Jim Carrey was reportedly paid $20 million to play the Grinch in the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. That figure is attributed to director Ron Howard in a 2025 GamesRadar+ report; the contract itself is not public in the sources available, so its exact terms are unverified.

What the reported $20 million figure means

GamesRadar+ reported on December 15, 2025, that Howard said the studio was paying Carrey $20 million for the film. This is the strongest located support for the headline figure, but it is retrospective reporting—not a contract, payroll record, or audited accounting of Carrey’s total compensation. Read the GamesRadar+ report.

As a result, $20 million is best described as Carrey’s reported pay for the role, not as a verified net amount or a confirmed description of when and how he was paid. The available sources do not establish whether the figure was all upfront or whether his agreement included any additional participation.

Why the rights deal is not Carrey’s salary

TIME’s 2000 coverage of the adaptation rights described terms for bidders seeking the rights to Dr. Seuss material: a $5 million payment, 4% of box-office gross, 50% of merchandising revenue and music-related material, and 70% of book tie-in income. Those figures concerned the rights deal, not Carrey’s personal compensation. TIME’s account of the rights terms.

Rights-holder revenue and an actor’s compensation are separate parts of a film’s finances. The rights percentages cannot be used to calculate Carrey’s pay, and the available reporting does not show that he received any of those shares.

Could Carrey have received a share of box office?

A 2000 Los Angeles Times article explains that film profit participants could receive guaranteed upfront fees against a percentage of studio gross box-office revenue. That is useful industry context, but it does not document Carrey’s contract or prove he had a percentage deal. Read the Los Angeles Times report.

Without the contract or a reliable account of its terms, it is not possible to say whether Carrey received backend participation, how any such participation would have been calculated, or what his final earnings were after taxes and fees.
