Your Social Security income depends mainly on your covered earnings record and the age you claim. The Social Security Administration (SSA) estimated that retired workers would receive an average of $2,071 a month in January 2026, but that population average is not a forecast of your own check. For a personal estimate, review your earnings record and compare SSA estimates for different claiming ages.
How to find your own estimated benefit
Start with a my Social Security account. The SSA says it calculates benefits based on work earnings; an account shows personalized estimates using the earnings record on file and lets you compare different claiming ages. You can also adjust the assumption about future income, which matters if you expect to keep working.

Before treating an estimate as useful, check the earnings record for missing or incorrect years. The estimate depends on that history. If a year is absent or shows earnings you did not receive, the estimate may not reflect the record you expect SSA to use. Correcting a record is different from changing a future-income assumption, so review both rather than assuming the estimate automatically accounts for either.

Keep the dollar basis consistent
Calculator results may be shown in today’s dollars or in future dollars that reflect assumed inflation. Those are different ways to express an estimate, not different benefit calculations. When you compare claiming ages or change future earnings assumptions, use results stated on the same dollar basis. Otherwise, a difference may reflect how dollars are presented rather than the effect of claiming earlier or later.
Why the national average is only a reference point
SSA estimated an average retired-worker benefit payable in January 2026 of $2,071 per month. This is an average for retired workers, not a standard benefit or a minimum, and it does not show what a particular person should expect. Individual amounts vary with earnings histories and claiming ages. Use the figure to understand the scale of current benefits, not to set a retirement budget as though it were your personal estimate.
SSA also publishes maximum-benefit examples for 2026. For a worker with taxable earnings at the maximum beginning at age 22, the examples are $2,969 per month at age 62, $4,152 at full retirement age, and $5,181 at age 70. These illustrate how a long record of earnings at the taxable maximum and the claiming age affect a benefit. They are exceptional benchmarks, not typical checks or predictions for someone with a different earnings history.
The SSA’s 2026 fact sheet and benefits information put the taxable maximum at $184,500. Earnings above that amount in 2026 do not increase the benefit calculation for that year. Because the maximum and average can change, the figures here are dated to 2026 and should not be carried forward as current figures in later years without checking SSA’s updated information.

How your work record shapes the calculation
SSA generally calculates retirement benefits from a worker’s highest 35 years of covered earnings. It wage-indexes earnings from earlier years, calculates average indexed monthly earnings (AIME), and applies a formula to produce the primary insurance amount (PIA). The PIA is the basic monthly amount associated with full retirement age; adjustments for the age you claim change the amount payable.
What happens if you have fewer than 35 earning years
If your record has fewer than 35 years of earnings, the calculation can include zero years. Those zero years can lower the average used in the formula. Continuing to work may help if a later year’s covered earnings are high enough to replace a lower-earning year among the 35 used in the calculation. It does not automatically raise the benefit: the relevant question is whether a new year improves the earnings years included in the calculation.
The formula changes by eligibility year
For workers first eligible in 2026, SSA’s published formula applies 90% to the first $1,286 of AIME, 32% to the portion from $1,286 through $7,749, and 15% to any portion above $7,749. These thresholds, called bend points, are specific to the year and should not be treated as permanent values for everyone. The formula produces the PIA before the claiming-age adjustment; it is not a simple percentage of a worker’s last salary or lifetime earnings.
How claiming age changes the monthly amount
The SSA says the earliest age a person can start retirement benefits is 62. Claiming before full retirement age reduces the monthly benefit. Delaying beyond full retirement age can increase it through delayed retirement credits, but those credits stop increasing the retirement benefit at age 70. Full retirement age depends on birth year; for people born in 1960 or later, it is 67.

For a practical comparison, look at your own estimated benefit at age 62, at your full retirement age, and at age 70, using the same expected future earnings and the same dollar basis. The point is to compare your options, not to assume the national average or maximum example applies to you. If you expect to keep working, include a realistic future-earnings assumption in each scenario so the age comparison is not muddled by different work assumptions.
An earlier claim means a lower monthly amount but allows benefits to begin sooner. Waiting means giving up checks during the delay in exchange for a higher monthly amount later. No universally optimal break-even age or claiming strategy is established by these figures alone. A decision depends on personal circumstances and how the timing fits with other income needs; the fact that the monthly amount rises with delay does not, by itself, make waiting the right choice for every person.
How work before full retirement age can affect benefits
If you receive retirement benefits and have earnings before full retirement age, the retirement earnings test may cause SSA to withhold benefits when earnings exceed the applicable annual limit. For 2026, SSA lists an annual exempt amount of $24,480 for a person under full retirement age. In the calendar year a person reaches full retirement age, the limit is $65,160, and it applies only to earnings in months before full retirement age. These are 2026 limits, not permanent thresholds.

At full retirement age, earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test. SSA also says it later adjusts benefits to account for months in which benefits were withheld because of the earnings limit. A withholding therefore affects the timing of payments; it is not the same as the age-based reduction from claiming early. If you expect to work while collecting benefits, consider this rule when planning how much income will actually arrive during the year.

Why your deposit may differ from the estimate
An SSA retirement estimate is a gross benefit estimate, not necessarily the amount deposited in your bank account. Medicare Part B premiums may be deducted from benefits. Depending on a recipient’s circumstances, benefits may also be subject to income tax. The amount you ultimately have available can therefore be lower than the estimated gross benefit, even when the earnings record and claiming assumptions are accurate.
These adjustments are individual: a gross estimate alone cannot establish a person’s Part B deduction or tax liability. When building a retirement budget, keep the estimated Social Security benefit separate from other retirement income and account for the deductions and taxes that apply to your situation. Do not treat a general average or maximum example as an after-tax, after-premium amount.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to use the estimate in retirement planning
- Review your record. Sign in to your my Social Security account and check the earnings history SSA uses. Resolve errors or omissions you identify before relying on a projection.
- Choose a realistic future-income assumption. If you expect to work, enter an assumption that reflects your plans rather than simply accepting a default without review.
- Compare claiming ages. Look at your own estimates for age 62, your full retirement age, and age 70. Keep future earnings assumptions and dollar basis consistent across the scenarios.
- Separate the benefit from the deposit. Consider whether Medicare Part B premiums, potential income tax, or the earnings test could change what you receive or when you receive it.
- Revisit the estimate when assumptions change. A changed earnings plan or updated SSA estimate can alter the projection. Treat it as a planning input that can be refreshed, not a fixed promise.
This method answers the central question more reliably than trying to infer a personal check from a national average. The estimate is only as useful as the record and assumptions behind it, and the age comparison is meaningful only when you compare like with like.

Is the 2026 average of $2,071 a month what I should expect?
Not necessarily. It is SSA’s estimated average monthly retirement benefit for retired workers payable in January 2026, not a guaranteed amount, minimum, or personalized forecast. Your own benefit depends chiefly on your covered earnings record and claiming age. Check your my Social Security estimate rather than using the average to set your budget.

How does SSA calculate my retirement benefit?
SSA generally uses your highest 35 years of covered earnings, wage-indexes earlier earnings, calculates your average indexed monthly earnings (AIME), and applies a formula to determine your primary insurance amount (PIA). The PIA is associated with full retirement age; claiming before or after that age adjusts the amount payable. If you have fewer than 35 earnings years, zero years may be included.
Will working longer increase my Social Security benefit?
It may, but not automatically. If a new year of covered earnings is higher than one of the lower years in your highest 35, it may replace that year and raise the calculation. Earnings above the 2026 taxable maximum of $184,500 do not increase the benefit calculation for that year.
Is full retirement age the same as the age I stop working?
No. Full retirement age is based on birth year and is the reference age for the basic benefit amount; it does not require you to stop working. For people born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. Retirement benefits can begin as early as 62, and delayed retirement credits increase the benefit only up to age 70.
Will I receive the full estimate as a bank deposit?
Not always. The estimate is a gross benefit amount. Medicare Part B premiums may be deducted, benefits may be taxable depending on your circumstances, and earnings before full retirement age can lead to withheld benefits under the earnings test. Consider those individual factors when estimating spendable income.
The Bottom Line
There is no one Social Security amount every retiree should expect. Use your my Social Security account to review your earnings record and compare your personalized estimates at age 62, full retirement age, and 70, keeping future earnings assumptions and dollar basis consistent. Treat the 2026 average and maximums as dated reference points, then account for possible withholding, Medicare premiums, and taxes when planning take-home income.
