Your earning rate depends on your email preference and VIP status, and third-party delivery orders generally do not qualify.
How AAdvantage Dining works
- Join: Sign in to AAdvantage Dining with your AAdvantage number and password, then create your dining profile. See AAdvantage Dining’s How It Works page.
- Link a card: Add a valid credit or debit card to your dining account before you pay. The card is how the program identifies an eligible transaction.
- Find a participating restaurant: Search the program’s listings and check the restaurant’s specific terms, including any spending limits or conditions. Participation and offers vary by restaurant; the AAdvantage Dining homepage provides the program’s restaurant search.
- Pay with the linked card: Eligible dining purchases are credited according to your earning level. Follow the listing’s instructions rather than assuming every purchase at a listed restaurant qualifies.
Which purchases can earn miles?
Dine-in and direct restaurant takeout
AAdvantage Dining identifies dine-in meals and takeout ordered directly from a restaurant as eligible ways to earn, when the restaurant listing supports the transaction. For takeout, place the order with the restaurant itself and pay with a card already linked to your dining profile. The help center’s dining-method guidance says orders placed through non-sponsored third parties do not qualify.
Restaurant-specific rules still apply
A listing does not make all spending at that business eligible. Restaurants may set their own limits and conditions, so review the current listing before you order. If the payment method, order channel, or transaction does not meet those terms, do not count on receiving dining miles.
How much can you earn?
The AAdvantage Dining Help Center’s published rates, updated February 20, 2025, depend on whether you receive program emails and whether you have reached VIP status:
| Level | Published rate | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | 1 AAdvantage mile per dollar | Opt out of AAdvantage Dining email communications. |
| Select | 3 AAdvantage miles per dollar | Opt in to AAdvantage Dining email communications. |
| VIP | 5 AAdvantage miles per dollar | Remain opted in and complete 11 qualified transactions in the calendar year; VIP-rate earning begins on the 12th qualified transaction. |
These are the help center’s published program rates, not a guarantee that every dollar of a restaurant bill will qualify. Review the restaurant’s terms and your account’s current program details. See How much can I earn with AAdvantage Dining?

How VIP status works
The help center says members qualify for VIP after 11 earning transactions in a calendar year while opted in to program emails. Under its published rate description, the first VIP-rate transaction is the 12th qualified transaction. VIP therefore depends on the number of qualifying visits or orders, not on reaching a particular dollar-spend threshold.
A separate VIP-retention article says members renew by completing 11 earning transactions in each calendar year and remaining opted in. It also describes VIP status as continuing through the end of the next full calendar year. Because those retention details come from help pages updated in 2023, check your account or the current help-center rules before relying on the status duration. The relevant pages are How do I get to be a VIP? and How do I keep my VIP membership?
Do dining miles earn Loyalty Points?
AAdvantage Dining says each eligible mile earned through the program earns one Loyalty Point. That rule applies to eligible dining earnings; it should not be extended automatically to every promotional bonus. American Airlines’ general AAdvantage terms and conditions say miles from offers are normally Bonus Miles and do not earn Loyalty Points unless the particular offer specifies otherwise.

If you already have a card that earns miles on restaurant purchases, linking it to AAdvantage Dining may let a qualifying transaction earn under both programs’ separate terms. For example, the published terms for the Citi / AAdvantage Globe Mastercard list 2 AAdvantage miles per dollar in specified restaurant categories. That does not establish that every dining transaction qualifies for both earnings, or that this card is necessary; check the card’s current category rules and the restaurant’s dining-program terms. See the Citi / AAdvantage Globe Mastercard terms and conditions.

Current welcome bonus: check the dates and conditions
As of October 8, 2026, AAdvantage Dining’s welcome-bonus page advertised 500 bonus miles for eligible new accounts enrolling from June 1, 2026 through January 9, 2027. The offer terms include creating a profile or web login, linking a valid credit or debit card, meeting the required spending and timing conditions, paying with the linked card, staying opted in to emails, and submitting an online review. The offer also has restrictions, including rules on combining it with other offers and restaurant-specific conditions. Eligibility is not automatic, and the promotion is time-limited; read the live welcome-bonus terms before enrolling or counting on the miles.
