The Social Security Administration (SSA) wage-indexes earlier earnings, uses up to 35 years to calculate your average indexed monthly earnings (AIME), applies the formula for your year of eligibility to determine your primary insurance amount (PIA), then adjusts that amount for your claiming age and later cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). The resulting gross benefit is not necessarily the amount deposited in your bank account.
How SSA calculates a retirement benefit
The calculation moves from your earnings record to a base benefit, then to the amount payable for your claiming month. The figures below concern a worker’s own Social Security retirement benefit; they do not calculate spouse, survivor, disability, or Supplemental Security Income benefits.

1. SSA wage-indexes earlier earnings
Social Security retirement eligibility begins at age 62. To account for changes in national wage levels over time, SSA adjusts most earnings from earlier years before using them in the calculation. For a worker first eligible in 2026, earnings before 2024 are indexed using the national average wage index for 2024. Earnings from 2024 onward are counted at face value in this calculation. SSA’s wage-indexing factors explain the method.

2. SSA selects up to 35 years to calculate AIME
SSA selects your highest indexed earnings years, totals them, and divides by the number of months in the computation period, up to 420 months (35 years). The result is your average indexed monthly earnings, or AIME, rounded down to a whole dollar. SSA’s benefit-calculation explanation describes this process.
If you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, the calculation still uses up to 35 years: months without earnings effectively count as zeros and lower the average. A later year of covered earnings can improve your record if it is high enough to replace one of the lower years used in the calculation.
The 35-year figure is a maximum number of years used, not a requirement that you work exactly 35 years or a promise that SSA will use every year you worked. When there are more years available, the calculation uses the highest indexed years; a lower year outside that group will not displace a higher one. When there are fewer than 35 years, the missing years have no earnings to add to the total, but the averaging period still reaches up to 420 months. That is why a short work history or gaps in covered work can matter even when the years you did work were relatively well paid.
3. SSA applies the PIA formula
The primary insurance amount, or PIA, is the base monthly amount for a worker claiming at full retirement age, before early- or delayed-claiming adjustments. SSA applies three percentages to portions of AIME, called bend-point segments. The percentages are fixed, but the dollar thresholds change based on the year you first become eligible—generally the year you reach age 62 for retirement benefits.
For a person first eligible in 2026, the formula is:
- 90% of the first $1,286 of AIME;
- 32% of AIME above $1,286 through $7,749; and
- 15% of AIME above $7,749.
The portions are added together to determine the PIA, subject to SSA’s rounding rules. The $1,286 and $7,749 bend points apply to people first eligible in 2026; they are not universal thresholds for every retiree. SSA publishes bend points by eligibility year.

For example, using the 2026 bend points, a hypothetical AIME of $3,000 would produce a PIA calculation of 90% of $1,286, plus 32% of the remaining $1,714. This illustrates only the formula; it is not an estimate for any particular worker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The formula applies the percentages to slices of AIME rather than applying one percentage to the entire amount. In this example, the first slice receives the 90% rate and the portion above that first bend point receives the 32% rate. If AIME extends above the second bend point, only that excess portion is calculated at 15%. The bend points determine where each slice ends; they are not themselves benefit amounts. Because bend points vary by eligibility year, using the 2026 formula for someone whose eligibility year differs can produce the wrong illustration even if the person’s AIME is known.
4. SSA adjusts the benefit for when you claim
Your PIA is not automatically the amount you will receive. Starting benefits before full retirement age (FRA) permanently reduces the monthly amount; delaying after FRA increases it through delayed retirement credits, up to age 70. There is no additional increase for delaying past 70. The exact adjustment depends on your birth date and the month benefits begin. SSA’s guidance for people born in 1960 or later gives the applicable age rules.
For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. A worker who reaches 62 in 2026 and claims then would receive about 30% less per month than if they claimed at FRA. That reduction concerns the monthly amount; whether early or delayed claiming fits someone’s circumstances also depends on payment timing, cash-flow needs, health and work plans.
In practical terms, claiming earlier means payments start sooner but the monthly retirement amount is lower; delaying means waiting for payments in exchange for a higher monthly amount through age 70. A useful comparison is not just the two monthly figures in isolation. Consider how many years of payments each choice would provide, when you need income, whether you plan to keep working, and your health assumptions. No claiming age is best for every worker, and estimates should be based on the person’s actual earnings record rather than a general average or maximum-benefit example.
5. COLAs and payment-stage adjustments affect later checks
After benefits begin, COLAs adjust the benefit. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%; SSA estimated that average monthly benefits for all retired workers rose from $2,015 to $2,071, effective in 2026. That is an average, not a prediction for an individual’s check. Rounding and other payment-stage adjustments can also mean a particular monthly payment does not rise by exactly the headline COLA percentage. SSA’s 2026 COLA fact sheet provides the figures.

What can raise or lower your monthly benefit
Your covered earnings record
Higher indexed earnings can raise AIME, while a low-earning year or a year with no covered earnings among the 35 selected years can lower it. Working additional years may increase the benefit if those earnings replace a lower year in the calculation. Only earnings up to the applicable Social Security taxable maximum count for each year. In 2026, that maximum is $184,500; earnings above it do not count as covered earnings for the 2026 benefit calculation. SSA’s 2026 fact sheet lists this limit.
Your year of first eligibility
The PIA bend points are tied to the year you reach 62, so two workers with the same AIME but different eligibility years can have different dollar thresholds in the formula. Use the bend points for the relevant eligibility year, not a figure taken from another year.
Your claiming month
Claiming early trades a smaller monthly benefit for receiving payments sooner; delaying after FRA trades later payments for a higher monthly amount, with credits stopping at 70. There is no universally best claiming age. When comparing options, look at the estimated monthly amount at each age, how long payments may be needed, your cash-flow and work plans, and whether the estimate reflects your actual earnings record.

Before FRA, the retirement earnings test may temporarily withhold benefits when wages or net earnings from self-employment exceed an annual limit. For 2026, a person under FRA for the entire year can earn up to $24,480 ($2,040 per month) before SSA deducts $1 in benefits for every $2 above the limit. In the calendar year the person reaches FRA, SSA counts earnings only through the month before FRA: the 2026 limit is $65,160 ($5,430 per month), with $1 deducted for every $3 above it. Beginning with the FRA month, earnings do not reduce benefits under this test. SSA explains the earnings test and work rules.
These deductions are not necessarily a permanent loss of the withheld months. At FRA, SSA recalculates the benefit to credit months in which benefits were withheld. Continued work can also raise the benefit if new covered earnings replace a lower year in the 35-year record. The earnings test is about wages or self-employment earnings, not investment income.
The two 2026 earnings limits are not interchangeable. The lower limit applies when a person stays below FRA for the whole year; the higher limit applies only in the year the person reaches FRA and counts earnings only before the FRA month. Once the FRA month begins, earnings no longer reduce retirement benefits under the test. So a worker deciding whether to continue working should distinguish a temporary withholding of checks from a change in the underlying earnings record: at FRA, SSA recalculates for months withheld, and additional covered work may independently improve the record if it replaces a lower year.

Gross benefit versus the amount deposited
The calculated retirement benefit is a gross amount. The bank deposit can be lower if an applicable deduction or offset is taken from the payment. For example, a Medicare Part B premium may be withheld when that arrangement applies. The amount deposited therefore should not be treated as interchangeable with the PIA or a gross benefit estimate. Tax treatment of benefits and other possible deductions are separate questions; the calculation described here does not determine them.

2026 benefit figures: how to interpret them
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| $1,286 and $7,749 | 2026 PIA bend points for people first eligible in 2026. |
| $184,500 | 2026 Social Security taxable maximum; earnings above this amount do not count as covered earnings for that year’s calculation. |

| $65,160 per year ($5,430 per month) | 2026 earnings-test limit in the year a person reaches FRA; only earnings before the FRA month are counted, and $1 in benefits is deducted for every $3 above the limit. |
| 2.8% | 2026 COLA; SSA estimated the average retired-worker benefit rose from $2,015 to $2,071 per month. |
| $2,969 at age 62; $4,152 at FRA; $5,181 at age 70 | SSA maximum-benefit illustrations for someone with taxable-maximum earnings every year beginning at age 22 who starts benefits in 2026. These are not typical or generally applicable checks. |
| $2,071 per month | SSA’s estimated average retired-worker benefit after the 2026 COLA, not an estimate of any particular person’s benefit. |
The maximum illustrations assume a long career of earnings at the taxable maximum and a specific 2026 start date. Most people should not use them as a forecast. Personal amounts vary with earnings history, eligibility year, claiming age and applicable adjustments. SSA’s 2026 fact sheet reports the maximum illustrations and average.
These examples answer different questions from an individualized estimate. The average is a description of retired workers as a group, while the maximum figures assume taxable-maximum earnings beginning at age 22 and a particular start age in 2026. Neither amount should be substituted for a personal projection. Likewise, the taxable maximum limits how much of a given year’s earnings count; it does not mean that everyone earning that much will receive the listed maximum, since the examples assume that high earnings over a long career.
How to find your own estimate
A general formula cannot produce an individualized amount without the person’s earnings record, birth date and intended claiming month. The most useful next step is to review SSA’s estimate based on your record, then compare possible claiming ages.
- Sign in to your my Social Security account and review your earnings record. Check for missing or incorrect years, since the record is an input to the calculation.
- View the retirement estimates available for different claiming ages. Use the age and month you are actually considering rather than treating one estimate as a fixed benefit at every age.
- Compare the monthly amounts alongside the timing of payments, work plans and cash-flow needs. If you expect to keep working, consider both the earnings test before FRA and whether new earnings could replace a low year.
- Distinguish the gross estimate from the amount you expect to receive after any applicable deductions or withholding.
This is a framework for reading SSA estimates, not individualized financial advice. It covers worker retirement benefits only. It does not determine income taxes on benefits, spouse or survivor benefit amounts, disability benefits, SSI, Medicare eligibility, or special government-pension cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are Social Security retirement benefits calculated?
SSA wage-indexes earlier covered earnings, selects the highest indexed years up to 35, and averages them over as many as 420 months to calculate AIME. It then applies the PIA formula for the worker’s eligibility year and adjusts the result for the month benefits begin. Later COLAs and any applicable payment deductions can affect the check.

Does claiming Social Security at 62 permanently reduce my monthly benefit?
Claiming before full retirement age reduces the monthly amount for life. For people born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67; a worker who reaches 62 in 2026 and claims then would receive about 30% less per month than at FRA. Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly amount after FRA through age 70, with no added increase for delaying past 70.
Will working while collecting Social Security reduce my benefits?
Before FRA, the earnings test may temporarily withhold benefits if wages or net self-employment earnings exceed the applicable annual limit. In 2026, the limit is $24,480 for someone under FRA all year, with $1 withheld for every $2 above it. In the year of FRA, the limit is $65,160 for earnings before the FRA month, with $1 withheld for every $3 above it. Beginning in the FRA month, earnings do not reduce benefits under this test. SSA recalculates at FRA to credit months when benefits were withheld.
Is my Social Security estimate the amount that will be deposited in my bank account?
Not necessarily. An SSA estimate or calculated retirement benefit is a gross amount. Applicable deductions or offsets can reduce the deposit; for example, a Medicare Part B premium may be withheld when that arrangement applies. A gross benefit, PIA and net deposit are different amounts.
Where can I see an estimate based on my own earnings?
Sign in to my Social Security to review your earnings record and available retirement estimates for different claiming ages. Check that the earnings history is accurate, and compare estimates using the age and month you are actually considering. Individualized amounts depend on your record, birth date, claiming month and applicable adjustments.
The Bottom Line
Social Security retirement benefits are calculated from indexed covered earnings, up to 35 years of work, and the PIA formula for the year you become eligible. Claiming age, continued work, COLAs and applicable deductions can change the amount or the deposit. Use your my Social Security record for a personal estimate, and treat averages and maximum-benefit illustrations as context—not a forecast.
