2026 Massachusetts fishing license prices
Massachusetts has separate credentials for freshwater and saltwater fishing. For freshwater, the fee depends on residency and license duration. The following are the state’s listed license fees; applicable stamps and transaction charges can increase the amount paid.

These are the 2026 fees listed by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife in its license fee schedule.
Freshwater and saltwater licenses are different
Freshwater fishing
The freshwater license applies to inland fishing. Massachusetts requires a license starting at age 15, subject to exemptions and free-license eligibility described below.

Saltwater fishing
Marine recreational fishing requires a separate saltwater permit. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries charges $10 for anglers under 60; anglers 60 and older can obtain it free. The permit is required even when the fee is $0, does not vary by residency, and expires December 31. Check the state’s saltwater permit page for its coverage and exceptions. A freshwater license does not replace this permit, or vice versa.
Stamps and purchase fees can change the total
For freshwater licenses, Massachusetts adds a $5 Wildlands Conservation Stamp to the first resident license purchased in a year and to all nonresident licenses. Other charges depend on how you buy:

The saltwater permit has a separate online charge: the state says a free permit obtained through its described online process incurs $2.89, comprising $2.75 administrative handling and a $0.14 convenience fee. Who qualifies for a free freshwater license?
- People under 15 do not need a freshwater fishing license.
- Massachusetts residents ages 15–17 receive a free freshwater license.
- Massachusetts residents age 70 and older receive a free freshwater license.
- The state also provides free licenses for certain disabled anglers; eligibility and application requirements apply, and some first-time applicants need pre-approval or must purchase offline.
People age 15 or older who do not qualify for an exemption or free license need a freshwater license. Consult the state’s fee and license information for disability-related eligibility and any application conditions.

Validity and where to buy
Freshwater licenses are valid from the purchase date through the end of that calendar year, rather than for 12 months from purchase. The state’s freshwater license purchase page directs buyers to MassFishHunt and says licenses can be displayed on a smartphone. Saltwater permits also expire on December 31 and must be obtained again for a new year.
Freshwater license revenue goes to the Inland Fish and Game Fund for MassWildlife programs and services. Saltwater permit revenue goes to the Marine Recreational Fisheries Development Fund, administered by the Division of Marine Fisheries.
