Yes—cybersecurity researchers described a real fraud campaign in which criminals allegedly used stolen payment-card data to buy Apple products, advertised those products on Korean second-hand marketplaces, and named the eventual buyer as the Apple Store pickup contact. The buyer could receive a genuine, sealed device from a real Apple Store while the criminal kept the buyer’s payment. The available reporting describes abuse of an ordering and fulfillment workflow, not evidence that Apple’s systems or Apple Accounts were breached.
The campaign, called “Poisoned Apple” by South Korean Financial Security Institute researchers Gyuyeon Kim and Hyunho Cho, was presented at Black Hat Asia in April 2024. Reported activity involved South Korea and Japan during 2021–2023. Whether it continued afterward, and whether Apple changed its controls, is not established by the reporting available for this article.
The scam in one minute
The reported money flow was:
Stolen payment data → unauthorized Apple purchase → discounted marketplace listing → genuine buyer pays → buyer collects the order → criminal keeps the proceeds.
The Apple pickup option was reportedly the cash-out stage. The initial theft of card and personal information occurred through payment pages on other online retailers, not necessarily through Apple.

This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block all RFID and NFC signal to secure your details and have peace of mind.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: A large working distance of 2.4” provides complete protection for your whole wallet. Cards 1.2” either side of the card will be fully secure from e-pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
The Register’s account of the Black Hat Asia presentation and contemporaneous reports from The Times of India describe the campaign and its alleged mechanics.
How the operation allegedly worked
- Payment pages were compromised or modified. Researchers said pages on more than 50 legitimate online retailers continued sending orders to the real retailer while also copying card and personal information to criminal-controlled servers.
- Stolen cards bought Apple products. Criminals used the captured details to place online Apple orders.
- Products were advertised at plausible discounts. Listings on Korean second-hand marketplaces reportedly offered new Apple devices for roughly $100–$200 below an example market price—such as a $1,000 product for about $800 or an $800 iPhone for about $700.
- A genuine buyer paid the seller. The buyer was told to collect the item, often because the listing appeared to offer a convenient local deal.
- The buyer was designated as the pickup person. The criminal placed the Apple order using the stolen card and entered the buyer’s details as the authorized third-party collector.
- The buyer collected a real product. Reported pickup materials included an order number or QR code and government photo identification, although Apple’s requirements can vary by country, store, product and date.
- The criminal retained the buyer’s money. The actual cardholder or issuing bank later faced the unauthorized Apple charge, while the buyer possessed merchandise purchased with stolen credentials.
The “Poisoned Apple” label and the discount examples were reported by Tech Times. A genuine device and an official-store handoff therefore did not prove that the underlying transaction was legitimate.

Who could lose money or face consequences?
| Party | Potential harm |
|---|---|
| Original cardholder | An unauthorized Apple charge, card replacement, account investigation and possible identity-theft exposure. |
| Second-hand buyer | Loss of the payment made to the criminal, a disputed or seized device, and questions about whether the buyer knowingly handled fraudulently obtained goods. |
| Card issuer and merchant | Chargeback, fraud-review and investigation costs. |
| Marketplace | Abuse of listings or hijacked accounts, buyer-protection disputes and loss of user trust. |
| Apple or the retailer | Operational, refund, investigation and reputational costs. The available reports do not establish that Apple automatically reclaimed every device. |
What researchers said they found
According to The Register, the researchers linked the campaign to approximately 8,000 stolen credit cards and more than five million pieces of personal information. They also described criminal collection infrastructure, efforts to conceal it through Cloudflare and a configuration mistake that allegedly exposed an IP address. The figures and technical observations are researcher-reported; the available coverage does not include the underlying dataset, forensic report or an independent audit.
The researchers said the activity affected residents of South Korea and Japan between 2021 and 2023 and that the initial discovery occurred in September 2022. They reportedly suspected some operators were based in China because of infrastructure, domain-registration and simplified-Chinese-language clues. Those clues support a hypothesis, not a definitive identification of a criminal group or government.

That is not a universal description of every South Korean payment and does not establish exactly how any particular transaction bypassed authentication.
Was Apple hacked?
No Apple network breach is established by the available reporting. The described fraud chain used stolen information gathered from other payment pages and then abused a legitimate online ordering and third-party pickup feature. A stolen card can be used at many merchants without a breach of the card network or the merchant’s systems.

A modest discount is more persuasive than an absurdly low price. The buyer may have seen a recognized marketplace, a normal-looking seller account, a sealed product and a collection appointment at a real Apple Store. The product itself could be genuine because the criminal’s objective was to monetize stolen-card purchases, not manufacture counterfeit phones.

Several warning signs together should outweigh the appeal of the deal:
- A new iPhone, Mac or iPad is below normal local-market pricing without a verifiable reason.
- The seller insists that you collect an order placed by someone else.
- Payment must be made before the seller’s identity or transaction history can be checked.
- The seller pushes cash, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or an off-platform payment.
- The account cannot provide a credible receipt, ownership history or return arrangement.
- The seller creates urgency—such as claiming the price exists only for immediate payment.
- The seller refuses marketplace escrow or buyer protection.
No single signal proves fraud. Legitimate gifts, corporate purchases, authorized couriers and genuine clearance sales can involve another person collecting an order. Risk rises when the discount, urgency, unverifiable seller and third-party pickup all appear together.
Before collecting an Apple order for another person
- Verify the seller independently, not only through the marketplace profile.
- Keep messages and payment inside the marketplace’s official systems.
- Ask who placed the Apple order, why you are collecting it and how the seller obtained the product.
- Request a legitimate receipt and order details that are consistent with the seller’s identity.
- Decline if the seller insists on irreversible payment, refuses identity checks or pressures you to hurry.
- Save screenshots of the listing, messages, payment records and pickup instructions.
- Provide only the identification Apple or the retailer actually requires. Do not submit extra identity documents to the seller.
- Do not impersonate the purchaser or attempt to bypass Apple’s pickup controls.
What to do if you are involved
If your card was used without authorization
- Call the issuer using the number on the card or its official website and report the charge immediately.
- Ask whether the card should be frozen or replaced and how to dispute the transaction.
- Review recent statements for small test charges and other unfamiliar merchants.
- Change passwords reused on the affected retailer or elsewhere, and enable multifactor authentication.
- Preserve receipts, emails, marketplace messages, profiles and transaction records.
- Report the listing and account to the marketplace and make a report to the relevant national fraud or identity-theft authority.
If you entered card details on a suspicious payment page
- Lock or replace the card immediately and tell the issuer that the details may have been captured.
- Change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication and monitor every account for test charges.
- Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert where your jurisdiction offers one.
- Check your browser and devices for unfamiliar extensions or software, and do not revisit the suspicious site.
If you bought the device from a marketplace seller
- Contact the marketplace and payment provider promptly; notify your bank if you paid by card.
- Keep the device, packaging, receipt, serial number and all seller communications intact.
- Do not resell, reset, modify or conceal the product while ownership is disputed.
- Cooperate with Apple, the marketplace, payment providers and law enforcement if contacted.
- Obtain legal advice if the device is seized or you are accused of knowingly handling stolen goods.
Reimbursement is not automatic. The outcome can depend on your payment method, jurisdiction, evidence of what you knew and the applicable marketplace and banking terms.
What remains unknown in 2026
The core reports date from April 2024. They do not verify the campaign’s present status, Apple’s current pickup controls, a company response, the total number of affected transactions or later enforcement action. Do not describe “Poisoned Apple” as an active Apple vulnerability without newer evidence, and do not label every discounted Apple listing as part of this campaign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest practical rule is simple: buy directly from Apple, an identifiable authorized retailer or a marketplace with strong payment and return protections. Treat any deal that requires you to collect an order placed by someone else as a high-risk transaction, even when the product and store are genuine.
