To add Bitcoin payments with the Breez SDK, choose a supported binding for the current Spark SDK, obtain an API key, install and initialize the SDK, and build the app around its payment-preparation and event flows. For outgoing payments, prepare the payment first, show the returned fee information, then send only after the user confirms. For incoming payments, choose a documented receive method that fits your app; the SDK’s receive guide includes generating an on-chain Bitcoin deposit address.

This guide follows Breez’s current Spark documentation, not older Breez SDK variants such as Greenlight or historical Liquid/Nodeless documentation. SDK bindings and APIs can change, so use examples from the documentation for the exact version you integrate.

What the Breez SDK does—and what this guide covers

Breez describes its SDK as software for integrating Bitcoin and stablecoin transfers into an app or service. The current Spark repository describes a nodeless integration with supported send and receive methods and bindings for several development environments. Breez says the SDK is free and open source; that describes the software, not the total cost of operating a payment feature. Payment routes can include fees, and the current setup requires an API key.

The product page lists Swift, Kotlin, JavaScript, React Native, Flutter, Go, Python, C#, and WASM. The current Spark getting-started guide also lists Rust and Kotlin Multiplatform. These lists are not a guarantee that every binding is supported in every SDK release. Check the current guide and the version-specific documentation before selecting a package or copying an example.

The implementation path below focuses on choosing a binding, obtaining access, installing and initializing the SDK, tracking state in the app, and implementing receive and send flows. The official getting-started guide covers installation, testing and development, initialization, customization, SDK information, event listening, and logging. It is the place to confirm current code and API names; this article does not prescribe unverified method names or event schemas.

Plan the integration before writing payment screens

Choose the current SDK and a binding that fits your app

Start with Breez’s current Spark getting-started documentation and repository, then confirm that the selected binding supports your app’s language, framework, and target platforms in the SDK version you intend to use. A product-page list is useful for orientation, but the current guide is the better check for the actual onboarding path. Do not mix setup instructions from Spark with older Greenlight or Liquid/Nodeless examples: similarly named SDK generations are not interchangeable implementation recipes.

Also decide which payment methods your first release needs. A wallet-like app that must accept on-chain deposits has a different receive requirement from a service that only needs to collect Lightning invoices. The current send guide documents Lightning invoices (BOLT11), Bitcoin addresses, Spark addresses, and Spark invoices. The receive guide covers multiple methods, including creating a Bitcoin deposit address for on-chain payments. Confirm the exact receive methods and behavior in the version-specific guide before designing around them.

Obtain an API key

The current Spark getting-started page says an API key is required and describes requesting one from Breez. Treat that as a prerequisite, not an optional production enhancement. Follow the current access instructions on Breez’s official page; access requirements and request procedures may change. The available documentation summary does not establish a particular key format, account workflow, rate limit, or key-rotation policy, so do not assume one.

As an application-design decision, determine where the key belongs and how it will be configured for development and release builds by following Breez’s current security guidance. Do not put credentials in a public repository or assume that a browser demo’s configuration is an appropriate production pattern. The official getting-started guide explicitly says: “The web demo is for demonstration purposes only and not intended for production use.”

Install, initialize, and observe the SDK

Follow the documented onboarding sequence

  1. Install the binding. Use the installation instructions for the current Spark SDK and your chosen language or framework. Confirm that the package and example match the SDK branch you selected.
  2. Set up a development environment. Work through the guide’s testing and development instructions before connecting the flow to a production user experience. The documentation outline includes this stage; the exact setup details depend on the binding and version.
  3. Initialize the SDK. Follow the current initialization example for your binding and provide the configuration it requires, including the API access information where specified. Do not copy initialization code from a different SDK generation.
  4. Apply app-specific customization. Review the documented customization options and SDK information before deciding which settings or data your app needs. Avoid adding assumptions about custody, persistence, or network behavior that the current binding documentation does not confirm.
  5. Subscribe to SDK events and add logging. The getting-started guide includes both event listening and logging. Use the current API reference for exact event names and payloads, then map those events and returned errors into your own app state.

Keep payment state explicit in your app

Build the interface so users can distinguish an unfinished payment from one the app has observed as complete. Represent the stages your implementation actually knows about—for example, gathering a request, preparing it, presenting fees, awaiting confirmation, submitting, and displaying the outcome—without treating a button tap as proof of settlement. Use the SDK’s documented events and errors as the basis for updates, rather than inventing event names or inferring success from a local UI action.

Logging is useful for diagnosing integration issues, but logs should be designed deliberately. Follow the SDK’s current logging guidance and avoid exposing sensitive user or payment information in app logs. The documentation outline establishes that logging is part of onboarding; it does not, by itself, specify which data is safe to record or how long records should be retained.

How outgoing Bitcoin payments work

Breez documents sending as a two-step flow: first prepare the payment, then send it. Preparation validates request details and returns fee information for the user to review. Treat it as a real part of the payment experience, not as an invisible preliminary call. Present the amount and relevant fee information returned for the selected method, ask the user to confirm, and then perform the send step according to the current API documentation.

Match the payment request to its method

Destination or request What the current guide establishes Implementation consideration
Lightning invoice (BOLT11) The send guide supports BOLT11 invoices. If the invoice has no amount, an amount can optionally be supplied. If the invoice specifies an amount, a different amount is not supported. Parse and prepare the request using the current SDK flow. Do not let the user override an amount fixed by the invoice.
Bitcoin address The amount must be specified. Preparation includes slow, medium, and fast fee quotes. Show the amount and the returned fee choices before confirmation. If a quote is marked as an estimate, label it as an estimate rather than a confirmed fee.
Spark address Listed as a supported send destination in the current send guide. Use the applicable preparation and send behavior for this method in the exact SDK version. Do not assume Bitcoin-address fee options apply to it.
Spark invoice Listed as a supported send request in the current send guide. Use the method-specific validation and fee response documented for the binding and version.

The table summarizes the supported request types and behavior established by Breez’s current send guide; it is not a promise that all methods have identical inputs, fees, or route availability. Check the current payment-method documentation before implementing validation or presenting method-specific details.

Make fee confirmation understandable

For an on-chain Bitcoin-address payment, preparation returns slow, medium, and fast fee quotes. Give the user enough context to choose among the returned options, and preserve the selected option through confirmation and send. The documentation does not establish fixed fee amounts: quotes depend on the payment and the current conditions used to generate them. Do not substitute a static fee label or a quote from a previous payment.

A BOLT11 preparation may include a Spark transfer fee when a Spark route is available. Breez’s guide says only one fee is paid, according to the selected payment route. In practice, present the fee information returned for the prepared payment and avoid adding the fees for multiple possible routes together as if they were all charged. Route availability and the fee response should be interpreted using the current SDK documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stable balance can change the fee experience

The stable-balance guide describes conversion options that can be configured when there is not enough Bitcoin to pay. This means a payment flow may involve more than selecting a payment route: the preparation result can reflect conversion behavior as well as the on-chain fee situation. Explain the actual quote and estimate status the SDK returns, rather than showing a generic fee or implying that a displayed estimate is final.

For a Bitcoin-address payment when the Bitcoin balance is zero, Breez says the initial displayed fee can be an estimate based on current on-chain rates. A real quote is fetched after conversion. The estimate is an upper bound: if the final quote exceeds it, the operation fails rather than spending more than the estimate. That behavior matters to the UI. Clearly identify an estimate as provisional and ensure the failure path is intelligible; do not tell the user that payment succeeded merely because a conversion or preparation stage began.

For other combinations of balance, conversion setting, and payment method, consult the current stable-balance and send documentation. The behavior described here is specifically tied to the documented zero-Bitcoin-balance case for a Bitcoin-address payment; it should not be generalized to every route.

Implementing receive flows

Receiving is a separate product decision from sending. Breez’s receive guide documents multiple receive methods, including generating a Bitcoin deposit address for on-chain payments. Select only the methods that fit your app and make the request type clear to the person paying. For an on-chain deposit flow, use the documented address-generation operation and present the resulting address in a way the user can copy or share, alongside status feedback consistent with the SDK’s documented events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The materials summarized here do not establish the exact receive API, address lifecycle, payment-status event names, or whether a particular receiving method is available in every binding. Avoid promising an address duration, confirmation threshold, or notification timing until the current method-specific documentation confirms it. For every enabled method, explain what the payer must provide and what the recipient’s app will show while the payment is pending or after the SDK reports an outcome.

Test the full user journey, not just initialization

The getting-started guide includes testing and development, events, and logging. Use those parts of the official guide to validate the integration in the environment and SDK version you actually intend to ship. No independent performance, reliability, or payment test results are established here, so the checks below are implementation recommendations—not claims that a particular test suite or outcome is guaranteed.

  • Request validation: exercise each enabled request type and verify that invalid or incomplete payment details produce a visible, recoverable error.
  • Amount handling: check both amountless and amount-specified BOLT11 invoices. Confirm that your UI permits an optional amount only for an amountless invoice and does not offer a conflicting amount for an invoice that specifies one.
  • Fee review: for Bitcoin-address payments, ensure that the fee options returned during preparation are visible before the user confirms. Test how your interface distinguishes an estimate from a real quote.
  • Route and fee presentation: ensure that the app presents the fee response for the prepared route and does not imply that a Spark fee and another route’s fee are both charged when the guide says only one fee is paid according to route selection.
  • Insufficient Bitcoin balance: where stable-balance conversion is configured, validate the documented zero-balance Bitcoin-address case, including the provisional estimate and the failure condition if the final quote exceeds that estimate.
  • Receive status: test each receive method you enable and ensure that the app’s status display follows documented SDK events rather than a locally assumed completion state.
  • Operational diagnostics: verify that logging helps diagnose errors without exposing payment or user details your app should protect.

What to verify before release

SDK APIs, supported bindings, providers, API-key access, and partner terms may change. Before release, re-check the current Spark getting-started page, the specific send and receive guides, and the documentation for your selected binding and version. In particular, verify the current package installation, required initialization settings, exact event and error contracts, payment-method inputs, and fee response fields. Use official code examples as versioned implementation references rather than treating a general article as a substitute for the binding’s API reference.

Breez’s product page reports that more than 100 teams have integrated the SDK; Breez does not state a year for that figure on the page. Treat it as a vendor-reported adoption statement, not an independent measure of reliability, performance, or suitability for your app. The reviewed materials do not establish comparative benchmarks for speed, uptime, fees versus alternatives, or SDK reliability, nor do they establish a specific key-custody model, persistence behavior, or external purchase/on-ramp flow. Those are items to confirm directly in current documentation and through your own technical and product review before making commitments to users.
