A club promoted from the Championship could generate at least £205 million in additional revenue over the following three seasons, according to a 2026 Deloitte estimate. If it stays in the Premier League after its first season, the projected uplift could exceed £365 million. Those are multi-year revenue projections—not promotion bonuses or guaranteed payments—and they are not forecasts specifically for Birmingham City or Wrexham. Deloitte’s analysis used Hull City and Middlesbrough as its examples.
What is the current estimate for promotion?
The useful benchmark is at least £205 million in added revenue across the three seasons after promotion. Deloitte’s Sports Business Group published the estimate in 2026, describing a projected increase in matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue. For a promoted club that survives its first Premier League season, Deloitte said the cumulative uplift could exceed £365 million.
These figures compare projected revenue with what the club might otherwise have earned; they do not mean the club receives that amount as a cheque on promotion day. Deloitte’s estimate is based on Hull City and Middlesbrough, so it should be treated as a current industry benchmark, not a Birmingham City or Wrexham-specific calculation.
What does the money consist of?
Broadcast distributions
Premier League central payments are not one uniform promotion prize. The League’s published explanation describes UK broadcast revenue as comprising equal shares, facility fees for matches shown live in the UK and merit payments linked to final league position. Central commercial revenue is shared equally. The exact payment therefore depends in part on televised appearances and where the club finishes. The Premier League’s explanation of its central distributions describes the mechanism; because it is older, it should not be used as a current-season payment table.

Matchday and commercial income
Promotion can also increase receipts from matchdays and commercial activity. These amounts depend on the club’s own circumstances, such as attendance and commercial agreements; the Deloitte benchmark combines these sources with broadcast revenue rather than assigning a guaranteed amount to each one.

How does survival change the estimate?
The £205 million benchmark covers the first three seasons after promotion. Staying in the Premier League beyond the first season can materially change the cumulative picture: Deloitte’s 2026 estimate says the uplift could exceed £365 million if the club survives its first Premier League campaign. The larger figure is still projected additional revenue over time, not a separate survival bonus.
Immediate relegation and survival are different financial scenarios. A club’s actual totals depend on the promotion season, central distributions, league position, televised matches, matchday growth and commercial deals. No exact amount for either Birmingham City or Wrexham is established by the cited estimate.

What payment does a promoted club owe the EFL?
Promotion also comes with a specified EFL payment. Under the 2025/26 EFL Regulations, each of the two highest-placed Championship clubs and the play-off winner must pay £165,334 to the EFL by 31 May toward the cost of parachute payments. The regulations state that promotion does not cancel this obligation. EFL Regulations.
For context, BBC Sport reported that Championship clubs received just below £11 million each in the 2024/25 season from their basic award and Premier League solidarity payments. Clubs relegated from the Premier League within the previous three years were not eligible for solidarity payments, leaving their EFL central receipts at roughly half the cited figure. Are parachute payments part of the promotion money?
No. Parachute payments are made to clubs after relegation from the Premier League, not to clubs when they are promoted. The Premier League describes them as support to help relegated clubs adjust financially, paid over three years with the amount decreasing each year. A promoted club that is later relegated may qualify under the rules then in force, but that possible future support is not promotion income. Premier League explanation of parachute payments.

No. Revenue is not the same as profit or available transfer funds: wages, operating costs and other commitments still have to be paid. From the start of 2026/27, the Premier League’s Squad Cost Ratio and Sustainability and Systemic Resilience framework replaced PSR. The League says football-related revenue in the Squad Cost Ratio includes club-generated income and distributions from the League and other competitions.
