What was Jimmy Buffett’s estate worth?
The clearest headline figure is Forbes’ estimate of Buffett’s net worth at roughly $1 billion in September 2023. Forbes attributed about $180 million to his 28% stake in Margaritaville Holdings, about $570 million to touring and recording assets, and about $140 million to planes and homes. Those are Forbes estimates, not a verified inventory of assets in the estate.
In September 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported an estimated $275 million in the marital trust. That figure refers to a trust, not necessarily Buffett’s entire estate, and comes from a later report with a different scope. The sources reviewed do not establish a final estate accounting or the total amount ultimately distributed.

Who was named to benefit from the estate?
A 2025 petition for removal of trustee describes the will and trust arrangements. Because it is a party’s court filing, its account should not be treated as a judicial ruling on the trust’s meaning or administration.

Jane Buffett
According to the petition, Buffett’s will left his wife, Jane Buffett, tangible personal property and residential real estate held for family use. The remaining assets passed through the trust structure to a marital trust created primarily for her benefit. The filing says the trust permits income and certain principal distributions to her under specified conditions. It also says Buffett’s Margaritaville interest, held through JB Beta, was among the assets transferred to the marital trust.
The couple’s three children
The petition says Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron each received a one-third share of the remaining federal estate tax exemption, valued at approximately $2 million apiece in the filing. It also describes them as remainder beneficiaries of the marital trust after Jane’s death. That does not mean each child immediately received an equal share of Buffett’s entire estate.

As described in the petition, Jane can direct how remaining principal is distributed among descendants and/or charitable organizations through her will. The children’s eventual interests therefore depend on the trust’s terms and the exercise of that power; the filing does not establish a guaranteed, fixed inheritance for each child.
What is the dispute over the trust?
In July 2025, the Associated Press reported that Jane sought to remove co-trustee Richard Mozenter, accusing him of withholding basic information and taking unreasonable fees. Mozenter had filed to remove Jane as co-trustee. These are opposing allegations in litigation, not established findings of misconduct.

The Wall Street Journal reported in September 2026 that both continued seeking the other’s removal and that a trial was expected in January. The reviewed reporting does not establish whether that anticipated trial took place, or whether a settlement or final ruling followed. Accordingly, the dispute’s ultimate outcome and any resulting changes to trust administration are not established here.
