Why is the total disputed?
In an August 2023 petition, Oher alleged that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy presented a conservatorship as an adoption and sought an accounting and payment of money he said he was owed. Those were allegations in his petition, not findings that establish a final financial accounting.
The Tuohys denied wrongdoing. Their lawyers said proceeds from The Blind Side were divided among five people, including Oher, and estimated each person’s share at about $100,000. That response is the source of the per-person estimate; it does not independently verify the family’s total receipts.

Sean Tuohy was also reported as saying, “We didn’t make any money off the movie.” That is his attributed statement, not a confirmed accounting. The later report of a court filing describing payments to family members is relevant context, but it does not by itself settle what each person ultimately earned.
What did the conservatorship ruling decide?
A judge terminated the conservatorship in September 2023. The Associated Press reported at the time that the financial dispute would continue. Ending the conservatorship did not determine how much the family earned or what Oher was owed.

Did the Tuohys receive money from Oher’s NFL career?
The reporting cited here does not establish that the Tuohys received a share of Oher’s NFL salary. The quantified amounts concern proceeds associated with The Blind Side, not an accounting of his football contracts or the family’s overall finances. It is therefore more accurate to discuss story-related proceeds than to characterize the reported numbers as earnings from his NFL career.

Michael Lewis published The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game in 2006, and the film followed in 2009. Their connection to the reported proceeds explains why they feature in the dispute, but the book’s publication and the film’s release do not prove how money was allocated. Readers interested in the story’s source material can look to Lewis’s book; it should not be treated as evidence of the parties’ financial accounting.
