How much government grant revenue did Columbia report?
Columbia’s FY2025 financial reporting lists $1.3 billion in government grant revenue, roughly equivalent to the amount received in FY2024. The fiscal year ended June 30, 2025. Columbia does not label this revenue category as federal-only, so it is most accurate to call it government grant revenue rather than federal revenue. Columbia University Finance’s FY2025 financial statements describe the figure and its year-over-year comparison.
Why is another figure about $1.641 billion?
Columbia’s audited federal-awards schedule lists $1,640,993,168 in federal award expenditures for the year ended June 30, 2025. This is not a second estimate of the same revenue total: the schedule is an accrual-basis expenditure measure, and its scope includes federal assistance received directly and awards passed through other primary recipients. It also includes federal student-loan program amounts. The audited schedule and notes provide the total and explain its scope.

How large is that against Columbia’s overall finances?
Columbia reported $6.7 billion in operating revenue and $6.6 billion in operating expenses for FY2025. Government grants and contracts are generally associated with research, while patient care and tuition are also major sources of revenue. The $6.7 billion operating-revenue total is broader than government grant revenue and is not a government-only figure. Columbia’s financial overview provides the broader institutional context.
What happened to grants during FY2025?
The annual total came amid a funding disruption. Columbia reported that more than 350 grants were terminated in spring 2025. Under a July 2025 resolution agreement, all 260 grants included in the agreement were reinstated; Columbia said reimbursements resumed and it was repaid for expenses it had carried while reimbursement was paused. These developments help explain why a full-year total does not show the strain or timing of funding during the year. Columbia’s summary of the July 23, 2025 agreement describes the restoration of most grants terminated or paused in March, overdue payments, and eligibility to apply for new federal research funding in the ordinary course.

Columbia’s summary says the agreement also required a $200 million settlement to the federal government over three years and a separate $21 million settlement of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission investigations. Those settlement amounts are not grant revenue and should not be netted against or added to the grant and award figures above.
