The clearest recent figure is an individual recollection, not an official pay scale: Pete Davidson said his first Saturday Night Live paycheck worked out to “like three grand an episode.” That December 2024 anecdote does not establish what every cast member earns or what the current rate is.
How much does an SNL cast member make per episode?
In a December 2024 New York Magazine first-paycheck feature, Pete Davidson recalled being paid “like three grand an episode.” Contemporaneous coverage relayed his comment. It is useful as a recent, named cast member’s recollection, but it is not an NBC announcement, a disclosed contract, or a guaranteed rate for the ensemble. Us Weekly’s coverage reported the quote: “It’s like three grand an episode, so I think I got dinner.”
Is there an official SNL salary scale?
Public reporting does not establish a current official NBC salary schedule, a universal starting rate, or a confirmed maximum for veteran cast members. Figures repeated online for starting, experienced, or highest-paid performers should be treated as estimates unless they are tied to a named person’s direct disclosure or a reliable contract document. A 2026 roundup also describes widely circulated salary figures as unconfirmed estimates. That roundup is not confirmation of a pay ladder.
Why do reported SNL pay figures differ?
- Different contract eras: A reported contract page for Kevin Nealon concerns his own earlier seasons, not today’s cast. It shows why a historical individual contract cannot establish a current rate. The historical contract report is specific to Nealon.
- Different kinds of evidence: Davidson’s number is a personal recollection; many other circulating figures are estimates without a disclosed contract or direct statement behind them.
- Different ways of counting pay: A per-episode figure is not automatically a season salary. Episode counts vary, and public sources do not establish that every performer has identical terms or appears in every episode.
Can you estimate an SNL cast member’s season pay?
You can do illustrative arithmetic, but the result is not a verified salary. Multiplying Davidson’s recalled amount by a chosen number of episodes would assume that the per-episode figure applies throughout that season and that the performer is paid for every episode counted. Neither assumption is established for the cast generally. A season total also should not be mistaken for an annual salary, since it does not account for other work or establish how an individual contract is structured.

What has the show’s pay tradeoff meant to cast members?
In a December 2024 Variety interview, Kenan Thompson declined to give a specific salary figure and described the job as being “more so about having the job than getting paid for the job,” as quoted by Us Weekly. His comment speaks to the perceived value of the opportunity, not to a disclosed compensation package. Us Weekly reported Thompson’s remarks.

- Check whether the figure names a performer and comes from that person or a documented contract.
- Look at the year and contract era; older figures are not current rates.
- Distinguish per-episode pay from a season total or broader annual income.
- Do not treat estimates for a “starting,” “veteran,” or “top” salary as confirmed merely because they are repeated.
Public reporting does not quantify performers’ total income from film, television, touring, production, or other work, so an SNL pay estimate should not be presented as a cast member’s overall earnings.
