How RBI Repo Rate Changes Affect Fixed Deposit and Loan Rates

RBI repo changes can influence loan and FD rates, but they do not automatically reset every product. Your loan benchmark and reset clause—and the bank’s FD pricing—matter.

How do RBI repo rate changes affect fixed deposit and loan interest rates? They can influence both, but a repo-rate decision does not automatically reset every loan or deposit. A loan’s benchmark and reset terms determine how a change reaches its rate; banks decide when and how to adjust deposit offers, and existing fixed-term deposits generally keep their contracted rate until maturity.

How a repo-rate change reaches bank rates

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) policy repo rate is the rate at which banks borrow short-term funds from the central bank against eligible collateral. A change can affect banks’ funding costs and market rates, but the pass-through to customer rates depends on the product, its benchmark, the contract and each bank’s pricing decisions. That is why loan rates and deposit rates—and fresh and existing accounts—may move by different amounts or at different times.

How repo changes affect loans

Floating loans linked to an external benchmark

For covered floating-rate retail loans and loans to micro and small enterprises, RBI requires banks to use an eligible external benchmark. The policy repo rate is one permitted benchmark. If your loan is linked to it, the benchmark change provides a relatively direct route to a change in your loan rate, subject to the spread and reset terms in your contract. See the RBI regulatory handbook for the framework.

RBI’s 2025 handbook says external-benchmark-linked retail and MSME loan rates reset at least once every three months. A repo-rate announcement therefore need not change your EMI that same day: the lender applies the benchmark at the contractually scheduled reset, and the resulting payment or loan-tenor change depends on the product terms and lender’s implementation.

Other floating-rate loans and fixed-rate loans

Some floating-rate loans use a different benchmark, such as the bank’s marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR). These rates can respond to repo changes, but not necessarily by the same amount or on the same schedule as a repo-linked rate. A fixed-rate loan generally does not track each RBI policy decision; its rate follows the fixed-rate terms in the agreement.

For EMI-based personal loans, RBI’s January 10, 2025 FAQ describes borrower notifications and options under its instructions on resetting floating interest rates. The applicable options depend on your loan and lender; check the agreement and the lender’s notice rather than assuming a rate change must alter the EMI in one particular way.

What to check in a loan agreement

  • Rate type and benchmark: Is the rate fixed or floating, and which benchmark determines it?
  • Spread: What margin is added to the benchmark, and can it change under the contract?
  • Reset frequency and next reset date: When will the lender apply a benchmark change?
  • Payment or tenor treatment: Does a rate change alter the EMI, the remaining term, or another contractual feature?
  • Switching or refinancing terms: What options, conditions and costs apply if you want to change the rate type or lender?

How repo changes affect fixed deposits

Existing deposits

An existing fixed-term deposit (FD) does not automatically reprice when the repo rate changes. Its rate is generally the rate agreed when the deposit was opened, subject to the deposit’s terms. RBI analysis notes that the maturity profile of fixed-rate deposits can slow the transmission of policy-rate changes to banks’ funding costs.

New deposits and renewals

A bank may change the rate it offers on new FDs or renewals as its funding needs and market conditions change. The change is a bank pricing decision, not an automatic one-for-one adjustment to the repo rate. Compare the offered rate and tenor, and check the bank’s premature-withdrawal terms before choosing or renewing a deposit. Current offers vary by bank and should be confirmed directly with it. See the RBI analysis of monetary transmission.

What past RBI data shows about pass-through

Historical figures illustrate why one repo-rate move should not be treated as a universal rule for every customer. During the tightening period from May 2022 to September 2024, the RBI reported a 250-basis-point rise in the policy repo rate. Over that period, repo-linked external benchmark-based lending rates (EBLRs) also rose 250 basis points, while the one-year median MCLR rose 170 basis points; the MCLR series ran through October 2024.

Over the same tightening period, the weighted average lending rate (WALR) rose 186 basis points on fresh rupee loans and 118 basis points on outstanding rupee loans. Weighted average rates on fresh term deposits rose 251 basis points, compared with 192 basis points on outstanding term deposits. These are RBI aggregate measures for the stated period, not current offers or a forecast for an individual bank, borrower or depositor. The RBI Bulletin reported that banks had revised repo-linked EBLRs by a similar magnitude to the 250-basis-point policy-rate increase since May 2022. Read the RBI Bulletin’s monetary-transmission figures for the period and measures.

How to respond to a rate change

If you have a loan

  1. Find the loan’s rate type, benchmark, spread, reset frequency and next reset date in your agreement or lender statement.
  2. Ask the lender how the next reset will affect your rate and whether it changes the EMI, the term or another feature under your contract.
  3. If considering a switch or refinance, compare the contractual options and costs with the potential benefit before deciding.

If you have or are renewing an FD

  1. Confirm whether the deposit is still within its contracted term or is due for renewal.
  2. Compare the bank’s current offer for the tenor you need, and review premature-withdrawal terms.
  3. Base the decision on the available offer and your liquidity needs, not on an assumption that a repo-rate move guarantees a matching FD-rate change.
