Tim Cahill’s completed move from Millwall to Everton in 2004 was reported at about £2 million. That historical fee can be compared with today’s money using consumer-price inflation, but the available reporting does not establish an eight-figure modern transfer prediction. Those are different questions: one measures changing UK purchasing power; the other estimates what a football club might pay in a hypothetical market.
What was Tim Cahill’s transfer fee?
In July 2004, The Guardian reported that Everton had agreed a £2 million fee with Millwall for Cahill. ABC News Australia reported the same £2 million figure, equivalent at the time to A$5.16 million. UEFA described Everton’s fee as undisclosed but “believed to be around €3m” in its July 2004 report.
Taken together, the reports support £2 million as the commonly reported scale of the completed transfer, not as a published breakdown of the deal’s contractual terms. The Guardian had earlier reported that Crystal Palace agreed a £2 million fee subject to a medical and personal terms, but that proposed move did not complete. Its 8 July report said Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis described Cahill’s wish to leave: “Tim is a fine player and has been a great servant to Millwall over the past seven years but has increasingly made us aware of his desire to move on.” The subsequent Everton agreement was the transfer that went ahead.
What does “worth in today’s money” mean?
For a personal-finance comparison, “today’s money” usually means adjusting a historical amount for changes in consumer prices. This estimates how much money would have similar purchasing power for goods and services; it does not estimate a footballer’s transfer value.

The Bank of England inflation calculator describes its result as approximate and illustrative. Its methodology uses ONS CPI inflation data from 1988 onward, with earlier estimates modelled from RPI data. It uses calendar-year averages for past years and the latest CPI level for monthly calculations in the current year. The Bank says the result is a rough guide to the changing buying power of the pound for UK goods and services.
No calculated 2004-to-2026 result is established here, so a precise inflation-adjusted amount should not be inferred from the original £2 million alone. To produce a reproducible figure, specify the index, the start year and the endpoint, then use the calculator’s result with its approximation in mind.

Does the evidence support an eight-figure fee prediction?
No attributable source in the available reporting identifies who predicted an eight-figure fee for Cahill, gives a specific modern valuation, or explains a football-market method. The phrase “8-figure fee predicted” should therefore be treated as an unverified headline claim, not a sourced valuation.
A counterfactual transfer estimate would require a separate method and explicit assumptions—for example, the player’s age, position, performance, contract situation, competition and prevailing market conditions. Consumer-price inflation cannot supply that answer: it adjusts purchasing power, not a football club’s willingness to pay for a player.
