That is not the trip’s final price: aircraft positioning, crew arrangements, airport charges, taxes and requested services can add to the quote. Treat published rates as estimates, and compare written totals for your exact itinerary rather than choosing by the hourly figure.
What does it cost to rent a private jet?
There is no single reliable price for a private-jet charter. Aircraft class and flight time matter, but so do the aircraft’s location before pickup, the return or waiting arrangement, and what the quote includes. An indicative 2026 U.S. rate guide from UpLeg, published September 15 and updated October 3, reports these typical retail aircraft-only rates gathered from public rate cards:

These are market estimates, not binding rates for a specific aircraft, date or route. They describe the aircraft component, not a universal all-in trip price. UpLeg’s route examples multiply estimated flight time by the class rate, then note that positioning, crew, fees and taxes can change the quote. Another published guide reports substantially different category ranges, underscoring that the rate depends on aircraft, market, date and quote basis. There is no independent market-wide dataset or regulator-published average charter price established by these sources.
Why the hourly rate is not the final bill
Charter quotes can combine flight time with costs tied to the aircraft’s schedule, the airports and the services requested. A lower headline rate may leave more of those items outside the quoted aircraft price.

Aircraft time and minimums
Ask how the operator measures billable time and whether a minimum number of hours applies. PilotPrivate describes its billing measure as block time, which includes taxi time; other quote terms should be confirmed directly.
Positioning and ferry flights
If the aircraft must fly empty to reach the pickup airport or reposition after dropping passengers off, that time may be billed. The method varies by operator. For example, an Executive Fliteways GSA price list adds empty-leg time to or from its Islip base at the applicable hourly rate.

Crew, waiting time and overnights
A trip that keeps an aircraft and crew away from base can involve waiting time, duty-limit arrangements, hotel stays, per diem or multi-day aircraft costs. These can matter especially when there is a long gap between outbound and return flights.
Airport, fuel and service charges
Depending on the itinerary and quote terms, additional charges may include landing, ramp, handling, parking, de-icing, international permissions or handling, and fuel surcharges. Catering, ground transportation, connectivity and other requested services may also be billed separately.

Taxes and segment fees
Tax treatment depends on the route and jurisdiction. PilotPrivate describes a 7.5% U.S. federal excise tax on domestic charter legs; the Executive Fliteways GSA price list also states a 7.5% FET under its listed terms, with specified exclusions. These examples do not establish that the same tax applies to every itinerary or quote. Ask the provider which taxes and segment fees apply to your trip.

- Match the itinerary and aircraft needs. Give providers the same city pair and dates, passenger and baggage requirements, and any range or aircraft-capability needs. Make sure each quote describes a comparable aircraft class and trip shape.
- Check time and positioning assumptions. Ask how billable time is measured, whether minimum hours apply, where the aircraft will start, and whether either ferry leg is included. Confirm how waiting time, parking and overnight crew arrangements are handled.
- Review inclusions and pass-throughs. Check whether the total includes fuel surcharge, airport and handling charges, taxes, requested services and any other costs that may be passed through. Ask whether a surcharge is fixed or can change.
- Confirm the terms in writing. Request the total for the whole aircraft, the quote’s validity period, and the change and cancellation terms. Clarify what could make the final amount differ from the quote.
A quote should make clear what you agree to pay for the whole aircraft before anything is paid. UpLeg founder Ali Merchant describes the calculation this way: “A quote multiplies the hours your trip takes by the rate, then adds crew, positioning, fees and taxes into one total for the whole aircraft, which is the number you agree to before anything is paid.”
Are empty-leg flights cheaper?
An empty leg is a scheduled flight an aircraft makes without the passengers who chartered the preceding or following trip. It may be offered below a standard charter price, but the route, date and availability are constrained by the aircraft’s schedule, so it is not a flexible substitute for a dedicated charter.
