Re:

How Social Security Benefits Are Calculated and What Determines Your Monthly Check

Social Security retirement benefits start with up to 35 years of wage-indexed covered earnings. Here is how SSA turns that record into a monthly benefit—and how claiming age, COLAs and working before full retirement age can change the amount.

Your Social Security retirement check is based on your covered earnings record, the age you claim, and later adjustments such as cost-of-living increases. The Social Security Administration (SSA) wage-indexes eligible past earnings, uses up to 35 of your highest-earning years to calculate an average, and applies a progressive formula to produce your primary insurance amount (PIA). Your actual monthly payment can differ from that amount because of your claiming age, later adjustments, and payment deductions.

How is a Social Security check calculated?

The calculation has two main stages: SSA turns your covered earnings into an average indexed monthly earnings figure (AIME), then applies the formula for your eligibility year to get your PIA. The PIA is the benefit amount associated with claiming at full retirement age (FRA), before later adjustments. SSA describes it as the basic Social Security benefit amount in its 2026 benefit calculation examples.

1. SSA adjusts eligible past earnings for wage growth

Social Security does not simply add up the dollar amounts shown on every old W-2. It wage-indexes covered earnings from earlier years to reflect changes in national average wages. Earnings before the applicable indexing year are adjusted; earnings in or after that year are treated at face value under the relevant method. Only earnings covered by Social Security count toward this calculation.

2. SSA selects up to 35 years

SSA selects as many as 35 of your highest indexed-earnings years. It totals those years and divides by 420 months—the number of months in 35 years—then rounds down to the next lower dollar to determine AIME. If you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, zero-earning years can fill the unused years in the calculation and lower the average. Additional covered earnings may help if they replace a lower-earning year among the years used.

This is why both the amount and the length of your covered work history matter. One unusually high-earning year does not automatically determine the benefit; it is considered alongside the other years selected for the calculation. Conversely, adding a year of covered earnings later in your career can improve AIME if it displaces a year with lower or zero earnings. A year’s earnings above that year’s taxable maximum do not add further covered earnings for the calculation.

3. SSA applies the PIA formula

The formula uses three portions of AIME, with different percentages applied to each. Those percentages are fixed, but the dollar thresholds—called bend points—are wage-indexed and depend on the year you become eligible. For retirement, that year is generally the year you reach age 62, not the year you apply.

For workers eligible in 2026, the bend points are $1,286 and $7,749. The formula is 90% of the first $1,286 of AIME, plus 32% of the amount from $1,286 through $7,749, plus 15% of AIME above $7,749. These are 2026 figures, not permanent thresholds; SSA lists current amounts on its Social Security benefit amounts page.

The formula is progressive, not a flat percentage of earnings. The first portion receives the highest percentage, while the next and any amount above the second bend point receive lower percentages. The bend points divide AIME into ranges; they do not mean that all of a worker’s AIME is multiplied by whichever percentage applies to the top range.

A worked 2026 example

SSA’s 2026 example uses a worker with AIME of $5,825 and FRA 67. Applying the 2026 bend points gives a PIA of $2,609.80. If that worker claims at age 62, SSA shows a monthly benefit of $1,826. The example illustrates the calculation, not a prediction for another worker: the result depends on the person’s earnings record, birth year, eligibility year, FRA, and claiming month. What determines the size of your monthly benefit?

  • Your covered earnings. Higher indexed earnings can raise AIME, but earnings above the annual taxable maximum do not count toward the covered-earnings calculation for that year.
  • How many years you worked in covered employment. A record with fewer than 35 earning years may include zero years; more years can replace low or zero years if they become part of the 35 highest.
  • Your eligibility year. It determines the bend points used in the PIA formula.
  • Your age and month when you claim. Claiming before FRA reduces the monthly amount; delaying can increase it through delayed retirement credits, subject to age rules.
  • Later COLAs and payment adjustments. Cost-of-living adjustments raise benefits over time, while some deductions and whole-dollar rounding affect the amount ultimately paid.
  • Work while receiving benefits before FRA. The retirement earnings test can withhold some payments temporarily; it is separate from the lifetime earnings formula.

The formula is progressive: the percentage applied to the first portion of AIME is higher than the percentage applied to later portions. That is why it is inaccurate to describe Social Security as replacing one flat percentage of everyone’s lifetime pay. The result is also not determined by the last salary alone.

Does the age I claim change my Social Security check?

Yes. The PIA is adjusted according to your claiming age. Claiming before FRA permanently lowers the monthly amount under the early-retirement reduction rules; delaying past FRA can raise it through delayed retirement credits, within the applicable age limits. SSA says people born after 1942 accrue delayed credits at 8% per year, and its benefit overview says no delayed retirement credit is given after age 69. The exact reduction or increase depends on your birth year and the month benefits begin, so do not apply one percentage to every claimant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing possible claiming dates, use estimates based on your own SSA earnings record and consider more than the monthly number:

  • How much the monthly benefit changes between the dates you are considering.
  • How many months or years of payments you would forgo by delaying.
  • Your expected work and income before FRA, including possible earnings-test withholding.
  • Your household circumstances, including relevant survivor or family-benefit considerations.
  • Your own health, savings, and need for income now versus a larger monthly payment later.

These considerations do not yield a universal best age or a reliable break-even age for every household. SSA’s calculation examples show how claiming age changes the monthly amount, but an individual choice requires that person’s circumstances and current estimates.

How do COLAs and deductions affect the amount paid?

Cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) increase the benefit over time. SSA applies the COLA to the PIA and then recalculates the payable benefit using the applicable early- or delayed-claiming factor. As a result, an individual check may not increase by exactly the headline COLA percentage: the calculation sequence, whole-dollar rounding, and any deductions matter. SSA explains this process in Application of COLA to a Retirement Benefit.

For 2026, SSA announced a 2.8% COLA based on the CPI-W comparison described in its 2026 COLA Fact Sheet. That is the COLA for 2026, not a forecast of future increases. A payment can also reflect an offset such as a Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance premium and is rounded down to a whole dollar.

What happens if I work while collecting Social Security?

You can receive retirement benefits and work at the same time, but if you are below FRA, the retirement earnings test may temporarily withhold benefits when earnings exceed the applicable annual limit. It does not change the underlying 35-year formula, and withholding should not be described as a permanent penalty. SSA reviews later earnings and may increase a benefit if new covered earnings improve the record.

For 2026, the limits are:

Situation in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding rule
Below FRA for the entire year $24,480 $1 withheld for each $2 earned above the limit
Reach FRA during 2026 $65,160, applying only to earnings before the month FRA is reached $1 withheld for each $3 earned above the limit before the FRA month
FRA reached No earnings limit starting in the FRA month No earnings-test withholding starting in that month

These are annual 2026 limits and should not be carried forward to a later year. SSA explains the rules in its work-and-retirement-benefits FAQ, dated January 2, 2026, and the 2026 COLA Fact Sheet.

What do the 2026 figures mean for an individual estimate?

These current figures provide context, but none is a substitute for your own earnings record or estimate.

2026 figure What it represents What it does not represent
$1,286 and $7,749 PIA bend points for workers eligible in 2026 Timeless thresholds for every eligibility year
$184,500 Maximum earnings subject to Social Security tax in 2026 A maximum benefit amount; SSA benefit examples depend on covered earnings over many years
2.8% SSA’s 2026 COLA A guarantee that every personal check rises by exactly 2.8%
$2,071 per month SSA’s estimated average monthly benefit for all retired workers payable in January 2026 after the COLA; the pre-COLA estimate was $2,015 An individual projection or promise

The $184,500 taxable maximum means earnings above that threshold do not add to covered earnings for 2026. It is not the maximum possible benefit: benefits reflect the covered earnings history used in the formula, and SSA’s maximum-benefit examples assume sustained earnings at the taxable maximum across many years. See SSA’s maximum-taxable benefit examples and the 2026 fact sheet.

The $2,071 figure is a population average for retired workers payable in January 2026 after the COLA, not a typical amount that every person should expect. Averages combine people with different earnings records and claiming histories. For the same reason, an example benefit or a maximum-benefit illustration cannot replace an estimate built from your own record.

How can I estimate my own benefit?

  1. Review your earnings record. Check the wages and self-employment income SSA has recorded for each year. Errors or missing years can affect the calculation that uses your highest indexed earnings.
  2. Use SSA’s current estimate for your record. Compare estimates for different claiming ages rather than applying a general average or the 2026 example to yourself. Your birth year, expected future earnings, and claiming month matter.
  3. Check the assumptions behind each estimate. Confirm whether it assumes you continue working and at what earnings level; consider how that may change the years used in the 35-year calculation.
  4. Recheck current rules when planning a future year. Bend points, taxable maximums, COLAs, and earnings-test limits can change. Use the SSA pages linked above for the relevant year.

The best starting point is your own record and estimate, not an average retired-worker benefit. SSA’s benefit calculation page provides examples of the formula, while its benefit amounts page lists the relevant year-specific values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Social Security use 35 years of earnings?

SSA uses up to the 35 highest indexed-earnings years, totals them, and divides by 420 months to calculate AIME. If you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, zero years can be included, lowering the average. Additional covered earnings can help if they replace a lower or zero year in the calculation.

Does my last salary determine my Social Security benefit?

No. The calculation considers up to 35 years of covered earnings, wage-indexes eligible past earnings, and averages the selected years. Your last salary alone does not determine your check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the 2026 bend points used for everyone who retires in 2026?

No. The formula’s bend points generally correspond to the year you reach age 62, not the year you file. For workers eligible in 2026, the bend points are $1,286 and $7,749; other eligibility years can have different thresholds.

If I work while receiving benefits, will Social Security permanently reduce my benefit?

Not necessarily. Before FRA, the retirement earnings test can temporarily withhold payments above the annual earnings limit. That test is separate from the lifetime earnings formula, and SSA may later increase the benefit if additional covered earnings improve the record.

Does a 2.8% COLA mean my individual check rises by exactly 2.8% in 2026?

Not always. SSA applies the COLA to the PIA and recalculates the benefit using the applicable claiming-age factor; rounding and payment deductions can also affect the final check. The 2.8% figure is the 2026 COLA, not a forecast for later years.

Is the 2026 average retired-worker benefit a good estimate of my own check?

No. SSA’s $2,071 monthly figure is an estimated average for all retired workers payable in January 2026 after the COLA. Your own amount depends on your earnings record, eligibility year, FRA, claiming date, later adjustments, and possible deductions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Your monthly Social Security retirement benefit begins with up to 35 years of wage-indexed covered earnings, which SSA converts to AIME and then to a PIA using the formula for your eligibility year. Claiming age, COLAs, deductions, and—in some cases—temporary earnings-test withholding affect the amount paid. Use your own SSA earnings record and current estimates to compare claiming dates; 2026 averages and thresholds are context, not personal projections.
