Yes. Organizations participating in GitHub Sponsors can switch to invoice billing in their organization settings. GitHub currently requires at least USD 5,000 per invoice, payable within 30 days. Invoice billing removes the card-processing fee but not GitHub’s service-processing fee, and switching from card cancels active sponsorships.
How GitHub Sponsors invoice billing works
Invoice billing is an option for organizations sponsoring projects through GitHub Sponsors. The organization requests an invoice, pays it, then uses the resulting invoice balance to fund sponsorships. That balance can be spent over time and does not expire. It is separate from invoices for other GitHub services. GitHub’s invoice guide describes the current workflow and terms.

Invoice terms and fees
- Minimum: USD 5,000 for each invoice.
- Payment deadline: Pay within 30 days.
- Fees: GitHub describes organization sponsorship fees as up to 6%: 3% for card processing and 3% for GitHub service processing. Invoice billing avoids the card-processing fee; the 3% service-processing fee still applies.
- Agreement: The current guide says the GitHub Invoiced Sponsor Agreement lasts three years and then needs renewal.

Switch an organization to invoice billing
- Sign in to the organization and open Settings → Billing and licensing → GitHub Sponsors. Choose Switch to invoiced billing and submit the form. GitHub says organization owners receive an email link for creating an invoice when the process is complete.
- Before completing the change, review the active-sponsorship list GitHub emails to the organization. Switching cancels current sponsorships and sends cancellation email to the sponsored projects. Keep the list so you can recreate the sponsorships afterward; GitHub’s bulk sponsorship tool may help.
- In the organization’s Sponsoring → Invoices area, select Create an invoice, enter an amount of at least USD 5,000, and create it. A purchase-order number is optional.
- Pay the invoice within 30 days. GitHub says Stripe, Inc. processes these invoices and sends them to the organization’s billing email address.
- After payment, select the invoice balance as the payment method when setting up sponsorships. If offered for the organization, choose payment at the start of the next billing cycle to avoid paying the prorated amount during setup.
What changed in GitHub’s 2024 announcement?
GitHub’s June 3, 2024 changelog announced a change to where the service agreement appears: it moved from the invoice-request flow into the GitHub Sponsors Additional Terms. The announcement said existing invoice arrangements and current agreements would remain unchanged. For today’s process and agreement term, use the current invoice guide, rather than treating the historical interface update as the current workflow.
