How Social Security Benefits Work for Children and Dependents

Children may qualify for family or survivor benefits on a parent’s Social Security record. Learn the age and relationship rules, maximum amounts, family limits, and how SSI differs.

Children may qualify for Social Security on a parent’s record when that parent receives retirement or disability benefits, or after a parent dies. The two routes—family benefits and survivor benefits—have different triggers, but both depend on the worker’s record and the child’s circumstances. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a separate, needs-based program.

Which Social Security benefit might a child qualify for?

Social Security can pay benefits to an eligible child based on a parent’s covered work record. The Social Security Administration (SSA) puts it plainly: “When a parent receives Social Security retirement or disability benefits, or dies, their child may also receive benefits.” The payment is based on the parent’s record, not the child’s work history. The main routes are family benefits while a parent receives retirement or disability payments, and survivor benefits after a parent dies.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Route What triggers it Whose record determines the benefit General amount basis
Family benefit A parent is entitled to Social Security retirement or disability benefits The living parent’s earnings record Up to half of the parent’s full retirement or disability benefit, subject to applicable rules and the family maximum (SSA, May 2026)
Survivor benefit A parent dies after working in covered employment The deceased parent’s record; the worker must meet insured-status requirements Up to 75% of the deceased parent’s basic benefit, subject to applicable rules and the family maximum (SSA, May 2026)

These percentages are ceilings, not individual estimates. SSA determines entitlement and the payable amount using the worker’s record, insured status, relationship evidence, and the rules in effect. For the agency’s general eligibility descriptions, see Who can get Family benefits and Who can get Survivor benefits.

The key difference is the event that opens the route. A family benefit is tied to a parent’s current entitlement to retirement or disability benefits. A survivor benefit follows a parent’s death and depends on whether the deceased worker had enough covered work to meet Social Security’s insured-status rules. The two routes therefore are not interchangeable, even though their general child age and relationship rules are similar.

Who counts as an eligible child?

For both family and survivor benefits, SSA’s general rules cover an unmarried child under 18; an unmarried, full-time elementary or secondary school student aged 18 or 19; or an adult child whose disability began before age 22 and who meets SSA’s disability criteria. Relationship rules can also cover stepchildren and adopted children, as well as some grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Meeting an age category alone does not establish eligibility: SSA evaluates the relationship and other requirements for the particular case.

These categories answer the basic age question, but the relationship must also qualify under SSA rules. A child’s eligibility may depend on whether the worker is a parent, stepparent, adoptive parent, grandparent, or step-grandparent, and the circumstances supporting that relationship. For a grandchild, for example, SSA has specific dependency conditions rather than a blanket rule for anyone being raised by a grandparent. Ask SSA to review the particular family relationship rather than assuming that a household arrangement alone establishes entitlement.

For the rules specific to each route, consult SSA’s family-benefit eligibility page or survivor-benefit eligibility page. A child’s marriage, school status, or other changed circumstances may affect eligibility and should be reported to SSA.

Can a child receive benefits on a grandparent’s record?

Possibly, but a grandparent raising a grandchild does not automatically qualify the child for benefits on the grandparent’s record. SSA describes additional dependency conditions. Generally, the child must have begun living with the grandparent before age 18 and received at least half of their support from that grandparent during the year before the grandparent became entitled to benefits or died. Other rules apply, including limits involving contributions from the child’s natural parents.

These requirements make timing and support important. The relevant period is the year before the grandparent became entitled to benefits or died, and the child must have started living with the grandparent before turning 18. Even if those facts appear to fit, other dependency and relationship conditions may still matter. SSA’s rules do not support assuming that every grandchild in a grandparent’s care qualifies.

Because the outcome depends on the child’s living arrangements, support, relationship, and the benefit route, a grandparent should ask SSA to evaluate the specific circumstances. SSA’s Parents and Guardians page provides information for caregivers.

How much can a child receive?

In its May 2026 publication Benefits for Children, SSA says a child may receive up to half of a parent’s full retirement or disability benefit. A child receiving survivor benefits may receive up to 75% of the deceased parent’s basic Social Security benefit. The two percentages use different benefit bases, and neither promises a particular dollar amount.

For family benefits, “up to half” refers to the parent’s full retirement or disability benefit. For survivor benefits, “up to 75%” is based on the deceased parent’s basic benefit. These figures are useful for understanding the broad maximums, but they are not a personalized quote or a guarantee that each eligible child receives that percentage. SSA calculates the payable amount from the worker’s record and applies the relevant rules, including any family maximum.

How the family maximum affects payments

SSA’s May 2026 publication gives a family-maximum range of 150% to 180% of the parent’s full benefit amount. The maximum limits the total payable to eligible family members on a worker’s record. If their combined payments would exceed the applicable limit, SSA reduces family members’ benefits proportionately; the worker’s own benefit is not reduced as part of that calculation. This is another reason a published maximum percentage should not be treated as the amount a particular child will receive.

The family maximum matters when more than one family member is eligible on the same worker’s record. It applies to the total family payments, not just to one child’s potential benefit. Thus, even when a child meets the eligibility rules, the amount payable can depend on how many eligible family members are drawing benefits and the total calculated under SSA’s rules. SSA must determine the applicable limit and reduction for the individual record.

How an adult child with a disability may qualify

An adult child may be eligible on a parent’s Social Security record if the disability began before age 22 and SSA’s disability criteria are met. Depending on the route, the parent generally must be deceased or receiving retirement or disability benefits. SSA calls this a child’s benefit because it is based on the parent’s earnings record; the adult child does not need a separate work history for this pathway. SSA must decide whether the disability and family circumstances meet its rules. See the agency’s survivor-benefit eligibility information and family-benefit eligibility information.

The age-22 rule concerns when the disability began, not simply the person’s current age. An adult child does not qualify under this route merely because they have a disability now; the disability must have begun before age 22, and SSA’s disability criteria must be satisfied. The parent’s status also matters: the route is generally tied to a parent who is deceased or receiving retirement or disability benefits. Because SSA evaluates the onset and family circumstances, families should confirm eligibility with the agency.

How SSI differs from a child’s benefit on a parent’s record

SSI is not a family or survivor benefit. A child may qualify for SSI based on a qualifying disability and the program’s income and resource rules for the household. By contrast, a child’s family or survivor payment is based on a parent’s covered earnings record and the rules for that benefit route. The programs have different eligibility tests; one should not be treated as a substitute name for the other. SSA provides information for families through Parents and Guardians.

This distinction can help families decide what question to ask. For a family or survivor benefit, the central issues include the worker’s record, the child’s relationship to the worker, and age, school, or disability rules. For SSI, the disability and household income and resource requirements are central. The fact that a child does or does not qualify on a parent’s earnings record does not, by itself, answer whether the child may qualify for SSI.

When a child’s or caregiver’s benefit changes or stops

The child’s own payment

The standard age-based child benefit generally ends at 18. If the child remains an unmarried, full-time elementary or secondary school student, payments may continue to age 19. A child who qualifies under the disability route—with disability beginning before age 22 and SSA’s criteria met—may qualify beyond those ages. School attendance, marriage, and other circumstances can affect eligibility, so report changes to SSA rather than assuming a payment will continue.

Do not confuse the student extension with a general benefit for anyone aged 18 or 19: SSA’s rule refers to an unmarried, full-time elementary or secondary school student. The disability pathway is a separate rule with its own onset and disability requirements. SSA should be told about a change in school attendance, marriage, income, or another relevant circumstance so it can determine whether payments should continue or change.

A caregiver’s payment

A parent or caregiver may receive a separate benefit because a qualifying child is in their care. SSA says that payment generally stops when the child turns 16, subject to conditions for continued payment when the child has a qualifying disability. The caregiver’s payment and the child’s own benefit are distinct: the child’s payment may continue after the caregiver’s payment ends if the child remains eligible.

This is a difference in both recipient and stopping age. A caregiver payment is paid to the parent or caregiver because the child is in their care; the child’s own benefit is for the child on the worker’s record. The caregiver payment generally ends at age 16, while the child’s own benefit may continue under the under-18, student-to-19, or disability rules. One payment ending does not automatically mean the other must end.

How to apply for a child’s survivor benefit

SSA’s June 1, 2026 notice says an application for a child’s survivor benefit cannot be completed online. The family must call or visit a local Social Security office. SSA advises contacting it as soon as possible because the date of contact can affect when benefits begin. Have the deceased parent’s Social Security number ready when calling, and follow SSA’s current instructions: required documents and procedures can vary by case.

  1. Contact SSA by phone or visit a local Social Security office; do not rely on an online application for a child’s survivor benefit.
  2. Have the deceased parent’s Social Security number ready when you call.
  3. Ask SSA what evidence and documents are needed for the child’s relationship and circumstances, and follow the office’s current directions.
  4. Report relevant changes after applying or once payments begin, including changes in school attendance, marriage, or other circumstances that could affect eligibility.

The application procedure described here is for survivor benefits for children. For a child’s family benefit on a living parent’s retirement or disability record, contact SSA for the current application process and documentation requirements. Do not assume that the survivor-claim procedure or its document requirements also apply to a family-benefit claim.

Timing is worth taking seriously: SSA says the date the family contacts the agency can affect when payments begin. That is why the practical first step after a parent’s death is to call or visit SSA promptly, even if the family still needs to confirm which documents apply. The agency’s current instructions should guide the application because requirements can differ by situation and can change over time.

Who manages a child’s payments?

Most beneficiaries under 18 have a representative payee to receive and manage their Social Security payments. SSA says the payee must use the money first for the beneficiary’s current basic needs, save any remaining funds for the beneficiary, and report changes that may affect eligibility. A power of attorney alone does not authorize someone to act as an SSA representative payee. See SSA’s Representative Payee Program information.

A representative payee’s role is to manage the beneficiary’s payments in the beneficiary’s interests, not to treat the money as unrestricted household income. Current basic needs come first; any funds left over must be saved for the beneficiary. Payees also have a reporting duty when a change could affect eligibility. A power of attorney does not replace SSA’s appointment of a representative payee.

Keep SSA informed about changes in circumstances, including school attendance, marriage, or other relevant changes. A representative payee has a specific responsibility to report changes that could affect the beneficiary’s eligibility.

What to verify with SSA

SSA makes the individual entitlement and payment decisions. Before relying on an expected benefit, ask the agency to assess the worker’s record, insured status where relevant, the child’s relationship and dependency, school or disability status, and the family maximum. Income thresholds, earnings limits, and documentation requirements can change; use SSA’s current instructions or speak with an SSA representative for details that apply to the case.

For a survivor claim, confirm the deceased worker’s insured status and the child’s relationship and circumstances. For a family benefit, confirm the living parent’s entitlement to retirement or disability benefits and the child’s eligibility category. For a grandchild or step-grandchild, ask specifically about the relationship and dependency conditions. For a child with a disability, clarify what SSA needs to evaluate the disability criteria and when the disability began. These are case-specific determinations, not conclusions that can be made from the maximum percentages alone.

Start with the agency’s FAQ on benefits for children and students, then use its dedicated family or survivor eligibility guidance for the relevant route.

Can my child get benefits after a parent dies?

A child may qualify for survivor benefits on a deceased parent’s record if the worker paid Social Security taxes and meets the required insured-status rules. The child must also meet the applicable age, school, marital-status, disability, and relationship requirements. SSA says a child survivor-benefit application cannot be completed online; call or visit an SSA office promptly.

How much does a child get from Social Security?

SSA’s May 2026 publication says a child may receive up to half of a parent’s full retirement or disability benefit, or up to 75% of a deceased parent’s basic benefit for survivor benefits. These are maximums, not guaranteed amounts. The worker’s record, applicable rules, and family maximum determine the payable amount.

Can a grandchild get benefits on a grandparent’s record?

Possibly, but raising a grandchild does not automatically qualify the child. SSA generally requires that the child began living with the grandparent before age 18 and received at least half of their support from that grandparent in the year before the grandparent became entitled to benefits or died. Other dependency conditions apply, including limits related to contributions from the child’s natural parents.

What happens when a child turns 18?

The standard age-based child benefit generally ends at 18. It may continue to age 19 if the child is unmarried and a full-time elementary or secondary school student. An adult child may qualify under a separate disability route if the disability began before age 22 and SSA’s criteria are met. Report school, marriage, and other relevant changes to SSA.

Is SSI the same as a child’s Social Security benefit on a parent’s record?

No. A family or survivor benefit is based on a parent’s covered work record. SSI is a separate needs-based program, with its own qualifying disability and household income and resource rules. SSA must evaluate each program under its own requirements.

The Bottom Line

A child may qualify for family benefits on a living parent’s retirement or disability record, or survivor benefits on a deceased parent’s record. Age, school, disability, relationship, dependency, and the worker’s record all matter; published percentages are maximums, not promises. Ask SSA to determine eligibility and the amount, and contact the agency promptly about a child survivor claim.
