They calculate royalty payments under licensing agreements, allocate money using eligible listening and other terms, then pay rights holders or their licensors. What an individual artist or songwriter receives depends on the rights involved and the contracts that pass the money along.
Why there is no dependable universal rate per stream
A figure such as “$X per stream” is usually an estimate: someone divides a particular royalty payment by a stream count. It can be a useful snapshot of that calculation, but it is not necessarily a price the service promises for each play. Change the market, the relevant revenue pool, the rights being counted, or the artist’s agreement, and the result may change.

Spotify explicitly says it does not pay artist royalties according to a fixed per-play or per-stream rate. Its support explanation says payments can vary with how music is streamed and with an artist’s agreements with a label or distributor. That distinction matters for financial planning: a stream count by itself cannot tell you the amount that will appear in an artist’s bank account.

For the same reason, a published average or a calculator result should be treated as an illustration with assumptions, not a quote. Unless the calculation identifies the service, time period, territory, rights category, pool, and payment recipient, it may not describe the earnings of a particular artist.

How a streaming royalty pool is allocated
Start with the relevant pool
Streaming royalties are governed by licensing agreements between services and rights holders. Spotify’s annual report says music royalties are typically calculated monthly under negotiated license agreements. Depending on those agreements, calculations may use subscription revenue, advertising revenue, user or usage measures, or a combination. The pool and its terms therefore need not be identical across services or markets.
This is why subscription prices alone do not reveal a service’s per-play payment. The pool can be affected by revenue from subscriptions and advertising, listening patterns, country, and negotiated contract terms. The available materials do not provide a single formula that would let a reader reconstruct every service’s pool from a public stream count.
Apply a stream-share allocation
Spotify describes its recording-royalty allocation using streamshare. For a given month and country, its Loud & Clear FAQ defines an artist’s or rightsholder’s share as its streams in that market divided by all streams in the same market. That share is applied to the market’s royalty pool.
In simplified form:
Eligible share of a market’s streams × that market’s royalty pool = approximate share of that pool

For example, if a hypothetical rightsholder represented 1% of the eligible streams used in a particular market’s calculation, the stream-share step would assign it approximately 1% of that market’s pool, subject to the applicable licensing and eligibility terms. This example explains the calculation only; it is not a reported payout, a guaranteed share, or an estimate of any artist’s personal income.
Streamshare is a platform-level allocation. It describes how a pool is divided among rights holders; it does not establish what a specific performer keeps. Nor should the formula be treated as a complete statement of every service’s policy: pool definitions, eligibility rules, and licenses can differ.
Why the platform’s payment is not the artist’s take-home amount
The platform pays rights holders or their licensors
Spotify says recording royalties are paid to rights holders and distributed to artists through the licensor chosen to deliver the music, typically a label or distributor. The platform generally does not have enough information to calculate what every individual artist should receive under private agreements. Spotify Support says it cannot determine an artist’s payment because it does not know the private arrangements artists and songwriters have with labels, publishers, or collecting societies.

Recording and songwriting are different rights
A recording royalty relates to the sound recording. A songwriter may also be entitled to publishing-side royalties, which are separate and can involve publishers or collection societies. A single song can therefore generate payments connected to different rights and payment routes. A statement showing one category should not automatically be read as a complete accounting of every right attached to the song.
Contracts determine what passes through
The artist’s agreement and payment arrangements affect how money moves after the platform’s allocation. Relevant terms can include a label’s share, distributor fees, publishing splits, recoupment, and payment schedules. These terms are individual: the official platform materials do not establish what any particular artist has agreed to or whether a specific balance has been recouped.
To understand a real payment, use the relevant service or licensor statements alongside the agreements that govern the recording and publishing rights. A headline stream count cannot substitute for those records.
What Spotify and Apple Music publicly establish
Both Spotify and Apple Music describe streaming royalties in terms of streamshare, but that common description does not prove they use the same pool, licenses, eligibility rules, or downstream payment arrangements. The official information available for the two services does not establish a complete, directly comparable formula for every service, market, and rights category.

For a fair comparison, ask the same questions of each service: what revenue or other measures feed the pool, how the service allocates it, what listening qualifies, which rights holders are paid, and what the artist’s own contract deducts or passes through. If those inputs are not matched, a ranking by “per-stream rate” can compare unlike numbers.

Spotify has published several figures that are informative about its own system but should not be mistaken for guaranteed artist income:
- More than $11 billion in 2025 payouts: Spotify’s January 28, 2026 newsroom post says the company paid more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025. This is an overall industry payout figure, not an artist earnings forecast.
- More than $11,000 on average for a one-in-a-million share of Spotify streams: Spotify Loud & Clear gives this as a platform-specific average example for 2025. It is not a fixed rate, a guaranteed payment to a particular artist, or a projection for another year or service.
- Roughly two-thirds of every dollar generated from music: Spotify Loud & Clear describes this as paid to artists’ and songwriters’ rights holders. The statement is Spotify’s broad characterization and refers to rights holders; it does not mean an individual artist personally receives two-thirds of subscription revenue.
- At least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months: Spotify’s recorded-music royalty-pool policy took effect in April 2024 and requires this threshold for inclusion in that calculation. It is a Spotify-specific rule for recorded music, not an industry-wide threshold and not a rule about songwriter royalties across services.
Each figure answers a different question: total industry payouts, an average tied to a particular stream-share example, a broad description of rights-holder payments, or eligibility for a specific recorded-music pool. Combining them into a single “Spotify pays X per stream” claim would overstate what they mean.

A useful estimate starts with the records that match the rights and period you want to understand. Do not begin with a generic online rate and multiply it by total plays unless you are comfortable treating the result as a rough illustration rather than a forecast.

- Identify the service and period. Use the same service and reporting window as the statement. A monthly, country-specific pool calculation should not be compared directly with an annual, multi-market total without explaining the difference.
- Identify the right and recipient. Determine whether the figure is for the sound recording or publishing, and whether it was allocated to an artist, label, distributor, publisher, or another rights holder.
- Check what listening qualifies. Confirm applicable eligibility and counting rules for that service and period. For Spotify recorded music, the 1,000-stream threshold described above applies to inclusion in its pool calculation from April 2024; do not generalize it to other services or rights.
- Read the relevant statement and agreement. Check the licensor’s reporting, deductions, splits, recoupment, and payment timing against the contract. The platform’s allocation does not reveal those downstream terms.
- Compare only like with like. When evaluating two services, align period, territory, rights category, and recipient. If the pool or contract terms are unavailable, label the result as incomplete rather than presenting it as a definitive rate comparison.
For someone planning release income, a distributor or label is part of the payment chain, not a guarantee of a particular per-play amount. Verify the actual reporting, fees, payout rules, and contract terms with the chosen licensor before relying on a projected balance.
What cannot be inferred from a stream count alone
The official information cited here does not establish a current contractual per-stream rate for every major service, territory, subscription tier, and rights category. It also does not permit an outside reader to reproduce an individual’s payment without the pool information, applicable market and eligibility terms, ownership details, contracts, and statements.
Consequently, a number found by dividing a reported payment by a stream count can help describe that particular result, but it cannot safely be carried over as a promise for another artist, service, country, or year. For personal financial decisions, the best evidence is the payment statement and the agreement that explains how the relevant rights-holder payment reaches you.
