A tailored marketing plan connects customer research and business goals to online channels, budgets, activities, and measurable progress.

A tailored marketing plan helps a business decide whom it wants to reach, what it wants to achieve, which online activities to use, and how to judge progress. Its value is practical: it makes priorities, costs, and trade-offs explicit so limited time and money are directed toward stated goals. A plan can support better decisions, but planning guidance does not establish that customization guarantees online success or a specific uplift.

What a tailored marketing plan does

As business.gov.au explains, “A marketing plan helps you define the strategy, activities and channels to promote your products or services.” Tailoring means connecting that strategy to a particular business’s customers, offer, objectives, budget, and capacity—not adopting a generic channel mix.

For an online business, the plan links audience research and positioning to measurable goals, channel choices, activities, costs, timing, and review. It helps answer not just “Where can we advertise?” but “Which activity is appropriate for this audience and goal, what will it require, and what evidence will tell us whether to continue?”

How to create a marketing plan

  1. Research customers, demand, and competitors

Start with current customers and potential customer segments. Identify their needs, preferences, and online channel use; assess demand and competitors; and look for a specific reason your offer is relevant or different. Business.gov.au’s marketing plan guidance and digital strategy guidance both emphasize grounding decisions in the market rather than assuming every business has the same audience.

  2. Choose a position

State who the business serves and why its product or service is a fit for those customers. This positioning gives the plan a basis for choosing messages and activities; without it, channel selection can become a list of tactics disconnected from the offer.

  3. Set a small number of measurable goals

Connect marketing goals to business objectives and make them specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). For example, business.gov.au gives “increase sales by 10% in the next 12 months” as a way to frame a target. It is an illustrative planning example, not a typical result or forecast.

  4. Select channels and activities that fit

For each option, consider whether the intended audience uses it, how it supports a stated goal, its cost and timing, the work required, and how you will assess its outcome. A channel is not automatically right because it is popular; the fit depends on the business and its customers. The Shopify marketing plan guide also discusses aligning marketing activity with business objectives.

  5. Budget and assign resources

Estimate the cost and timing of each activity and connect it to the goal it is meant to support. Include the work and capacity needed to deliver it, not only direct spending. The available guidance does not establish a universal share of revenue or budget that every business should put toward online marketing.

  6. Define targets and reporting

Decide what progress would look like for each goal and choose suitable analytics or platform reports. For website activity, business.gov.au names Google Analytics as one example for monitoring traffic and assessing whether content and digital ads drive sales. Microsoft’s small-business marketing guide also describes tools such as Google Search Console, business profile reporting, email dashboards, and social-platform analytics. Features and availability can change, so check what each tool currently reports.

  7. Review and adjust

Compare results with the targets, then refine or remove activities that are not working as intended. Revisit the plan when business conditions, objectives, or the customer base change. Government guidance recommends review but does not prescribe one schedule for every business; choose a review cadence that gives you useful information without making decisions on too little evidence.

How to compare online marketing options

When several activities could support a goal, compare them against the same practical criteria before committing budget. No source here establishes a universally best online channel or a standard return for a particular activity.

Decision factor Question to ask
Audience fit Does this audience use the channel, and can the activity reach the people the business intends to serve?
Goal fit Which stated business or marketing goal is the activity intended to support?
Cost and budget What will the activity cost, and is that cost supportable within the available budget?
Timing and effort When could it run, and what work or capacity is required to carry it out?
Measurability What observable outcome or report will help assess progress toward the goal?

How to measure whether online marketing is working

Measurement starts with the goal, not with a dashboard. A report is useful when it answers whether an activity is contributing to the intended outcome. Set a target, select a relevant metric and reporting source, and review the result in context. Website traffic, for example, can indicate whether people are reaching a site, while sales are closer to a sales goal; neither number alone explains every cause behind a change.

Depending on the activity, small businesses may use website analytics, search reporting, business profile reports, email dashboards, or social platform analytics. Start with free or built-in reporting where it meets the need. The Australian Government’s marketing plan tool and template can help organize goals, activities, budgets, and evaluation; a paid planner is not required to create a plan.

Use results to make a decision: continue an activity that appears to support its goal, adjust one that is underperforming, or stop one that is not worth its cost or effort. Avoid treating a short-term fluctuation or a single metric as proof of cause and effect.

What a tailored plan can—and cannot—tell you

A plan provides a structured way to choose and evaluate marketing activity as business conditions change. The cited government and commercial sources offer practical planning advice, not controlled evidence that tailored plans cause online success or yield a particular sales increase. Outcomes depend on the business, market, execution, and other conditions; no universal conversion rate, budget allocation, or review interval is established by these sources.
