The British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy is a funded route into pilot training for a limited number of cadets. Applications for the 2026 intake closed on 23 April 2026, and BA has not announced when applications for a future intake will open. Selection is competitive, training is full-time, and completing the academy does not guarantee a job: candidates must pass the course before they may join BA as pilots.
What the Speedbird Pilot Academy offers
BA funds initial flight training for successful candidates and assigns them to an approved flight school. The academy is intended for people without prior flying experience, and BA describes its integrated training as full-time and typically 18–24 months. That is the overall course range, not a guaranteed timetable for every cadet.
BA says it intends to run a cadet scheme each year, but says this is not guaranteed. Its official pages do not give a date for the next application campaign. For updates, BA advises candidates to sign up for job alerts on its Future Pilots page.
Who could apply for the 2026 campaign?
The criteria below are specific to BA’s 2026 campaign; BA reviews selection criteria annually. Meeting them does not guarantee an invitation or offer.

#1 Best Overall
- COMFORTABLE AND DURABLE DESIGN – The RA200s lightweight design weighing only 16 oz paired with soft foam ear seals provides unparalleled comfort over extended flights.
- UNMATCHED AUDIO CLARITY - Premier noise reduction rating (NRR) of 24db and electret noise-canceling microphone provides crystal clear audio ensuring minimal background noise.
- AUDIO ADJUSTABILITY - Individual volume control on each ear with ultra-lite neodymium speakers and a 3.5mm input jack for phone connection (AUDIO ONLY).
- HIGH QUALITY MICROPHONE - Equipped with an advanced noise canceling electret microphone, you can ensure your communication remains clear and uninterrupted.
- PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT - A custom padded headset bag is included to protect your headset outside of flying times. This bag is FREE when purchasing the headset.
- Age: 17–58 when applying, and at least 18 by 1 January 2027. BA said it gave no preference to younger applicants who met the criteria.
- Education: Six GCSEs at grades A–C or 4–9, including Maths, English Language and a Science, or equivalent qualifications. BA said higher qualifications do not replace the stated GCSE requirements.
- English: Fluent English. IELTS 5.5 was not required to apply, but successful candidates needed it before training.
- Right to work and travel: The right to live and work in the UK without sponsorship, plus a valid passport permitting unrestricted worldwide travel. Applicants living overseas also needed to be able to remain in the UK for more than six months. A foreign passport was not automatically disqualifying if these requirements were met.
- Medical: Ability to obtain and hold a UK CAA Class 1 medical without restrictions and meet BA’s medical criteria. BA said it would pay for an initial Class 1 medical for successful candidates who did not already have one.
- Height and functionality: The published range was 1.57m (5 ft 2 in) to 1.90m (6 ft 3 in). Applicants below 5 ft 2 in could still apply but had to complete a functionality test; BA also said it might require a functionality check outside the published range.
- Checks: Referencing and pre-employment checks had to be completed before training.
Applicants with overseas qualifications were directed to ECCTIS, and BA said it would check uploaded certificates. The campaign FAQ gives these clarifications in its Speedbird Pilot Academy FAQs, which BA said were correct as of 14 April 2026.
How selection works
BA’s process combines online assessments, a verbal speaking activity, psychometric tests, group work, multitasking assessment and interviews. Candidates progress through three stages; not everyone advances.

BA’s FAQ says candidates can reach the flight-school stage a maximum of three times. For the 2026 campaign, duplicate applications were to be identified and removed.
What training includes and how long it takes
BA’s academy preparation page breaks the training into phases. These are indicative phase descriptions; do not add them together as though they promise a fixed schedule. BA’s broader estimate for the integrated course is 18–24 months.

| Phase | BA’s description |
|---|---|
| Ground school | 6–8 months, including 13 pilot exams |
| Basic flight training | About 6 months, progressing from no flying experience to solo competence |
| Advanced flight training | 4–6 months, including twin-engine and instrument flying |
| Upset-recovery training | Three flights |
| APS MCC | 3–4 weeks of multi-crew training, often in an A320 or 737 simulator |
These phase estimates come from BA’s academy preparation page; the 18–24-month overall range is on its Future Pilots page. BA’s general pilot FAQ separately estimates about 18 months for cadet commercial licence training followed by up to three months of type rating and line training. That general estimate is not the academy’s stated 18–24-month integrated-course range.
What BA says it pays for and provides
BA says it funds initial flight-training costs for successful candidates. Cadets may rank FTEJerez and Skyborne by preference, and BA assigns successful candidates to an approved school. The listed support includes accommodation, food at FTEJerez or a food allowance at Skyborne, a subsistence allowance, and financial support for the Class 1 medical and relevant Class 2 medical. BA also lists employee benefits including pension, life insurance and family leave.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prior flying experience, exclusions and deferrals
Previous flying experience is not required. BA recommends considering a 30-minute trial flight in a glider or fixed-wing aircraft to see whether you enjoy flying; it is advice, not an eligibility condition. Any flying experience may demonstrate motivation, but is not required.

How the academy differs from BA’s other pilot routes
The Speedbird Pilot Academy is BA’s funded cadet pathway. It is not the same as the airline’s self-sponsored options for people training independently or who already hold qualifications. BA describes a post-instrument-rating route for already qualified pilots and a self-funded route for trainees at specified approved training organisations. For the with-ATO self-sponsored route, BA lists Skyborne, Aeros, Leading Edge Aviation and FTEJerez, with separate performance requirements. The eligibility and funding terms for those routes should not be confused with the academy’s.
What to do while applications are closed
There is no confirmed opening date for the next campaign. BA recommends job alerts for future vacancies. In the meantime, candidates can review the official preparation hub and check that their education documents, UK work rights, passport and medical eligibility are in order. A trial flight is optional, not a prerequisite.
