The Guardian described him in May 2026 as “worth hundreds of millions,” but did not publish an exact valuation or explain its method. That makes Stephen Lansdown of Bristol City the clearest wealth comparison in the available figures: Forbes estimated Lansdown’s real-time net worth at $3.2 billion as of 11 September 2026. The estimates are not directly comparable, and they do not establish a definitive ranking of Championship owners.
What is Doug King’s net worth?
King’s exact personal net worth is not established by the public sources cited here. The Guardian described him as “worth hundreds of millions” in a 5 May 2026 article, but gave no precise amount or valuation method. That is a broad media characterization, not a published balance-sheet calculation or a figure King has confirmed. The Guardian’s report is therefore useful for general context, not for assigning King a precise net worth.
A more specific number often associated with King is £333.25 million. The72 included that estimate in a Championship owners ranking on 6 March 2023, but the methodology and underlying evidence are not established in the available reporting. It is an old, weakly sourced estimate—not a verified current valuation—and should not be treated as fact. The72’s 2023 ranking is the source for that figure.
How does King compare with other prominent club owners?
The clearest published comparison is Stephen Lansdown, Bristol City’s owner. Forbes listed his real-time net worth at $3.2 billion as of 11 September 2026. Forbes’s figure is an estimate for an individual, while the Guardian’s description of King is qualitative and The72’s estimate is from 2023. Differences in date, method and precision mean the figures should not be presented as a like-for-like league table.

| Owner and club | Published wealth information | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Doug King, Coventry City | “Worth hundreds of millions,” The Guardian, 5 May 2026 | Qualitative description of an individual; no exact valuation or method stated. Source. |
| Doug King, Coventry City | £333.25 million, The72, 6 March 2023 | Dated estimate for an individual in a club-owner ranking; methodology not established in the available reporting. Not a verified current valuation. Source. |
| Stephen Lansdown, Bristol City | $3.2 billion, Forbes, as of 11 September 2026 | Forbes real-time net-worth estimate for an individual, with an explicit as-of date. Source. |
| Srivaddhanaprabha family, Leicester City | No comparable current personal or family wealth figure established here | Leicester City said on 15 September 2026 that the family remained the club’s ultimate and beneficial owner; that ownership statement is not a wealth estimate. Source. |
On the evidence available, Lansdown’s Forbes estimate is substantially higher than the Guardian’s broad description of King’s wealth. But a precise gap cannot be calculated from “hundreds of millions,” and the dated £333.25 million estimate does not make that comparison reliable. The Leicester ownership statement identifies who owns the club, not the family’s net worth.
Why club finances do not reveal an owner’s personal wealth
Ownership records and club accounts can establish who controls a football club and describe the club’s finances. They do not provide a complete account of an owner’s personal assets and liabilities. A club’s turnover, debts, net assets, loans from an owner or stadium value is not the same thing as that owner’s net worth.

The EFL’s public register lists King for Coventry City and Lansdown for Bristol City. The EFL register establishes club ownership and directorship information, not personal wealth. Companies House lists King as a director of Coventry City Football Club Limited and CovCityCo Ltd. Companies House officer information likewise records company appointments rather than a personal balance sheet.
Coventry City’s accounts for the year ended 31 May 2023 identified CovCityCo Ltd as the parent undertaking and King as the ultimate controlling party at that balance-sheet date. The club’s 2024 accounts were approved on 19 December 2024. These are company-level records, not a valuation of King’s total wealth. Coventry City’s accounts announcement provides the club-level context.

Is Coventry City still a Championship club?
The league comparison is time-sensitive. The Guardian reported Coventry’s return to the Premier League in 2026, so the club’s division depends on the season being discussed. The information cited here does not establish Coventry’s league position as of October 2026. A comparison described as being “in the Championship” should therefore specify the relevant season rather than imply that Coventry is currently in the division.
Can you rank the Championship’s wealthiest owners?
Not reliably from these figures. A defensible ranking would require comparable, dated estimates with consistent subjects and methods—individual owners should not be mixed with families, and club valuations should not be substituted for personal wealth. The available information offers a notable Forbes estimate for Lansdown, a broad Guardian description and a dated estimate for King, and an ownership statement for Leicester without a corresponding wealth figure. It is enough to make a cautious comparison, but not to identify a definitive richest-owner order.

King’s personal net worth remains unverified in the sources cited here. The most careful description is that the Guardian characterized him in May 2026 as worth hundreds of millions, while the precise figure and his rank among club owners remain unknown.

In a BBC Radio 4 interview reported by BBC Sport on 15 October 2025, King said: “I’m very hands on, it’s a big deal.” The comment describes his approach to running the club; it does not provide evidence about the size of his personal fortune. BBC Sport’s report carries the statement.
