A 1965 Ford Mustang can be worth very different amounts depending on its body style, engine, condition and history. As a specific U.S.-dollar reference, Hagerty’s July 2026 guide lists $16,700 to $21,667 for a 1965 convertible with a 170-cubic-inch, 101-horsepower six-cylinder engine in #3 Good condition. Hagerty separately gives $34,860 as the average-spec Mustang’s value in good condition—an estimate with a different scope, not a price for that same configuration.
How much is a 1965 Ford Mustang worth?
There is no single current value for every 1965 Mustang. Hagerty’s July 2026 valuation guide gives a concrete benchmark for one configuration, while its general FAQ offers a broader average-spec figure. Both are U.S.-dollar guide values, not guaranteed offers for a particular car.
| Reference | Amount | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Hagerty valuation guide, July 2026 | $16,700–$21,667 | A 1965 convertible with a 170-cubic-inch, 101-horsepower six-cylinder engine in #3 Good condition. |
| Hagerty FAQ, page accessed October 2026 | $34,860 | An average-spec 1965 Mustang in good condition; it is not tied to the specific convertible configuration above. |
These figures should not be averaged together or treated as interchangeable. The car’s exact specification and condition determine which comparisons are useful.
What changes a 1965 Mustang’s value?
Hagerty identifies condition, mileage, options and history as value factors. Details that can support a higher valuation include originality, excellent condition, a recent restoration, low mileage, provenance, desirable options and maintenance records. Extensive maintenance needs, substantial departures from original configuration, accident history or title problems can weigh against value.

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.

- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
- Body style and drivetrain: Establish whether it is a convertible, fastback or another body style, and record the engine and transmission.
- Condition and restoration: A guide’s condition category is not a substitute for examining the actual car. Document repair needs and restoration quality.
- Originality and options: Record modifications, original components and equipment that may affect desirability.
- History and paperwork: Mileage, maintenance records, provenance, title status and accident history all help explain a price.
How to estimate a specific car’s market value
- Identify the car precisely. Record body style, engine, transmission, options and any modifications.
- Assess its condition and documentation. Note restoration work, maintenance needs, mileage, title status and available history.
- Use a guide as a starting point. Match the guide’s configuration and condition category as closely as possible rather than selecting a headline figure alone.
- Check recent completed sales. Compare cars with the same body style and broadly similar configuration and condition. Account for sale date and venue; a result is evidence of one transaction, not a promise of what another car will bring.
What recent sale results show—and what they do not
Hagerty’s valuation page reports several 1965 Mustang auction results that illustrate how far prices can vary across cars. The reported sales include:
- A convertible sold for $20,720 on September 2, 2026.
- A convertible sold for $9,030 on June 20, 2026.
- A fastback sold for $67,200 on September 15, 2026.
- A fastback sold for $47,250 on September 13, 2026.
These are individual U.S. sales reported by Hagerty, not interchangeable comparables. The higher fastback results should not be read as representative of an ordinary Mustang, and none establishes a guaranteed local sale price. Hagerty also reports 1,045 vehicles sold, $73.1 million in total sales volume and a $69,900 average sale price in its displayed 12-month market data for 1965–1973 Ford Mustangs collectively; those figures are not specific to 1965 cars.

Does a market estimate determine insurance coverage?
No. A market guide is not automatically the amount an insurer will pay under a policy. Hagerty says the Guaranteed Value shown on a policy’s declarations page is the covered amount in a claim. Check the policy documents and insurer’s terms rather than assuming a valuation-guide figure sets coverage.
