Why the reported £40 million needs a qualification
The £40 million figure belongs to reporting about the earlier proposal. It should not be treated as the amount of the new offer: Bale’s July announcement did not give a price, and the cited reports do not establish that the later proposal matched the earlier one.
There was also a difference in how the initial approach was described at different points in the chronology. On 25 June 2025, the Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust said its understanding from the club was that no formal bid had been put before the board at the stage it checked, while a notice of intention to make an offer had gone directly to Tan. What happened after Bale confirmed a new offer?
Bale told Front Office Sports, “We have a brand-new offer on the table.” He also said, “We think it’s very fair, if not more than fair, and it’s something we hope the current owners will take serious.” BBC Sport reported his stated goal if the offer were accepted: “We’d love them to accept so we can take full control and get on with what we want to do and create Cardiff into a club that we know it can be.” These remarks describe his position, not an accepted sale or a disclosed price. The latest located update is a Front Office Sports report published on 15 June 2026. It said a source familiar with the matter described the latest bid as still on the table as of April 2026, with no feedback from Tan.
