In 2011, TheWrap reported that one person with knowledge of Depp’s deals estimated his earnings from the first four films at close to $350 million. Another person close to the franchise put the total nearer to $280 million. Disney called the higher estimate “highly inaccurate” but did not provide its own figures.

These are attributed industry estimates, not audited disclosures or a public accounting of Depp’s contracts. They should not be treated as a settled range for all five released films: the estimates cover four movies, and the sources do not establish how each amount divides among upfront pay, backend participation, or other compensation.
What is known about his pay for On Stranger Tides?
A Hawaii Department of Taxation public testimony cites Forbes reporting that Depp received $55 million in compensation for starring in the fourth film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The same passage gives the movie’s reported total budget as $410 million. That budget is the cost of the film, not Depp’s pay.

The $55 million figure is a specific reported amount for one movie, not a separately audited disclosure. It does not reconcile the two competing estimates for the first four films or establish what Depp received for every other installment.
Why is “salary” not necessarily the whole compensation?
Depp’s testimony described a contract covering compensation and merchandising for the fourth and fifth films. He also referred to pay and backend participation, with terms negotiated by his agents and lawyers. The available transcript excerpt does not disclose the contract’s amounts. As a result, a reported salary figure may not capture the complete compensation package, and the public evidence does not support a dependable itemized table of pay for all five films.

Does the $22.5 million Pirates 6 figure count?
No. In 2022 trial testimony, Depp’s manager, Jack Whigham, described a $22.5 million verbal deal for a sixth film. The Associated Press reported that Whigham acknowledged there was no written agreement and that Disney executives had been noncommittal; its account of the testimony also describes qualifications raised during cross-examination. TheWrap reported that Disney had decided by 2019 to go in another direction.
That proposed deal concerned an unreleased film, so it is not compensation received for any of the five released movies and should not be added to their reported earnings. Whigham also said, “After the op-ed it was impossible to get him a studio film,” as TheWrap reported. That was his view of Depp’s career; it does not independently establish that the op-ed caused the Pirates deal not to proceed.

The public figures answer different questions: the $280 million and near-$350 million estimates are conflicting totals for the first four films; the $55 million figure is attributed compensation for the fourth film; and the $22.5 million amount was a verbal proposal for a sixth.
