The move never happened. Ipswich and Middlesbrough were reported to have agreed a transfer fee in July 2025, but Hackney had not decided whether to move; Sky Sports later reported that he joined Everton in July 2026.
Could Hackney’s Ipswich pay rise be calculated?
No. To calculate an increase, you would need comparable salary figures—his Middlesbrough pay and the salary Ipswich offered or discussed. The reports about the negotiations do not provide either figure, so any precise pay-rise amount or percentage would be speculation.
TWTD reported on 29 July 2025 that Ipswich and Middlesbrough had agreed a transfer fee below £20 million, with Middlesbrough ultimately due £15 million after add-ons. It also reported that Hackney was still weighing his future and that the clubs had spoken to him about terms, without giving a salary figure. TWTD’s report on the Ipswich talks described a reported fee agreement, not a completed transfer or a disclosed contract.
What happened to the Ipswich move?
The July 2025 reporting said Hackney had not yet decided whether to join Ipswich. A June 2026 report by MiddlesbroughFCNews.co.uk later said he turned Ipswich down and that the clubs had agreed a £20 million package. That outlet describes itself as independent and unaffiliated with Middlesbrough, so the rejection detail should be treated as a secondary report rather than an official club confirmation. Sky Sports reported that Everton signed Hackney from Middlesbrough on 2 July 2026 on a five-year contract. The report put the transfer fee at £24 million, comprising £16.5 million up front and potential add-ons, but did not disclose his wages. Sky Sports’ report on the Everton signing
Transfer fees are not player salaries
The figures reported for Ipswich and Everton describe payments between clubs for a transfer. They are not money paid to Hackney as wages, and they cannot be used to work out a salary increase.

Did Hayden Hackney turn down Ipswich?
A Middlesbrough-focused fan site reported in June 2026 that he turned the move down, but the stronger contemporaneous detail from TWTD is that in July 2025 he was still considering his future. Sky Sports subsequently reported his Everton move. Taken together, the reports establish that Ipswich negotiations were reported and that Hackney later joined Everton; they do not establish a confirmed salary offer or an exact wage comparison.
Everton manager David Moyes welcomed the signing, telling Sky Sports: “Hayden is a promising young player who we’ve been tracking for some time, and I’m looking forward to working with him.” Sky Sports quoted Moyes in its 2 July 2026 report.
