The deal’s US$1.625 billion price was not Jackson’s personal payout, and published net-worth figures are estimates rather than audited accounts.
How much is Peter Jackson worth?
Published figures are estimates and vary by source and date. Forbes Australia put Jackson’s net worth at US$1.7 billion in its 2025 celebrity-billionaire list. A Forbes profile estimate surfaced with a date of October 2, 2026, put it at US$1.9 billion. Those are separate estimates, not a precise measurement or a verified personal balance sheet.

Forbes Australia also reported that Jackson netted almost US$1 billion from the Weta Digital transaction. That reported net proceeds figure is distinct from Unity’s US$1.625 billion purchase consideration: the transaction price included cash and stock and covered specified company assets, not a disclosed personal payment to Jackson.
What did Unity buy from Weta Digital?
Unity completed its acquisition on December 1, 2021. The US$1.625 billion consideration, paid in cash and stock, covered Weta Digital’s tools, pipeline, technology, and engineering talent. Unity described the acquisition as a way to bring that technology to a wider market. The figure is the announced transaction value, not a measure of Jackson’s net worth or a personal payout. (Unity’s acquisition announcement.)

The deal did not mean that the visual-effects artists simply became Unity employees under the Weta Digital name. The VFX operation continued separately as Wētā FX. In March 2022, the company said it remained a standalone business, majority owned by Jackson, creating visual effects, animation, and original content. Unity acquired the technology and engineering side; the artist-led company continued under its new name. (Wētā FX’s company statement.)
How did filmmaking build the business behind the fortune?
Jackson’s wealth story began in filmmaking, but the surrounding effects businesses matter to understanding how it grew. Wētā Workshop says co-founders Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger started the company as RT Effects in 1987. In 1993, they joined with colleagues including Jackson and Jamie Selkirk to establish a film and television effects company. The Wētā companies later contributed to Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy over seven years.

That creative ecosystem helped establish durable production capabilities and related businesses. It should not, however, be mistaken for one company with one owner: Wētā FX and Wētā Workshop are distinct entities, and the history of a shared film industry does not establish that Jackson owns every business associated with the Wētā name.
Which film businesses and assets did Jackson retain?
Wētā FX is the clearest continuing connection identified in the company’s post-sale statement: it said it was majority owned by Jackson. The New Zealand Herald has also identified Park Road Post as Jackson’s post-production business and described WingNut PM as the property arm of Jackson and Fran Walsh’s WingNut Group. These businesses and interests form part of the continuing film-related ecosystem; the available reporting does not supply a consolidated valuation for them.

Wētā Workshop is separate
Wētā Workshop is not Wētā FX. Its company history says Taylor and Rodger took sole ownership of the Workshop in 2022, making it independently owned by its co-founders. Its collectibles licensing grew from 2001, but that commercial history does not make the Workshop a Jackson holding. (Wētā Workshop’s history and ownership information.)
What role does property play in reported wealth?
A 2023 New Zealand Herald investigation reported that Jackson-connected property holdings exceeded NZ$350 million, covering film-business properties, studios, warehouses, and residences. That is a reported property figure with its own date, currency, valuation basis, and ownership scope—not a component to add to a Forbes net-worth estimate.
Rank #4
In 2025, the Herald reported further WingNut PM development plans around Miramar, near Park Road Post and Wētā FX. Those plans indicate reported property activity, not a completed development or a verified increase in Jackson’s wealth. The reporting does not establish a current, consolidated balance sheet for the properties or the businesses.
