When Treasury yields rise, the market prices of existing fixed-rate Treasury bonds generally fall. New bonds offer investors higher yields, so an older bond’s fixed payments become less attractive unless its price drops. How much it falls depends on its cash flows, coupon and duration—not just its maturity date. A lower market price does not by itself mean the Treasury has missed a payment: it matters most if you need to sell before maturity, while a bond fund’s share price reflects the changing market value of its holdings.

Why bond prices fall when Treasury yields rise

A fixed-rate Treasury promises specified interest payments and, at maturity, repayment of its face value. Those payments do not rise just because market yields have gone up. Buyers therefore compare the bond’s fixed cash flows with the yields available on newly issued or already-trading securities. If newer securities offer more, the older bond generally has to sell for less to make its remaining payments competitive.

Price and yield move in opposite directions for fixed-rate bonds. Yield to maturity is the return implied by the bond’s current price and its scheduled payments, assuming the stated payments are made and the bond is held to maturity. When the price falls, the yield to maturity available to a new buyer rises. TreasuryDirect explains that a security’s price depends on its yield to maturity and the interest rate set for the security. The SEC’s investor bulletin describes the same inverse relationship as a basic principle of bond investing.

This relationship concerns market value: the price buyers and sellers would currently assign to the bond. It does not alter the coupon or face value promised by an individual Treasury. The market can reprice those fixed payments every day, even though the payment schedule itself remains unchanged.

A dated SEC illustration: $1,000 becomes $925

The SEC’s June 26, 2013 investor bulletin uses a hypothetical Treasury with a 3% coupon and $1,000 face value. In the example, when market rates are 3% and the bond has 10 years remaining, its illustrated price is $1,000. One year later, the bond has nine years remaining and market rates are 4%; the illustrated price is $925, with a 4% yield to maturity for a buyer at that price.

This is a teaching example, not a forecast or a current quote. It shows why a buyer would not generally pay the old $1,000 price for the same fixed payments when comparable market rates have moved higher. The precise market price of a real security depends on its terms and market conditions.

What determines how much a Treasury price moves

Two bonds can respond differently to the same change in yields. Comparing sensitivity is most useful when you account for the securities’ cash-flow patterns rather than relying on maturity alone.

Duration: a first-pass sensitivity estimate

Duration is a measure of interest-rate sensitivity, not simply the date when the bond matures. Macaulay duration is a cash-flow-weighted measure of when an investor receives a bond’s payments. Modified duration translates that measure into an approximate percentage price response to a small change in yield. In general, a higher duration indicates greater sensitivity to a given yield move.

For example, if a holding’s modified duration is available from a fund or brokerage, you can use it to compare its approximate rate sensitivity with another holding. Treat the figure as a yardstick, not a promise of the exact change in price or total return. The estimate focuses on a small yield change and does not, by itself, account for every factor affecting what you earn.

Maturity and coupon shape sensitivity

When otherwise comparable securities are considered, a longer maturity generally means more exposure to changes in market yields. More of the bond’s cash flows arrive farther in the future, so changes in the rate used to value them can have a larger effect on today’s price. A lower coupon generally also means greater sensitivity than a higher coupon on an otherwise comparable bond, because less of the promised cash flow arrives earlier as interest.

These are comparisons, not an exact ranking across all bonds. A bond with a longer maturity is not necessarily more sensitive than every shorter-maturity bond if their coupons and other features differ. Duration offers a more useful first-pass comparison because it reflects the timing and amount of cash flows; even then, its estimate has limits.

Convexity matters when yield moves are larger

A bond’s price-yield relationship is curved rather than a straight line. Modified duration approximates the response to a small yield change, but becomes less accurate as the change grows. Convexity describes this curvature and helps explain why a duration-only estimate is not an exact calculation for a larger move. The Federal Reserve’s 2006 yield-curve paper sets out the formal definitions of duration and convexity.

This limitation is especially important when someone turns duration into a precise prediction. The estimate does not establish what a particular bond or portfolio will return after a large rate move. Cash flows, the path of yields, reinvestment of coupon payments and other risks can affect the outcome.

What a falling price means for an individual Treasury

A Treasury’s market price can fall while the security remains on schedule to make its promised payments. The government backing relates to those contractual payments; it does not prevent market prices from moving down when yields rise. The SEC explicitly notes that the seesaw between interest rates and bond prices applies even to securities guaranteed by the U.S. government.

If you sell an individual Treasury before maturity, the sale price may be below what you paid. Selling at that lower price realizes a market loss relative to your purchase price, although coupon payments received along the way also affect your overall result. The amount you receive on a sale is determined by the market at that time, not simply by the face value printed on the security.

If you hold the individual security to maturity, interim price changes may matter less to your plan because you are not selling at the lower market price. That is a different situation from selling early, and it remains subject to receiving the promised payments. Holding to maturity does not make a Treasury the right choice for every investor: you still need to consider when you need the money and whether the scheduled payments fit that need.

It helps to separate two questions: “What is the bond worth if I sell it today?” and “What payments is this individual bond scheduled to make if held to maturity?” The first changes with market conditions. The second is set by the security’s terms, subject to the promised payments being made.

How rising yields can affect a bond fund

A bond fund owns a portfolio rather than one Treasury with one maturity date. Its share value reflects the market value of the securities it holds. When yields rise, fixed-rate bonds in the portfolio generally lose market value, which can put downward pressure on the fund’s share price. The size and timing of the effect depend on the fund’s holdings and how those holdings change.

Unlike an individual Treasury, a fund does not give you one bond’s single maturity date at which you can expect that bond’s face value. The fund holds a changing pool of securities, and its shares continue to be valued using the market value of that pool. As a result, you should not treat a bond fund as if it were one Treasury that can simply be held to a matching maturity date to recover a particular purchase price.

A fund’s duration can help you gauge interest-rate sensitivity, but it remains an estimate, not a total-return forecast. Coupon income, reinvestment, changing yields and fund expenses also affect outcomes. FINRA identifies duration as a useful way to assess sensitivity and notes that bond funds can lose value as rates rise.

How to assess your portfolio’s exposure

You do not need to predict the next move in Treasury yields to understand where rate sensitivity sits in your portfolio. Start with the holdings and the time when you may need to use the money. The goal is to identify exposures and trade-offs, not to infer a guaranteed result from one statistic.

  1. List the bond positions. Separate individual Treasuries from bond funds. For individual securities, note the maturity, coupon and whether you may need to sell before maturity. For funds, identify the fund’s disclosed holdings and duration if available.
  2. Compare duration where it is provided. A higher duration generally signals more sensitivity to a given yield change, all else equal. Use the figure to compare exposures, not to calculate an exact future portfolio loss.
  3. Consider maturity and coupon together. Longer maturity and lower coupon tend to increase sensitivity in otherwise comparable bonds. Avoid treating either feature as a complete risk measure on its own.
  4. Match the exposure to your cash needs. Ask whether a price decline would force you to sell at an unfavorable time, or whether you can rely on an individual security’s scheduled payments instead. A fund does not have the same single maturity date as an individual Treasury.
  5. Account for risks beyond interest rates. FINRA lists inflation, call, default and other risks for bonds and bond funds. A lower duration does not eliminate investment risk, and Treasury credit backing does not eliminate market-rate risk.

A useful comparison is not “Which holding is safe?” but “Which risks am I taking, and when might I need to sell?” A shorter-duration holding may have less sensitivity to a given rate change than a comparable longer-duration one, but that does not make it risk-free or establish that it fits your circumstances.

Diversification can spread exposure, but cannot guarantee against loss

Holding different maturities or combining types of bonds can diversify a bond allocation. The SEC’s corporate-bond investor bulletin describes diversification approaches that include different maturities and combinations of corporate, Treasury or municipal bonds. This is a way of spreading exposure, not a personalized allocation prescription. Diversification does not guarantee that a portfolio will avoid losses when yields rise, nor does it remove the other risks attached to the securities held.

What to check before acting on a yield move

A rising yield is not, by itself, an instruction to sell or buy. Before acting, distinguish a change in market price from a change in the security’s payment terms, and consider whether the position is an individual Treasury or a fund. Then ask whether your decision depends on selling before maturity, and whether a duration estimate is being used as a rough comparison or incorrectly treated as a precise forecast.

Current Treasury yields and prices are time-sensitive. The educational sources cited here explain the mechanics but do not provide a durable current yield statistic. For a real-time decision, consult dated Treasury market data rather than relying on an old rate or the SEC’s illustrative 2013 example.
