The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026. That does not mean every home-loan rate, EMI or savings return rises by the same amount—or changes immediately. The effect depends on your loan’s benchmark and reset terms, while banks have flexibility over deposit rates.
What the RBI’s latest rate decision means
The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee met from October 5 to 7, 2026, and unanimously raised the repo rate to 5.50%. It also shifted its stance to calibrated tightening, citing a less benign inflation outlook and broadening price pressures. The repo rate is a policy signal, not a rate automatically applied to every bank product.
The RBI’s rate dashboard showed 5.25% at 1:00 p.m. on October 6, before the policy announcement. The October 7 decision is the later update: the repo rate is 5.50% following that decision.
Will my existing home-loan EMI increase?
It may, but a repo-rate hike does not automatically change every home loan. First identify whether your loan is floating or fixed, which benchmark it follows, the lender’s spread over that benchmark, and when the loan resets. Your agreement and the lender’s calculation determine how a benchmark change affects your rate and repayment.

Since October 1, 2019, scheduled commercial banks other than regional rural banks have been required to link new floating-rate personal or retail loans to an external benchmark, such as the RBI repo rate or specified Treasury-bill rates. Banks set a spread subject to RBI rules and the loan contract. This rule does not mean every existing loan is directly linked to the repo rate.
A change can take time to reach borrowers. The RBI describes monetary transmission as affecting money-market rates, bond yields, bank lending and deposit rates, and asset prices over months—and sometimes more than a year. Your contractual reset date also matters, so the impact may not appear on the day of an announcement.

How a lender can adjust repayment
If a floating-rate benchmark reset raises your interest rate, the lender may increase your EMI, extend the number of EMIs while keeping the payment unchanged, or combine both approaches. The balance between payment size and repayment period depends on the lender’s calculation and your loan terms.
What the lender must communicate
RBI guidance requires lenders to notify borrowers of an EMI or tenure increase caused by an external-benchmark change. Borrowers must also receive quarterly statements showing, at minimum, principal and interest recovered to date, the EMI, the number of EMIs remaining and the annualised interest rate for the loan’s tenor. Check the reset notice alongside your latest statement and sanction letter.

What can I do when my floating rate resets?
RBI guidance says regulated lenders must offer borrowers options when a reference-benchmark reset increases rates. The listed options apply to equated-installment personal loans linked to external or internal benchmarks, including loans to existing borrowers.
| Option | What changes | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Increase the EMI | The monthly payment rises; the number of installments may stay unchanged. | Whether the higher payment fits your budget and how much interest remains under the revised schedule. |
| Extend the repayment period | The EMI stays unchanged while the number of installments increases. | The longer repayment period and total interest under the lender’s updated schedule. |
| Combine a higher EMI with a longer period | The lender adjusts both the payment and the remaining number of installments. | The monthly payment, new end date and total remaining interest together. |
| Switch to a fixed rate for the remaining loan | The rate becomes fixed for the rest of the loan, subject to the lender’s board-approved policy and the terms it offers. | The offered fixed-rate terms and any switching charges against the floating-rate alternative. |
| Partly or fully prepay | You pay some or all of the outstanding loan before the end of its tenure. | How much you can pay without compromising other financial needs, and any applicable charges. |
Switching, service or administrative charges may apply, and the lender must disclose applicable charges transparently. Before choosing, ask for an updated repayment schedule for each option available to you. Compare monthly affordability, remaining tenure, total interest, applicable charges and—in a fixed-rate offer—the terms and certainty it provides. RBI lists the options; it does not identify one as best for every borrower.

Will savings-account or fixed-deposit rates go up?
A repo-rate hike may influence savings and term-deposit offers as monetary transmission works through banks, but deposit rates are deregulated. Banks have flexibility in setting them, and the timing and size of any change can vary by bank and product.
Do not assume an existing fixed deposit will earn more after a policy hike, or that a savings account’s rate will rise by 25 basis points. Check the bank’s current posted rate, the deposit’s tenure and withdrawal terms, and whether a quoted rate applies to existing balances or only to new deposits. The RBI material cited here does not establish a comparable schedule of post-October 7 rates at individual banks.

What to check before acting
- For a home loan: Find the benchmark, spread, reset date and relevant terms in your sanction letter or loan documents.
- When a reset notice arrives: Review the revised rate and repayment schedule, then ask the lender for schedules for the options it offers.
- Before switching or prepaying: Obtain the applicable charges and compare them with the remaining cost and payment schedule.
- For savings or a deposit: Check the bank’s current rate and the terms that determine whether it applies to your account or deposit.
