There is no verified public figure for how much Mariah Carey personally earns each Christmas from “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Published estimates range from a December-only estimate of $600,000–$1.2 million for Carey to annual song-earnings estimates of several million dollars—but they measure different things, and none is a confirmed yearly paycheck.
What the estimates say
The best-known estimates cannot be treated as a single agreed figure. Some describe revenue generated by the song; others estimate royalties or Carey’s personal share. The years and time periods also differ.

| Estimate | What it measures | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About $3.4 million per year; $103 million over 30 years | Estimated song-generated earnings, not Carey’s personal receipts | Manatt in 2024, reporting entertainment lawyer Bromley’s estimate. Manatt also reports Bromley’s estimate of $9.8 million in royalties from two billion global Spotify streams. |
| $4.5 million in master-recording revenue; $1.66 million in global revenue and publishing royalties; $6.16 million combined | Billboard’s estimates for 2021, as summarized by Sporting News | Sporting News in 2024 says Billboard estimated Carey’s master revenue at $1.55 million, but her recording contract split and the co-writers’ publishing division were not known. |
| $2.5 million–$3 million annually | Estimated annual royalties for Carey | Billboard Brasil, November 29, 2025, attributing this estimate to Forbes and The Economist; it is not presented as an independently audited figure. |
| $600,000–$1.2 million each December; $2 million–$4 million in total annual royalties | Publication estimates of Carey’s December royalties and the song’s annual royalties, respectively | Celebrity Net Worth, December 3, 2025. These are estimates, not verified payout records. |
| More than $60 million by 2017 | Historical cumulative royalties attributed to the song | The Economist estimate, repeated in Billboard Brasil’s 2025 report and Sporting News. This is a historical figure, not a current cumulative total. |
For the narrow question of what Carey may personally receive in December, Celebrity Net Worth’s $600,000–$1.2 million estimate is the most directly framed answer among these figures. It remains a third-party estimate. The larger numbers should not be substituted for it: they may cover the song’s total earnings, different royalty streams, or a different period.
Why the numbers differ
The song earns from two distinct copyrights
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” is both a composition and a sound recording. The composition can generate publishing royalties; use of the recording can generate master-recording revenue. The two streams have different rights holders and payment arrangements.
#1 Best Overall
Manatt says Carey holds copyrights in both the composition and the sound recording, so she can receive revenue from both sides as well as from public performances. But the amount that reaches her depends on the applicable rights and contract shares. The same Manatt article says an artist’s share of recording revenue can vary broadly with label terms. Its general observation that recording revenue typically generates four to five times songwriting revenue is not a guaranteed ratio for this song or any particular year.
Song revenue is not the same as Carey’s income
A song’s generated earnings may be divided among the recording and publishing sides, and then among the people or companies entitled to those shares. Carey co-wrote the song with Walter Afanasieff, so publishing income is not automatically hers alone. The public estimates do not establish every label, publisher, co-writer, or contract split.

- Merry Christmas Deluxe Anniversary Edition
- Product type: ABIS MUSIC
- Brand: COLUMBIA/LEGACY
That distinction matters especially for the 2021 figures summarized by Sporting News: the $4.5 million master estimate and $1.66 million global revenue-and-publishing estimate describe different categories, while the reported $1.55 million attributed to Carey is an estimate of her master revenue—not a verified total of her personal income from the song.
Annual, December-only, and lifetime figures answer different questions
A December estimate is not interchangeable with a full-year royalty estimate. Nor can a one-year amount be compared directly with a cumulative total spanning decades. The Economist’s estimate of more than $60 million by 2017 is historical; it does not establish the song’s current lifetime earnings.

Why the song keeps earning each holiday season
Carey and Afanasieff wrote the song in the summer of 1994, according to Spotify’s 2018 feature. Its recurring seasonal popularity brings it back to listeners, playlists, radio, and public performance each year. Spotify called it its most-streamed holiday song at the time; later, Axios reported that it became the first holiday song to pass two billion Spotify streams on December 13, 2024.
That milestone demonstrates reach, not Carey’s royalty rate. Streaming payouts are not a simple fixed amount per stream that can be multiplied by a public counter to calculate an artist’s personal income. Rights ownership, the recording and publishing arrangements, and platform-level accounting all affect what is paid and to whom.

What can—and cannot—be said about her Christmas income
- Reasonable estimate: Celebrity Net Worth estimated Carey’s December royalties at $600,000–$1.2 million in December 2025.
- Broader song-earnings estimate: Manatt reported Bromley’s estimate of about $3.4 million in annual earnings generated by the song.
- Not established publicly: Carey’s exact personal payout for the latest Christmas season, her full contractual splits, and a verified 2026 total.
Carey’s Christmas-related income may include more than this one song, but the estimates above concern “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and should not be presented as a complete accounting of all her holiday income.
