seller, Amazon directs customers to its Contact a Third-Party Seller route. This is an address-change route, not a way to append another item to the order.
