What becomes public is not necessarily the same information sent to a campaign target or petition starter.
What information can a petition platform collect?
There is no single data policy for online petitions. The fields shown on the signing form and the platform’s privacy notice determine what is collected, while the campaign can affect what is required or where a signature is sent.
- Information you enter: name, email address, location, and—in some campaigns—street address, phone number, comments, or a message to a target.
- Account and preference information: account identifiers, language preferences, petition history, survey responses, and engagement data may be covered by a platform’s policy.
- Technical data: policies may also describe IP addresses, cookies, and other technical or browsing information.
For example, Change.org’s policy describes account details, signing location, comments, broader personal-data categories, and inferred petition preferences. Avaaz lists information including postal code or country, language, IP address, comments or messages, petition history, survey responses, engagement, and technical or cookie data. Care2 describes account identifiers and IP addresses, while its petition service often requests a street address.
These are descriptions in the named services’ official materials, not a checklist that applies to every petition. A form may make some fields optional, and a campaign or regional notice may change what is requested. Change.org’s privacy policy, Avaaz’s privacy policy, and Care2’s privacy policy explain their stated practices.

Who can see your signature?
“Visible” can mean different things: displayed to visitors on a petition page, available to the person who started the petition, or delivered to the organization or official being asked to act. Those audiences may receive different fields.

Platform controls and campaign settings matter. Before submitting, inspect any visibility option beside the sign action and read the form’s explanation of who receives your information. Change.org’s signing help page explains its display options and address guidance; Avaaz’s about and privacy information describes managing information and preferences through a profile.

What do platforms use the information for?
Policies describe several purposes, but they should be attributed to the service that names them rather than assumed to apply to every petition site.
- Operating and improving the service: Change.org describes using personal information to provide and improve its services.
- Campaign communication and mobilization: Avaaz describes campaign communications, grouping or targeting audiences, analytics, and sending petition information to targets.
- Updates and recommendations: Change.org describes communications and petition-related preferences; email preferences can be managed through its controls.
- Delivering participation: A platform may transmit signatures or messages to a campaign target, with the included fields depending on the service and campaign.
Review the current policy for the platform and your region if you want details on retention, access, correction, or deletion. The reviewed services do not establish one cross-platform retention period or a single data-rights workflow.

Can you sign anonymously or hide your name?
Some services describe ways to limit public display, but anonymity is not universal and does not necessarily mean the platform or target receives no identifying information.
- Change.org: its help material says signers may use a pseudonym and choose not to display their name or comment. Check the current sign form and help page for the available controls.
- Care2 / ThePetitionSite: its policy describes an anonymity request and says a street address is withheld from public display. That does not establish that an address is never transmitted to a target.
- Avaaz: its policy says participants can manage information and preferences through a profile, but visibility and delivery depend on the campaign.
Look for the visibility setting at the point of signing rather than assuming that a platform-wide option applies to every petition.

Should you provide a full address, phone number, or sensitive comment?
Only enter details you are comfortable providing for that petition’s stated purpose. Location can help demonstrate geographic support or satisfy a campaign’s validation requirements, but requirements differ. Change.org says a signer can provide a city or town and postcode instead of a full street address; Care2 says ThePetitionSite often requires a street address.
- Check which fields are required and which are optional before entering information.
- Read the visibility note beside the sign button, including whether comments or names appear publicly.
- Check whether a fuller signature record will be sent to the target or made available to the petition starter.
- Use an available pseudonym or anonymity control if you do not want your name displayed, and leave optional sensitive details blank.
- For questions about deletion, access, or retention, consult the platform’s current privacy policy and regional notice.
A VPN or privacy accessory cannot change what a petition service does with information you submit directly to it; the relevant controls are the form, visibility settings, and service policy.
