The club’s accounts document growing revenue and substantial operating losses; they do not disclose the owners’ personal wealth or show that Wrexham generated that amount for them. What can be traced is how the pair took over the club, expanded its international profile and grew commercial activity.
What does the £308m claim mean?
Without a reliable source explaining who calculated £308 million and how, it cannot be treated as Reynolds and McElhenney’s combined net worth, the value of Wrexham AFC, or wealth created by the club. Those are different measures, and the club’s audited accounts do not provide a calculation for any of them.
Net worth refers to a person’s assets minus liabilities. A football club company’s turnover is the revenue it earns during an accounting period; its operating result is what remains after operating costs. Neither figure, by itself, tells readers what the owners personally own or owe. The claim needs an attributable source and a transparent method before it can be stated as fact.
How Reynolds and McElhenney acquired Wrexham
Reynolds and McElhenney agreed to buy Wrexham from its supporters’ trust in 2020. BBC Sport reported that 98.6% of trust members who responded backed the proposal, which was completed in February 2021. The takeover included an immediate £2 million investment into the club, according to BBC Sport’s account of the completion.

The owners’ pitch tied football investment to a wider commercial ambition: build Wrexham’s profile in the UK and internationally, create new revenue opportunities, and reinvest in the club and community. Reynolds told BBC Sport, “This is the third-oldest club on the planet and we don’t see why it can’t have a global appeal. We want Wrexham to be a global force.” The club’s global reach was part of the plan, not evidence of a particular personal-wealth outcome.
How the documentary and global attention fit in
Welcome to Wrexham followed the owners’ early experience of football ownership and the fortunes of the team and town. Its international audience gave the club a prominent platform for visibility and commercial partnerships. However, Wrexham’s 2025 accounts say the series does not generate direct income for the club; they describe its value as international marketing and support for partner activation and longer-term commercial development. That indirect promotional role should not be confused with a known sum paid to the owners.

Reynolds described the experience of ownership to BBC Sport as “very time consuming, emotionally exhausting, financially idiotic and utterly addictive.” It conveys the demands of running a club, but it is not a financial disclosure. The series is listed by Disney+.

The club attributed the turnover increase primarily to commercial, retail and matchday growth. It said the higher operating loss reflected the cost of promotion to the EFL Championship and increased investment in playing and non-playing staff. In 2024/25, 57.7% of turnover came from the Rest of the World, with North America the primary driver. The accounts also describe a new multi-year technical partnership with Macron and a global e-commerce platform with localized delivery through international retail partners.
Why club growth does not establish the owners’ wealth
A club can bring in more revenue while spending even more to compete and grow. Wrexham’s reported loss illustrates why turnover should not be presented as profit available to shareholders. Even a company profit would not automatically equal an owner’s personal gain: ownership interests, liabilities, reinvestment and other personal assets or debts matter to a net-worth calculation.

The 2025 statements say Reynolds and McElhenney remain majority shareholders and that the company’s ultimate shareholder comprises three investors. Apollo Sports Capital separately announced a minority investment in December 2025 and said Reynolds and Rob Mac remained controlling owners. Those details concern the club’s ownership structure, not the owners’ combined personal balance sheets.

Wrexham’s takeover and subsequent commercial expansion help explain how the club became more visible and developed new revenue streams. The audited accounts quantify the company’s performance through June 2025, but they do not verify a £308 million combined net worth or show that the owners created that sum through Wrexham. Until the figure is tied to a credible source and a clear calculation, it should be treated as unverified.
