The right question is how much of your financial future depends on that company, directly and through funds you own, and whether you could withstand a large loss without derailing your goals. Review the exposure alongside your time horizon, risk tolerance, other holdings, employer-stock restrictions, and the costs of changing your position.
Why is one company’s stock a concentration risk?
A share of stock gives you exposure to one company’s results and to how investors value those results. Investor.gov puts the dependence plainly: “You could buy shares of a single company, but then your financial performance will depend exclusively on how that single company’s stock performs.” That statement describes the company-specific risk: even if the broader market or other investments do well, one company’s stock can fall because of developments affecting that business.

Investor.gov’s Introduction to Investing identifies factors that may affect a company’s stock price, including its management, product strength, consumer demand, economic changes, labor and supply-chain costs, and investor preferences. Those influences can interact, and a company’s prospects are not guaranteed by its past performance, reputation, or size. A concentrated position makes your portfolio more sensitive to how those factors play out for that one business.

Concentration is about dependence, not just the number of shares or the dollar value viewed in isolation. A position that seems modest beside your other investments may still matter greatly if your other assets are also tied to the same company, industry, or economic drivers. Conversely, the same stock holding can represent very different risks for two people with different financial resources, goals, and time horizons. That is why a universal “safe” percentage cannot answer the question for everyone.

How do you measure your total exposure?
Start with the whole portfolio rather than the account where the shares happen to be held. Include direct ownership of the company’s shares and look through the funds in your accounts for any indirect exposure. A mutual fund or ETF can own shares in the same company, so a fund holding may add to your exposure even when you did not buy that stock directly.
- List all investment accounts. Include accounts that serve different purposes or are held at different institutions. Use current statements or account holdings so you are assessing what you own now, not relying on memory.
- Identify direct company shares. Record the value of shares held in each account, including shares received or accumulated through an employer plan if they are part of your investments.
- Inspect fund holdings and focus. Check each fund’s published holdings and sector emphasis. A fund’s name, the fact that it is a fund, or the number of funds you own does not by itself establish that your investments are diversified.
- Look for overlap. Note whether several funds hold the same company or concentrate in the same sector. Overlapping funds can make the portfolio less varied than the number of fund positions suggests.
- Consider the rest of the portfolio. Review the mix of asset classes and the concentration within each class. A portfolio may be spread across several asset types but still depend heavily on one company; it may also hold many securities but remain concentrated in a narrow area.
This review is a practical estimate of exposure, not a prediction of how holdings will behave together. The SEC’s Investor.gov guide, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing, treats allocation among asset classes and diversification within them as related but distinct decisions. Both matter: a broad asset mix does not automatically diversify stock holdings, and owning several stocks does not automatically balance the portfolio across asset classes.
What should guide the decision?
Investor.gov identifies time horizon and risk tolerance as personal factors relevant to asset allocation. They are useful when judging an individual stock position too, but neither one makes concentration automatically appropriate. Consider both your ability to absorb a loss and your willingness to live with the uncertainty and potential volatility of the position.

Your goal and when you need the money
Ask what the portfolio is meant to fund and when you expect to use it. A goal with a nearer spending date leaves less time to recover from a setback than a goal far in the future, although a long horizon does not eliminate company-specific risk. The key is whether a severe decline in this one holding could interfere with a planned expense or other financial priority.

Your capacity and willingness to bear loss
“Can I afford a loss?” and “Could I tolerate watching this position fall?” are different questions. Capacity concerns the effect on your finances and goals; willingness concerns your comfort with the possibility of loss and uncertainty. If either answer suggests that a major decline would force a difficult choice, that is important evidence in favor of examining the concentration rather than assuming you can simply wait it out.
Your other holdings and sources of dependence
Look beyond the investment account. If the company is also your employer, your income and investments may depend on the same business. Investor.gov’s Investor Bulletin: Ten Things You Should Know About Investing warns that investing heavily in employer shares can be risky. Employer stock may also come with plan rules or restrictions that affect when and how you can trade it, so identify those before deciding what action is available.
Costs and practical constraints
Reducing a position may involve transaction costs and tax consequences. The size and nature of those consequences depend on your circumstances; the cited SEC guidance does not promise a particular tax result. Weigh the costs of acting against the risk of continuing to hold the position, and check any account or employer-plan rules that apply. A decision to hold, reduce, or change future contributions should take account of what you are actually able to do, not only what seems ideal in a simplified calculation.

| Choice | What it changes | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Continue holding the position | Keeps the current direct exposure and any indirect exposure through funds. | Whether the total portfolio is already dependent on the company; whether the goal, time horizon, and ability and willingness to bear losses support that risk; and whether employer-stock restrictions apply. |
| Sell some of the position | Reduces direct exposure if shares are sold; proceeds can be directed elsewhere or held according to the investor’s plan. | How the sale changes overall diversification, what transaction costs or tax consequences may apply, and whether there are restrictions on trading. |
| Direct new contributions elsewhere | Can gradually change the mix of future investments without selling the existing position immediately. | Whether contributions are large enough, relative to the concentrated holding, to change the portfolio meaningfully over the relevant time frame; whether the new investments provide genuine diversification rather than overlapping exposure. |
| Combine changes | Uses a sale, new contributions, or both to alter exposure over time. | The same portfolio, goal, diversification, cost, tax, and restriction questions for each step, rather than assuming that one method is always preferable. |
These options are not mutually exclusive. For example, an investor might choose to direct future contributions away from the company while separately deciding whether the current position warrants a sale. The important point is to evaluate the resulting portfolio, not merely the mechanics of an individual transaction.
How does rebalancing fit in?
Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio back toward a chosen allocation when market movements have changed its weights. Investor.gov describes several ways to do this: selling holdings that have grown overweight, adding to areas that have become underweight, or directing new contributions to underweight areas. Rebalancing is a process, not a rule that tells you what your allocation should be.
The guide illustrates the mechanics with a portfolio whose stock allocation rises from 60% to 80% after gains. Those figures are an example of a change in an allocation, not a recommended stock allocation and not a limit for one company’s shares. The lesson is that holdings can drift as prices change, so an investor who has chosen an allocation may need to review whether the portfolio still matches it.
For a single-company position, first decide what overall mix is appropriate for your goals and circumstances; then assess whether the holding has made the actual mix depart from that plan. A review can consider selling some of an overweight holding, adding to underweight areas, or using new contributions. Transaction costs and tax consequences matter when comparing these methods. Rebalancing cannot remove all investment risk, and it cannot make an unsuitable allocation suitable merely by being repeated.

Why aren’t several funds automatically diversified?
Fund count is an incomplete measure of diversification. Two or more funds may hold many of the same companies, or may focus on a similar sector or narrow slice of the market. In that case, the number of funds can overstate how different the underlying exposures are. A fund’s label is not a substitute for examining its holdings and focus.
Check diversification at two levels. Across asset classes, ask whether the portfolio is spread among the kinds of investments that fit your circumstances. Within each asset class, ask whether exposure is spread across companies and areas rather than concentrated in a few overlapping holdings. The SEC guide explains the distinction between asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing; these are connected tools, but they answer different questions.
The same look-through approach applies when deciding whether adding a fund would reduce a stock concentration. If that fund owns the company in question or has a similar narrow focus, it may not lower your dependence on the company as much as the purchase appears to. No particular fund or product is recommended here; the relevant test is what exposure its holdings would add to the portfolio.
What if the stock is your employer’s?
Employer shares deserve special attention because they can connect investment risk to employment risk. If the company runs into trouble, the stock may be affected at the same time that your job or income could be affected. This does not establish that every employee should sell employer shares, but it does mean the investment should not be assessed as though it were entirely separate from the rest of your financial life.

Read the terms of the relevant plan and find out whether trading windows, holding requirements, or other restrictions limit your choices. The SEC warning about heavy investment in employer shares is a reason to evaluate this exposure carefully, not a substitute for understanding the rules that govern your particular shares. If a restriction applies, account for it in the decision rather than assuming that an immediate sale is available.
Are single-stock leveraged or inverse ETFs a way to diversify?
No. A single-stock leveraged or inverse ETF is a distinct and complex exposure to one company’s stock, not a diversification solution. SEC staff addressed these products in a statement dated July 8, 2022, warning that they can amplify volatility and risk. The statement also warns that holding a leveraged or inverse product for longer than a day can produce performance that differs significantly from its stated daily objective.
That daily objective is important: a product designed to pursue a daily result should not be assumed to deliver the same multiple or inverse result over a longer holding period. The 2022 statement is SEC staff guidance, not a binding rule. Its warning is still directly relevant to the portfolio question: adding a leveraged or inverse product tied to one stock does not spread company-specific risk across businesses or asset classes.

- Calculate the picture you actually have. Combine direct shares with exposure found inside funds and review all relevant accounts.
- Write down the goal and time frame. Identify when the money may be needed and what a substantial loss could mean for that goal.
- Assess both forms of risk tolerance. Consider the financial impact you could bear and your comfort with the uncertainty of a concentrated position.
- Review diversification and overlap. Check fund holdings, sector focus, and exposure across asset classes instead of counting investment products.
- Check constraints and consequences. Identify employer-plan restrictions, transaction costs, and potential tax consequences before choosing an action.
- Compare the resulting portfolios. Consider continued holding, partial reduction, redirecting future contributions, or a combination, and judge each by how it changes the entire portfolio.
Keep the assessment tied to your circumstances. A position can grow as prices rise, and an allocation that once fit a plan may no longer reflect it. Reviewing the portfolio can reveal that the current exposure is intentional and tolerable, or that it has become a larger dependence than you want. The evidence does not establish a universal company-stock cap; the decision rests on the portfolio’s actual exposures, the investor’s goals and risk capacity, and the costs and constraints of changing it.
