American Express currently lists a new lounge in Terminal A as “Coming Soon,” with an expected opening in 2027. It has not published an exact opening date or the Newark lounge’s final access rules. Until it opens, check the official location page before traveling and use another EWR lounge only if you meet that facility’s own entry requirements.
Is the Amex Centurion Lounge at Newark open?
No. As of October 9, 2026, the official American Express location page lists the Newark Centurion Lounge as “Coming Soon” and says it is expected to open in Terminal A in 2027. The page does not give a specific opening date. Check the official EWR location page for updates; do not plan a visit based on an assumed opening date.

This means there is currently no operating Newark Centurion Lounge to enter, even if you hold a card that provides access to Centurion Lounges elsewhere. A general card benefit cannot make a not-yet-open facility available. If your flight is before the Newark location opens, plan around another lounge or airport facility only after checking its separate admission rules.
The planned location is described as a two-floor lounge with food, beverage, and wellness concepts. Those are planned features, not services travelers can use today. The official page has not published operating hours, a gate or entrance, or instructions for reaching the lounge once inside Terminal A. It also has not given a detailed construction or opening schedule. The only current timing statement to rely on is the expected year, 2027.

American Express’s official statement is: “A new Centurion Lounge is expected to open at Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A in 2027.” That statement does not establish a particular opening day, nor does it confirm that the lounge will be open for every traveler’s trip in 2027. Check again close to departure and do not infer an opening date from older announcements or unofficial discussion.
What access rules should cardholders expect?
American Express publishes general US Centurion Lounge terms for eligible U.S. Platinum Card Members, but Newark’s page does not yet confirm the local policy. The network terms below explain the current general framework; they should not be treated as a guarantee of admission at the future EWR lounge. Recheck the Newark page and the current Amex Centurion Lounge access terms before relying on them for a 2027 trip.
That distinction matters: the general US rules can help you understand the likely things to check—card eligibility, boarding-pass details, arrival time, and guest charges—but they are not published EWR-specific instructions. American Express may clarify or update local details before the Newark lounge opens. Until it does, treat all current network guidance as provisional for a future Newark visit.

Under current general US terms, an eligible cardholder must present a valid eligible card and a same-day boarding pass for a confirmed departing flight with a seat or zone assignment. The name on the boarding pass must match the name on the card. Amex may also request government-issued identification. Entry depends on space being available.
In practice, that means a card by itself is not enough under the general framework. You should be prepared to show both the eligible card and the qualifying travel credential, and the names should match. If there is a mismatch, the general terms do not promise that staff will make an exception. Keep identification available because Amex may request it. Even when the documents and itinerary meet the published criteria, admission is still subject to space availability.
The requirement is for a confirmed departing flight on the same day, with a seat or zone assignment. Do not assume that an itinerary, an arriving flight, or a future booking without the required boarding-pass information will satisfy the terms. Because EWR’s final rules are not published, verify the exact documentation requirements again when the lounge is close to opening.
When you may enter
General network guidance ordinarily allows entry within three hours of the departing flight. A traveler making a same-day connection may enter within five hours of the connecting flight. A same-day round trip is not considered a connection under Amex’s FAQ, and arriving passengers generally cannot enter just because they have landed. These time windows are current general guidance, not confirmed Newark-specific terms.

For a straightforward departure, use the three-hour window as a planning reference, not as a promise that EWR will use the same rule. For a connection, the general guidance refers to the connecting flight and a five-hour window. A round trip that begins and ends on the same day does not become a connection under the FAQ simply because it contains two flight segments. An arriving passenger also should not count on entering only because they have just arrived at the airport; the general exception concerns a same-day connection.
These distinctions can affect whether a lounge stop fits an itinerary. Before setting aside time to visit, check which flight the timing rule applies to and whether your itinerary counts as a connection. Then recheck any EWR-specific details announced by Amex. A valid card and a qualifying flight do not override the published entry window or capacity limits.
Guests and the spending threshold
Current general US Platinum terms list a charge of $50 per guest, or $30 for a child aged 2 through 17, unless the account qualifies for Complimentary Guest Access. Amex’s listed qualification is at least $75,000 in eligible purchases on the Platinum account during a calendar year, which can qualify the account for up to two complimentary guests. This threshold and guest policy are general terms; Newark’s final policy may be specified or updated separately before opening.
The $75,000 figure refers to eligible purchases in a calendar year on the Platinum account; it is not a Newark-specific entry fee or an amount every traveler must spend to enter alone. Under the current general terms, meeting the qualification can make up to two guests complimentary. If the account does not qualify, the listed general charges are $50 per guest and $30 for a child aged 2 through 17. Do not treat those figures as confirmed future Newark prices.

If you will travel with companions, check the account’s current guest status and the EWR page before the trip. Do not assume that a second card, a child’s age, or the number of people in your party changes the eventual local policy unless Amex publishes that detail. The EWR page has not yet set out its own guest allowance, charges, or any local exceptions.
How to check access before a future visit
Use a short verification process rather than relying on a single old description of the lounge or on general Centurion Lounge terms. Opening status, access terms, hours, and capacity are the details most likely to determine whether a planned visit will work. The steps below separate what you can verify now from what remains unpublished.
- Check whether the lounge has opened. Visit the official Newark location page close to your travel date. “Coming Soon” does not establish that the lounge will be operating on a particular day in 2027. If the page still says “Coming Soon,” there is no operating EWR Centurion Lounge to visit.
- Look for the final local information. Once the location page is updated, check for a confirmed opening date, hours, terminal details, entrance or gate information, and instructions for reaching the lounge. Those details are not currently published. Do not guess at a gate or assume that a Terminal A location is convenient for every itinerary.
- Read the EWR-specific access details. Look for eligible cards, required travel documents, entry timing, guest charges, and any local restrictions. The current page does not provide these operational details. If the EWR listing does not answer a question, consult Amex’s current general terms as background and confirm with American Express rather than treating the network rules as a local guarantee.
- Confirm your own eligibility. Check that your card account remains eligible and review the current Amex access terms. If you plan to bring guests, verify the current fee or complimentary-access qualification rather than assuming it will match today’s general terms. Current general US Platinum terms include a $75,000 eligible-purchase threshold for up to two complimentary guests, but the Newark policy is pending.
- Match your itinerary to the entry window. Have a same-day boarding pass for a confirmed departing flight and ensure the name matches your card. Check the applicable entry timing, especially if you are connecting or have a round-trip itinerary. The general network guidance currently distinguishes a normal departure from a same-day connection; EWR’s final terms may provide local detail.
- Verify on the day of travel. Lounge policies, hours, and capacity can change. Confirm with Amex and, once available, the lounge’s current instructions before making a detour or relying on entry. Even an eligible traveler may be turned away if space is unavailable under the general framework.
Keep the distinction between “expected to open in 2027” and “open on my travel date” in mind. The former is the current official forecast; the latter requires a current confirmation. Once the lounge is operating, details such as its hours and entrance will also matter to whether it fits your airport plan. None of those specifics should be assumed from the present announcement.

What can you use at EWR while you wait?
The Amex lounge directory’s selected Platinum view currently lists a Delta Sky Club in Terminal A and Minute Suites in Terminal C. These are separate facilities with their own access rules, availability, and hours. A Platinum Card alone should not be assumed to provide universal admission to either one. Check the individual listing and the lounge operator’s rules before heading there.
The names in a card directory are not a guarantee of entry. A Delta Sky Club, for example, has its own eligibility criteria; a Minute Suites location is a rest-suite product rather than a traditional lounge. The available information does not establish that every Platinum Card Member qualifies for either facility, what a visit costs, or what services are available on a particular day. Verify those details directly before deciding that one is a workable substitute.
The directory also includes a Lufthansa Lounge listing, but its current notice says Global Lounge Collection access ended October 1, 2026. Do not rely on that past card-program access; confirm any available entry directly with the operator and your airline. The date matters because an older listing or saved travel note may still mention access that the current notice says has ended.
For other options, consult the airport’s directory of EWR services as well as the relevant lounge or facility operator. Before choosing an alternative, check:
- Terminal and location: Is it in the terminal you need, and is it practical to reach from your departure gate? The Amex directory places the listed Delta Sky Club in Terminal A and Minute Suites in Terminal C, while the planned Centurion Lounge is also in Terminal A. Confirm the location and route for the specific facility rather than assuming all airport facilities are nearby or convenient.
- Admission basis: Does entry require a particular airline, ticket or cabin, loyalty status, eligible card, or paid reservation? A listing in an Amex directory does not mean every cardholder has access. The facility’s own current rules determine who may enter.
- Hours and capacity: Is it open when you will be there, and are there current limits on admission? Hours and space availability can affect a visit even when you otherwise meet eligibility requirements. Check close to travel rather than relying on an old directory entry.
- Type of facility: A reservable rest suite is not the same as a traditional lounge, so confirm what access includes. Compare the facility with what you actually need—such as a lounge visit or a place to rest—before choosing it as an alternative.
Amex’s directory and the airport directory are useful starting points, but the facility’s current rules control admission. Compare alternatives by terminal and distance from your gate, entry eligibility, hours and capacity, and whether the facility is a conventional lounge or a reservable rest suite. That is more useful than assuming an option is interchangeable with the planned Centurion Lounge just because it appears in a directory.
