Scooter Braun’s reported $400 million fortune is best understood as an estimate of what he personally netted from the 2021 sale of Ithaca Holdings to HYBE—not as a verified figure for his current net worth. HYBE America paid about $1.045 billion to Ithaca’s shareholders and creditors, but that company-level payment was not Braun’s personal payout.
How Scooter Braun built his business
He started with artist management
Braun founded SB Projects in 2007 and discovered Justin Bieber on YouTube in 2008. He helped build Bieber’s profile through social media, and SB Projects grew to encompass artist management, a publishing venture and Schoolboy Records, according to the Associated Press.
Ithaca expanded beyond management
Braun founded Ithaca Holdings as a broader holding company. A 2016 Fortune profile described Ithaca as an investment fund backing companies including Spotify and Uber, as well as a holding company for SB Projects and interests in music management businesses. The profile noted that Braun declined to discuss some arrangements; it does not establish his ownership percentages or investment returns.
By the time HYBE announced its acquisition, Ithaca’s interests spanned music, technology, film, television, brands and culture. The portfolio included Big Machine Label Group. HYBE’s filing also lists operations in artist management, publishing, content production, record labels and television and OTT content. These businesses help explain how Ithaca became a substantial entertainment company, but the public records do not break out how much Braun personally earned from each line.

Big Machine was part of Ithaca’s history
Ithaca bought Big Machine Label Group in 2019 and sold Taylor Swift’s master recordings to an investment fund the following year, the AP reported. The available reporting does not establish Braun’s personal profit from either transaction, so neither should be treated as a separately documented source of a specific amount of his wealth.
What the 2021 HYBE deal paid—and to whom
On April 2, 2021, HYBE announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, HYBE America, would acquire all of Ithaca Holdings, including SB Projects and Big Machine Label Group. The Korea Exchange filing later recorded that HYBE America paid existing Ithaca shareholders and creditors $1,044,951,796.87 on May 7, 2021.
Rank #2
The filing breaks that closing payment into approximately $927 million in merger consideration and about $118 million used to repay debt. It is a figure for the transaction as a whole, not the amount Braun personally received.
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| About $1.045 billion | Total paid by HYBE America to Ithaca shareholders and creditors at closing on May 7, 2021, according to the Korea Exchange filing. |
| About $86.2 million | Value at the time of approximately 462,380 HYBE shares AP reported Braun was to receive. This is a disclosed share allocation, not a complete accounting of his proceeds. |
| More than $400 million | A 2021 estimate of Braun’s personal net proceeds from the transaction, reported in a Variety interview republished by Yahoo. It was not an audited disclosure. |
The AP’s account of corporate filings also reported that Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande were each allocated 53,557 HYBE shares worth almost $11 million at the time. Those allocations, like Braun’s reported shares, are components of the transaction—not evidence of the full amount any individual received.

That is a reported estimate, not an audited statement of his proceeds. HYBE’s official announcement did not give a headline purchase price, while Braun’s official biography now retrospectively describes the purchase as $1.2 billion. That description differs from the exchange filing’s $1.045 billion closing payment; the figures should not be combined as if they were the same measure.
What Ithaca’s financial figures do—and do not—show
The exchange filing reports that Ithaca had $400.739 million in assets and $131.727 million in revenue in 2020. These are historical company figures. Assets are not the same as a founder’s personal wealth, and revenue is not profit or personal income. The filing does not show how much of Ithaca Braun owned or how its reported financial results translated into his proceeds.

The available sources do not establish Braun’s verified current net worth. The $400 million figure is an estimate of personal proceeds tied to the 2021 Ithaca transaction, not a current balance-sheet calculation. Publicly cited deal figures do not account for personal taxes, liquidity, retained equity, other assets and liabilities, or subsequent investment performance.
His roles also should not be mistaken for a measure of personal wealth. In August 2023, AP reported that Braun had become sole CEO of HYBE America in January of that year. His official biography currently describes him as chairman of Ithaka Management Group, a HYBE senior adviser and board member, and a general partner at TQ Ventures. These are profile descriptions, not a disclosure of his finances.
