Phishing protection works best in layers: email controls can block or flag suspicious messages, staff training and reporting can help people spot attacks, and phishing-resistant sign-in methods can make stolen passwords less useful. These 10 companies cover different parts of that job. They are a non-ranked shortlist, not interchangeable products or a guarantee against every attack.
How to choose phishing protection
Start with the email service your organization already uses. Microsoft and Google document protections built into their cloud email platforms; several other providers offer additional controls for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or both. Then compare what each product covers and how it is deployed.

- Threat coverage: Check for spoofing and impersonation, business email compromise (BEC), malicious links and attachments, QR-code attacks, and threats delivered through collaboration tools.
- Timing and response: Ask whether the service inspects messages before delivery, can identify threats after delivery, and supports removal or remediation.
- Deployment and administration: Determine whether the product uses the platform’s native controls, an API connection, mail routing, or a hybrid setup—and what configuration and ongoing work that entails.
- People and sign-ins: Decide separately whether you need awareness training, phishing simulations, a suspicious-message reporting workflow, or stronger authentication.
- Evidence and licensing: Confirm current features, plan eligibility, geography, and compatibility. Vendor feature descriptions and performance claims are not independent test results; the sources cited here do not establish comparable detection rates, false-positive rates, prices, or implementation effort.

What each company offers
Microsoft: native controls plus optional extensions
Microsoft says organizations with cloud mailboxes have built-in spoof intelligence, anti-phishing policies, and implicit email-authentication protections. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 adds configured impersonation protection, campaign views, and attack simulation training, but the available feature set depends on the service and plan. Microsoft Learn defines phishing as “an email attack that tries to steal sensitive information in messages that appear to be from legitimate or trusted senders.” (Microsoft Learn, Anti-phishing protection.)
Google: Gmail protections and administrator settings
Google Workspace administrator documentation describes default Gmail warnings and spam placement, along with configurable controls for attachments, links, external images, spoofing, and authentication. Google also promotes passkeys and FIDO2 security keys as account-protection measures. On its Workspace page, Google says more than 99.9% of spam, phishing attempts, and malware are automatically blocked in Gmail. That is a Google-published figure, not an independently established result or a promise for every organization. The same page reports an 84% increase in email-delivered infostealers in 2024 compared with the prior year; that is also Google’s figure and comparison. KnowBe4: keep email defense distinct from training
KnowBe4 describes Defend as inbound threat defense for Google, Microsoft, and Teams. Separately, its Google Workspace setup documentation covers phishing security tests, training notifications, a suspicious-message reporting button, and integration. When comparing options, establish whether you are evaluating message filtering, user awareness and simulation, or both. (KnowBe4 Defend; KnowBe4 Google Workspace Integration Setup Guide.)
Okta: make compromised passwords less decisive
Okta documents FastPass and FIDO2 WebAuthn passkeys as phishing-resistant authenticators. Authentication helps protect sign-ins if credentials are targeted, but it does not filter incoming messages. Verify supported devices, identity configuration, and application policies before choosing an approach. (Okta phishing-resistant authentication.)

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need email security, training, or both?
Email filtering and user training address different parts of the problem. Filtering aims to reduce suspicious messages reaching users; training and simulations help users recognize and report messages that get through. Microsoft documents attack simulation training, and KnowBe4 describes both awareness services and its separate Defend email product. A reporting workflow can help employees escalate suspicious mail rather than deciding alone whether it is safe.

How phishing-resistant sign-in helps
Phishing-resistant authentication is another layer, not a replacement for email protection. Google names FIDO2 security keys among its account protections, while Okta documents FastPass and FIDO2 WebAuthn passkeys as phishing-resistant methods. A FIDO2 security key may be useful where organizational sign-in systems support it, but check device and identity-provider compatibility and policy before purchasing hardware.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist process
- Record your mail setup. Note whether the organization uses Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, on-premises mail, or a hybrid environment.
- Map current coverage. Identify which native controls are enabled and which plan entitlements apply before adding another service.
- Define the gaps. Specify whether the priority is impersonation and BEC, links and attachments, QR codes, post-delivery cleanup, collaboration channels, training, reporting, or sign-in security.
- Compare deployment and operations. Ask vendors how inspection works, what integrations are required, how administrators handle alerts and remediation, and what staff must maintain.
- Validate claims and terms. Request the methodology behind performance claims, confirm licensing and regional availability, and assess false positives and implementation needs in your own environment.
