A savings account earns interest according to the rate, balance method, compounding rules, and crediting schedule in its account disclosures. The bank may calculate interest on each day’s balance or use an average daily balance. Interest can accrue during a period before it is added to the account, so the date it is calculated and the date it appears in your balance are not necessarily the same.
To understand an interest amount—or compare accounts—look beyond the advertised rate. Check the annual percentage yield (APY), how balances and balance changes are treated, whether the rate can change, any balance thresholds, and when interest is credited. These terms determine what a particular account actually pays.

What determines how much interest your account earns?
A bank applies an interest rate to an eligible balance using the method described in the account’s disclosures. In a simplified daily-accrual example, interest for a day depends on the eligible balance that day and a daily rate derived from the annual rate according to the account’s convention. The daily amounts are then accumulated for the relevant period, subject to the bank’s balance, rate, and rounding rules.
That description is a way to understand the mechanics, not a universal formula for every savings account. Some accounts use a daily balance method; others use an average daily balance method or another method disclosed by the institution. The account agreement and rate disclosures—not a general rule about what banks usually do—establish which method applies.

The amount can change when the balance changes, the rate changes, or a balance condition affects eligibility. A deposit made earlier in a period may be included in more days’ balances than one made later. A withdrawal can reduce the balances used from that point forward. If the rate changes during the period, the calculation may involve different rate segments. A precise estimate therefore requires the account’s actual balance and rate history as well as its calculation rules.
Interest rate and APY are different figures
The interest rate is the rate used to calculate interest under the account’s method. APY, or annual percentage yield, expresses the annual effect of the rate and compounding frequency. Regulation DD defines APY as the percentage rate reflecting the total interest paid on an account based on the interest rate and compounding frequency over a 365-day period. That makes APY useful for comparing the stated annual yield of accounts, but it does not erase differences in account terms or guarantee a particular future return.
Compounding is what allows interest already added to the balance to earn interest, too. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains it this way: “Compound interest is when you earn interest on the money you’ve saved and on the interest you earn along the way.” Its example shows the effect over time: at 5% with annual compounding, $1,000 earns $50 in the first year and becomes $1,050. If it remains at 5% for a second year, the $1,050 earns $52.50, producing $1,102.50.
Those figures are a CFPB teaching example, not a current account offer or a forecast for a variable-rate account. The second year’s interest is higher because the calculation applies to a balance that includes the first year’s interest. If interest is not yet credited to the balance, the applicable disclosure determines how accrued interest is handled in the account’s calculation.

APY is not the same thing as the interest rate, and neither figure alone answers every question about your statement. Regulation DD also provides for an “APY earned” figure calculated for a statement period using specified formulas and the balance and period involved. That statement figure concerns interest earned over the period; it is not simply another name for the account’s stated rate.
How balance methods affect the calculation
Daily balance method
With a daily balance method, the bank applies a periodic rate to the balance for each day, as defined in the account disclosures. The day-to-day balance matters: a deposit or withdrawal can affect the daily balances included in the period. To reason through a simplified illustration, take each eligible daily balance, apply the relevant daily rate, and add the resulting daily interest amounts. The account’s own convention controls how the daily rate is derived, which balance is eligible, and how amounts are rounded.
“Calculated daily” describes how interest accrues; it does not by itself mean the bank adds interest to the account every day. A bank may calculate interest daily and credit it less frequently. The distinction matters because an amount that has accrued but has not yet been credited is not necessarily treated like interest already included in the posted balance.

Average daily balance method
Under an average daily balance method, the bank adds the principal balances for each day in the relevant period and divides that total by the number of days in the period. It then applies the account’s disclosed rate and rules to the resulting average as specified in the disclosure. If the balance changed during the period, the average reflects how long each balance was in place rather than just the balance on the final day.

For example, an account that has different balances on different days will not be represented accurately by looking only at its month-end balance. The daily-balance and average-daily-balance methods use balances differently; a customer checking an interest calculation should identify which one the account specifies before trying to reproduce the amount.
Balance thresholds and tiers
Some account disclosures include minimum-balance conditions or rate tiers. A threshold can affect whether an account qualifies for a stated rate, how much of the balance earns that rate, or whether interest is earned under specified conditions. The details vary by account. Check the disclosure for the threshold, the measurement period, and the consequence of falling below it rather than assuming that every dollar receives the headline rate.
Accrual, compounding, and crediting: what happens when?
These terms describe related but different events:
- Accrual: interest is earned during a period under the account’s calculation rules.
- Crediting: the bank adds the earned interest to the account balance.
- Compounding: credited interest becomes part of the balance that can earn interest in a later calculation.
The events may occur on different schedules. CFPB Regulation DD discusses examples in which interest is calculated daily but credited monthly or quarterly. Those examples show that daily calculation and less-frequent crediting can coexist; they do not establish the schedule for every savings account. Your account agreement or disclosures state the applicable calculation, compounding, and crediting terms.

The statement period may end before the account’s next crediting date, or the statement may show interest credited during the period that was earned under earlier calculations. Regulation DD’s APY appendix addresses treatment of accrued but uncredited interest in specified statement-timing cases. For your own account, use the statement dates and the account’s disclosed schedule to interpret what is included; do not assume the visible posted amount captures every day’s accrual at that exact moment.

How to check an interest amount on your statement
- Find the relevant account terms. Use the savings account agreement, rate disclosure, and statement. Identify the interest rate and APY in effect, whether the rate is variable, the balance method, and the crediting schedule.
- Set the period. Note the statement or calculation period and the number of days involved. Interest may be calculated over a period that does not match a calendar month, so use the dates stated for the account.
- Track balance changes. List deposits and withdrawals with their dates, then determine which daily balances or principal balances enter the calculation under the disclosed method.
- Account for rate changes and tiers. If the rate changed during the period, identify the applicable rate for each segment. Check whether a minimum balance or tier condition changed the rate or eligibility.
- Follow the stated method and schedule. Apply the disclosed balance and rate rules, including the account’s convention for deriving the periodic rate and rounding. Distinguish the amount accrued from the amount credited on the statement.
- Ask the institution about a mismatch. If your result differs, ask which balances, dates, rate segments, thresholds, and rounding rules were used. A calculation based only on the ending balance or advertised APY may not reproduce the bank’s figure.
Without the account’s exact terms and history, a hand calculation is only an estimate. In particular, using one rate for a full period when the rate changed, or using the closing balance instead of the balances specified by the account’s method, can produce a different result.
What to compare before choosing or reviewing an account
Compare the actual disclosures for the accounts in question. Regulation DD model clauses and official interpretations address balance methods, compounding and crediting disclosures, variable-rate disclosures, and minimum-balance conditions. The relevant terms are account-specific, so an advertisement or a single rate figure may not answer how the account will treat your circumstances.
- Interest rate and APY: identify both figures and whether the rate can change. APY reflects compounding over a 365-day period, while the interest rate is applied under the account’s calculation method.
- Balance method: look for daily balance, average daily balance, or another disclosed method.
- Compounding and crediting frequency: confirm how often interest accrues, compounds, and is added to the balance; these are not necessarily the same interval.
- Minimums and tiers: determine whether a balance threshold changes eligibility or the rate paid, and how the bank measures it.
- Changes within a period: check how deposits, withdrawals, and variable-rate changes are treated.
These points make a comparison more useful than selecting an account on APY alone. They also help explain why two accounts—or the same account in different periods—may produce different credited amounts even when a quoted rate looks similar.
Why a savings interest estimate can be wrong
A quick estimate can be useful for understanding the general effect of a rate, but it may not match a bank’s calculation. Common causes include using the APY as though it were the periodic interest rate, overlooking a rate change, applying the ending balance to every day, missing a minimum-balance condition, or treating an accrual date as a crediting date.

When an estimate is meant to represent a specific account, use the account’s actual disclosed terms and the balance and rate history for the period. If that information is incomplete, the estimate should be described as illustrative rather than as the amount the bank must pay. For variable-rate accounts, do not project a current rate across a future period as though it were fixed.
What the rules establish—and what they leave to the account terms
CFPB Regulation DD supplies disclosure requirements and definitions, including the APY framework and examples of balance, compounding, crediting, and statement calculations. CFPB consumer guidance provides the compound-interest example above. Together, those materials explain how to read the mechanics, but they do not identify one universal calculation or payment calendar for all savings accounts.
This is a general U.S. explanation. A particular institution’s agreement, rate disclosure, and periodic statement determine the applicable calculation and schedule, and account terms and rates may change. Consult those documents for your account rather than assuming another bank’s practices apply.
