List an internship as experience when it gives useful evidence for the job you want. Include the role, organization, location and dates, then use concise, action-led bullets to show relevant work and results you can support. The right section may be Experience, a focused heading such as Research Experience, or Internship Experience; there is no single required format.
What to include in an internship entry
Use a clear entry that fits the style of the rest of your resume:
Internship Title | Organization, City, State (or Country) | Month Year–Month Year
- Use the internship title that accurately describes the role.
- Name the organization and location.
- Show the dates you actually held the position. If it is ongoing, label it as current using the same convention as your other entries.
- Write bullets about relevant tasks, projects, tools, methods and contributions.
Indeed’s August 14, 2026 guide suggests two to four bullets, while a separate Indeed guide updated June 15, 2026 gives examples using five bullets for a first-listed role and three for one lower on the resume. Those are examples, not universal rules: include enough detail to show relevant evidence without crowding the page. Indeed, updated August 14, 2026; Indeed, updated June 15, 2026.

Where to put an internship
Choose the heading that makes the experience easiest to understand and find. The role’s substance matters more than a supposedly mandatory section label.
Experience or Work Experience
Use this for a workplace internship that demonstrates applied skills relevant to the position. It can be especially useful for students and early-career applicants whose internships are among their strongest examples of work. Indeed, updated June 15, 2026.
A focused experience heading
Headings such as Research Experience or Marketing Experience can help employers find relevant work when your resume includes different kinds of experience. Select general or tailored sections according to the opportunity. University of Pennsylvania Career Services.

Internship Experience
If you have several internships, grouping them under Internship Experience can make the resume easier to scan. Keep entries in reverse chronological order within the section and format them consistently. Indeed, updated June 15, 2026.

Education
Use Education for a program or academic experience that is fundamentally part of your studies, rather than placing a workplace internship there by default. UT Austin Career Services recommends listing an internship abroad as its own Experience entry, distinguishing it from study-abroad coursework or programs that may belong under Education. University of Texas at Austin Career Services.
How to write internship bullets
Match the internship’s actual work to the target job description. Start with an accurate action verb, explain the task or project, and add useful context such as the audience, method, tool or scope. State a result when you know it. Penn Career Services recommends emphasizing accomplishments and showing qualities such as communication or teamwork through examples rather than listing them without evidence. University of Pennsylvania Career Services.
- Identify relevant work. Choose tasks, projects or outcomes that connect to the role you are applying for.
- Describe your contribution. Make clear what you did, including your part in collaborative work.
- Add verifiable detail. Include a tool, method, audience or number only when it is accurate and meaningful.
- Use a specific result where possible. If you cannot substantiate a measurable outcome, describe the completed work and its context rather than inventing a metric.

Tailor the entry without overstating it
Keep the title, dates and claims faithful to what happened. For a team project, describe your contribution without claiming sole ownership of the team’s result. Use numbers only when you can verify both the source and what the figure represents. If the internship is planned but has not started, do not present it as completed work or write accomplishment bullets for work you have not done.
