Priscila Barbosa was a central figure in a scheme that created and rented fraudulent gig-work accounts. The often-repeated “$10,000 a month” figure comes from WIRED’s 2024 reporting about her earnings; it is not the total DOJ attributed to her. DOJ says Barbosa admitted creating more than 2,000 fraudulent rideshare accounts and reports that she received approximately $791,000 or more through the scheme.
Who was Priscila Barbosa?
In Lauren Smiley’s July 10, 2024, WIRED feature, Barbosa is described as a Brazilian immigrant who arrived in the United States in 2018. She first drove using rented gig-work accounts, the article reports, and later created and managed accounts that other people could use.
WIRED’s reporting describes activity involving Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Instacart. It also recounts Barbosa’s personal explanations and recollections. Those details provide the feature’s narrative, but they should not all be treated as independently established findings in the criminal case.
What does “$10,000 a month” mean?
WIRED reported that Barbosa earned about $10,000 a month from the account business. It also reported a later figure of about $12,000 a month associated with Instacart accounts. Both are approximate monthly amounts attributed to Barbosa in the feature, not audited figures or DOJ calculations.

They are different measures from the total in the federal case. DOJ’s April 2022 plea announcement reported that Barbosa received over approximately $791,000 in total from account-rental payments and payments generated through the accounts. A reported monthly earning level should not be mistaken for that cumulative amount—or added to it.
How did the account scheme work?
At a high level, the scheme depended on creating accounts under identities other than the people who would ultimately use them, then renting those accounts to drivers. WIRED describes the process using other people’s identity documents and false or stolen identifiers. DOJ’s plea announcement likewise says Barbosa admitted creating fraudulent accounts using stolen identities and falsified documents.

The distinction at the heart of the story is between the person whose identity was used to obtain an account and the person who performed the work. The reporting connects that gap to the challenge of making sure the worker is the same person who passed an app’s onboarding checks. It does not establish what each company’s identity-verification safeguards are today.
Why was the group called the “Rideshare Mafia”?
“Mafia” was the name Barbosa gave a WhatsApp group for people involved in the account business, according to WIRED. It was a nickname, not an official designation that the group was a mafia or a formal organized-crime organization.

WIRED also reports that Assistant U.S. Attorney David Holcomb described Barbosa in court as the “most prolific creator” of accounts and a “central figure” in the network. The feature attributes those remarks to Holcomb; they are not presented here as a quotation from a court transcript.
What did the federal case establish?
Barbosa pleaded guilty on April 11, 2022, to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. DOJ says she admitted creating more than 2,000 fraudulent rideshare accounts. The admitted account count is a case fact, distinct from the feature’s attributed monthly earnings estimates.

The DOJ case-status page lists her sentence as three years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $20,000 fine. The plea and sentence resolved the case as to Barbosa. A 2021 DOJ charging announcement concerned allegations at the charging stage; its presumption-of-innocence language applied to defendants then accused, not as a description of the later outcome in Barbosa’s case.

The account-holder-versus-worker problem is the broader issue raised by the case: a platform may verify information during onboarding, yet still face the challenge of confirming who is actually using an account. WIRED’s feature recounts weaknesses in verification at the time and says companies claimed to have strengthened security.

That historical reporting is not a current, systematic comparison of Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Instacart, and it cannot establish the safeguards any of them use now. It supports understanding how the reported scheme exploited identity and account-use gaps—not ranking platforms or drawing conclusions about their present controls.
