The “nearly $1 trillion” claim comes from an extrapolation in R. Vaidyanathan’s book, not an official Swiss statistic. Its estimate combines old claims and assumptions about Indian ownership with assets beyond Swiss-bank deposits.
Where the nearly $1 trillion claim comes from
A Scroll.in excerpt published on 8 November 2023 from R. Vaidyanathan’s Black Money and Tax Havens says estimates of black money from India range from $181 billion to $1.8 trillion. The excerpt then makes a separate argument about Swiss banks and offshore wealth. Those figures are reported by the excerpt; the underlying studies behind the range are not established here.
The excerpt attributes an older claim to Konrad Hummler, then chairman of the Swiss Private Bankers Association. According to the excerpt, Hummler said in an August 2009 issue of Swiss Review that nearly one trillion out of 2.8 trillion of Swiss money was black. The excerpt then asserts that more than half was owned by Indians and infers $700–800 billion for 2008–09. It adds other offshore financial products, funds allegedly accumulated through commissions or trade mispricing, and valuables said to be held in Swiss vaults before concluding that the amount “could easily be $1 trillion.”
That chain is Vaidyanathan’s extrapolation. The excerpt does not provide transparent calculations or primary documentation for the Hummler attribution, the asserted Indian share, or a present-day total. The original 2009 publication is not available to verify the attribution independently. Read the Scroll.in excerpt.

Why this is not a Swiss-bank deposit total
The book excerpt’s conclusion is broader than a measured balance of Indian customer deposits in Swiss banks. It moves from a claim about Swiss money to an assumed Indian share, then includes other offshore products and valuables. Those categories are not interchangeable: wealth held in Switzerland, deposits booked by Swiss banks, and Indian-owned assets held worldwide describe different things.
Ownership and legality are also separate questions. A banking statistic may report a position associated with a customer’s residence, but it does not by itself establish the ultimate beneficial owner or whether the funds were legally acquired and declared. Nor does the presence of Indian money in a Swiss account make it “black money.”

What official Swiss statistics establish
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) announced its 2024 annual banking statistics on 19 June 2025 and directs readers to its data portal. The announcement confirms that an official annual statistical series exists, but it does not show an India-specific figure. It therefore does not verify Vaidyanathan’s near-$1-trillion estimate or provide a comparable current total for illicit Indian wealth in Switzerland. See the SNB notice for Annual banking statistics, 2024.
To compare an official statistic with the book’s estimate, a reader would need to know the year covered, whether it counts deposits or broader assets, whether the geography is Switzerland or worldwide, whether ownership is based on customer residence or beneficial ownership, and whether the measure says anything about legality. The cited excerpt and SNB notice do not provide a current like-for-like comparison.
