The CLASSIC.COM Market Benchmark (CMB) displayed for the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS market was $86,056 when the page was accessed on October 5, 2026. That is a broad market reference—not an appraisal of any one car. Recent sales of specific LS6 examples ranged from $220,000 to $434,500, showing why the engine, condition, originality, and documentation matter before estimating a particular Chevelle’s value.
What recent 1970 Chevelle SS sales show
CLASSIC.COM’s market page records the following 2026 auction sales of cars identified as SS-454/LS6 models. These are completed sales of particular cars, not prices that every 1970 SS can command.
| Sale date | Recorded sale price | Vehicle identified in listing |
|---|---|---|
| January 16, 2026 | $335,500 | 1970 Chevelle SS-454/LS6 |
| April 2, 2026 | $220,000 | 1970 Chevelle SS-454/LS6 |

These figures and the $86,056 benchmark were displayed on CLASSIC.COM when accessed on October 5, 2026; the benchmark’s observation date is not stated as a publication date. Check the live CLASSIC.COM 1970 Chevelle market page for current data. A seller’s asking price or an unsold high bid is not equivalent to a completed sale.
Why “1970 Chevelle SS” covers different cars
SS 396 (actually a 402)
Hagerty’s January 2, 2025 vehicle valuation report explains that the SS 396 designation did not indicate a 396-cubic-inch engine: the 1970 SS 396 used a 402-cubic-inch engine, rated at either 350 or 375 horsepower.

- Approximately 7-1/2" Long
- Scaled replicas of cars and trucks
- Die-cast metal body with plastic details
- Opening doors on all- some with opening hoods and trunks
- Detailed chassis
SS 454 LS5 and LS6
The SS 454 was available with the LS5, rated at 360 hp, or the higher-output LS6, rated at 450 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Those are materially different configurations, so an LS6 auction result is not a sound direct comparison for an SS 396 or LS5 car. See Hagerty’s 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle valuation report and model overview.
Appearance is not proof of equipment
Hood pins, racing stripes, and a functional cowl-induction hood were part of the ZL2 hood option, not standard equipment on either SS version. An appearance package or feature alone therefore does not establish which engine a car has; verify the engine and supporting documentation.

How to estimate a particular car responsibly
Start with comparable completed sales, then narrow the comparison to cars with as many of the same defining characteristics as possible.
- Confirm the engine package. Establish whether the car is an SS 396/402, LS5 454, or LS6 454, and verify engine identity and documentation rather than relying on badges or appearance.
- Match body style and transmission. Compare coupes with coupes and convertibles with convertibles where possible, and account for transmission differences. The market page includes different configurations.
- Assess condition and originality. CLASSIC.COM notes that condition affects an individual car’s value. Hagerty also identifies originality and maintenance history as relevant considerations.
- Review options, provenance, and history. Desirable options and documented provenance can affect value; accident records, title problems, or gaps in history can weigh against it.
- Use completed sales, not asking prices. Separate a recorded transaction from a current listing or an auction bid that did not result in a sale.
The available figures do not establish a universal adjustment formula for translating an LS6 sale into a value for a car with a different engine, condition, or history. Hagerty’s detailed model-specific valuation pages may require login, and no condition-tier price is established here. A responsible estimate for an individual car requires its identity, condition, documentation, and closely matched transactions.
