Electric cars are reshaping the auto industry, but Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid are only three U.S. participants in a much larger shift. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says more than 20 million electric cars were sold worldwide in 2025—one-quarter of new-car sales—with China driving much of the volume. The three companies differ sharply in scale and focus: Tesla delivered about 1.64 million consumer vehicles that year, compared with Rivian’s 42,247 and Lucid’s 15,841.
How large is the global electric-car market?
The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that worldwide electric-car sales topped 20 million in 2025, up 20% from 2024 and equal to 25% of new-car sales. In the IEA’s terminology, “electric cars” can include battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids; the total should not be read as battery-electric-only.
Growth is uneven by region. China sold more than 13 million electric cars in 2025, nearly 55% of its new-car market. Europe sold 4.2 million, up more than 30% year over year, for a 28% share. In the United States, electric cars remained just under 10% of new-car sales, with the IEA associating policy changes with a drop toward year-end.

These are IEA figures for 2025, published in 2026. They provide the market context for judging U.S. automakers: a company’s delivery growth matters, but it does not by itself describe the pace or geography of the global transition.

Why do China and manufacturing geography matter?
The shift is not being driven by U.S. brands alone. Chinese automakers supplied 60% of global electric-car sales in 2025, while European and North American automakers supplied about 15% each. China also accounted for nearly 75% of global electric-car production and more than 80% of battery-cell production that year. Around one-quarter of electric cars produced in 2025 crossed national borders.
Those figures make production capacity, battery supply, trade and regional policy central to competition. The IEA’s 2025 sales data also show that a small number of models can have an outsized presence: the five best-selling battery-electric car models represented about 20% of global battery-electric sales. Tesla’s Model Y accounted for nearly 8% and Model 3 for 3.6%; the other three were the Geely Geome Xingyuan, Wuling HongGuang Mini and BYD Seagull. These model shares are for battery-electric cars, not the broader electric-car category that can include plug-in hybrids.
How do Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid compare?
The most directly comparable company figures here are completed deliveries for fiscal 2025. Production is a separate measure: a vehicle produced is not necessarily delivered in the same period, and neither figure alone establishes profitability or market share.

The figures are from Tesla’s and Rivian’s 2026 filings for FY2025 and Lucid’s 2026 full-year results for FY2025. Tesla’s production and delivery totals are approximate as reported. Lucid said its revised production total reflected its internal timing criteria for classifying production; the vehicles involved were expected to complete final validation in 2026.

What is distinctive about each company’s role?
Tesla: volume, recognizable models, and infrastructure investment
Tesla’s scale among the three is reinforced by the global reach of the Model Y and Model 3 in battery-electric sales. The company’s FY2025 filing also describes investment in vehicles, batteries, AI computing, service and charging infrastructure. That is Tesla’s stated strategy, not independent evidence that each investment will produce a particular outcome.
Scale did not mean unbroken growth in 2025. Tesla reported automotive sales revenue down 9% from 2024, attributing the decline to about 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price. This makes the company’s position more complex than model popularity alone: volume, selling prices and the financial returns from expansion all matter.

Rivian: a smaller consumer manufacturer with commercial ambitions
Rivian’s FY2025 deliveries were a small fraction of Tesla’s, but the company has more than one customer channel in view. Its 2025 filing describes the R2 program and electric commercial vans, broadening its plans beyond its existing consumer vehicles. The company’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, said in its FY2025 results release, “In 2025 we focused on execution as we laid the foundation for dramatically scaling our business.” That statement describes management’s aim; it is not proof that the planned scale has already been achieved.
In a July 2026 company release, Rivian reported 12,613 vehicles produced and 12,194 delivered in the second quarter. It raised its FY2026 delivery guidance to 65,000–70,000. Those quarterly results and forward-looking guidance are not like-for-like replacements for completed FY2025 totals, and the guidance is not an achieved result.

Lucid delivered 15,841 vehicles in 2025, making it the smallest by deliveries among the three. Its company-reported 2025 production total was revised to 17,840 under its internal classification timing; Lucid said the vehicles affected were expected to finish final validation in 2026. The distinction matters when comparing production with deliveries.

Lucid’s 2026 production guidance was 25,000–27,000 vehicles. That is a company target, not a completed-year result. Its delivery growth from a lower base can signal expansion, but volume alone does not establish durable financial performance.

The IEA estimated 23 million global electric-car sales in 2026, or 28% of total car sales. Its regional outlook projected growth of around 20% in Europe, China approaching 60% of car sales, growth above 50% in Asia Pacific excluding China, and a 45% rise in Latin America. These are IEA estimates and projections, not year-end actuals.
For Rivian and Lucid, the company guidance cited above likewise points to intended production or delivery levels rather than confirmed outcomes. Keeping forecasts separate from results is essential: an expanding market can create opportunity, but it does not guarantee that any particular manufacturer will meet its target, maintain margins or win customers.

How should consumers and market watchers assess their impact?
For a household considering an EV, these companies’ market influence does not answer practical questions such as the price of a specific vehicle, its availability, charging access, installation needs or total cost of ownership. Those depend on the model, location, electricity and fuel prices, incentives, insurance and individual driving patterns; the figures above do not settle them.
For judging industry impact, use several measures together rather than treating deliveries as a complete scorecard:
- Volume and trend: distinguish production from deliveries and compare completed periods.
- Affordability and segment coverage: assess which buyers and vehicle types are served; luxury, mass-market and commercial vehicles address different portions of demand.
- Manufacturing and supply: consider where vehicles and batteries are produced, and how capacity relates to actual output.
- Geographic reach: compare performance within the same country or region instead of inferring global market share from company totals.
- Charging and service access: infrastructure can affect usability and adoption, but stated investment should be distinguished from demonstrated availability and execution.
- Financial durability: examine revenue, pricing and profitability alongside growth. Delivery counts alone do not establish financial health.
Tesla, Rivian and Lucid are changing the competitive landscape as U.S. manufacturers with very different scales and strategies. Their influence is best understood as part of a global transition led by a much wider mix of manufacturers, markets, policies and supply chains—not as a stand-in for the entire EV revolution.
