The February 16, 2017, “Day Without Immigrants” action showed how farm work can depend on immigrant labor, but the clearest agriculture-specific account is from one Georgia farm: about 60 workers stayed home, with little immediate effect because the farm was not harvesting. The grower said that same absence during peak harvest could have caused a major loss. The available reporting does not establish nationwide crop losses caused by the protest.
What happened on February 16, 2017?
Immigrant workers and supporters stayed away from work or school for a one-day demonstration highlighting immigrants’ role in the economy and protesting immigration policies. Labor Notes reported actions across the country involving workers in different industries and students; in many places, organizers used social media and informal networks. Labor Notes’ report describes the broader action, rather than measuring its effect on agricultural production.
What did the Georgia farm experience show?
In a February 24, 2017 report, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that about 60 migrant workers relied on by Georgia grower Gary Paulk’s family stayed home for the demonstration. Paulk said there was little immediate impact because the farm was not harvesting. He said a similar absence at peak harvest “could be a huge loss.” The report did not quantify that hypothetical loss.
Why harvest timing matters
The account points to a practical distinction: when a farm is not harvesting, an absence may have limited immediate consequences; during a time-sensitive harvest, missing workers may put crops at risk. That is a concern described by one grower, not proof that every farm would experience the same outcome.

How the 2017 protest differs from the 2011 Georgia losses
The same 2017 newspaper report recounts a separate labor disruption in 2011, after Georgia enacted an immigration enforcement law. Paulk recalled that his family lost about $200,000 in crops after one-fifth of its Hispanic workers left. The report also attributed $74.9 million in statewide crop losses that year to labor shortages. Those figures concern 2011, not the February 2017 protest, and should not be used as a measure of its impact.
What the workforce figures can—and cannot—tell us
The American Immigration Council wrote in 2017 that undocumented workers made up more than one in four agricultural workers. That is a historical estimate published in 2017, not a current workforce measurement. The council’s agriculture overview provides broader workforce context, but it does not establish how many workers participated in the 2017 action or how much output it affected.

Contemporaneous Florida reporting described fear and anxiety among farmworker families amid immigration-enforcement concerns. That context helps explain the climate surrounding the action, but it does not show that every absence was caused by the protest or quantify crop production. NPR’s report from Florida covers those community concerns.

The cited accounts do not establish a national crop-loss estimate attributable specifically to the February 16, 2017, action. The Georgia farm report documents a local absence and describes why harvest timing can matter; it does not support extrapolating that farm’s experience into a nationwide total. The separate 2011 Georgia figures describe a different labor shortage and cannot fill that gap.
