Who needs a Kansas fishing license?
In general, Kansas residents ages 16 through 74 need a resident fishing license, and nonresidents age 16 and older need a nonresident license, unless an exemption applies. Nonresident children age 15 and younger do not need a fishing license, according to KDWP’s License and Regulation Questions FAQ. Kansas residents age 75 or older are not required to buy a hunting or fishing license; other permits, tags, stamps, or fees may still apply.

Residency and special cases
KDWP generally defines a Kansas resident for licensing purposes as someone who has maintained a permanent abode in Kansas for the 60 days immediately before purchase. A nonresident active-duty service member stationed in Kansas may buy a resident fishing license with evidence of active-duty status. Other exemptions and special cases can have different rules; check KDWP’s requirements or ask licensing staff if your circumstances are not covered by the general rule.
The agency FAQ offers a practical reminder for adults fishing with children: “If you are going to take a child fishing, buy a license for yourself. Invariably, you will end up with the pole in your hand.”

Not yet, as of October 8, 2026. KDWP says Senate Bill 364 restored authority to offer a discounted 10-year senior license and expanded eligibility for children’s lifetime licenses, but both options must complete the standard regulatory process. The department says November 2026 is the earliest they could become available. Check the current KDWP fee page before purchase rather than assuming these options are on sale.
