There is no single current NASA price per astronaut, and NASA’s contract totals are not the price of a personal ticket. NASA buys crew transportation and mission services from commercial providers; private ISS missions are privately funded and reimburse NASA for support at negotiated, mission-specific rates. The official figures show what those arrangements cost, but do not establish what an individual currently pays for an orbital or suborbital flight.
What “the cost to go to space” can mean
Three different amounts are often conflated: NASA’s contracts to transport professional astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), NASA’s charges for supporting privately funded ISS missions, and the retail fare an individual pays a company for a seat. They have different payers, scopes and pricing methods. NASA’s public contract and reimbursement figures answer the first two questions, not the third.
What NASA pays for professional crew transportation
NASA’s Commercial Crew Program buys crew transportation as a service under fixed-price arrangements. The contract amounts cover program and mission obligations, not a bare seat sold to an individual. NASA’s program overview describes the service model at NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.
In its June 2026 summary, NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) recounts original 2014 contract awards of $4.2 billion for Boeing and $2.6 billion for SpaceX. By the time of that summary, the combined contract values had exceeded $8 billion; the total excludes several billion dollars NASA and the companies invested in additional resources. These are program-contract figures, not amounts charged to a passenger. See the NASA OIG June 2026 update.

A recent SpaceX mission bundle
On September 18, 2026, NASA priced a modification for three additional SpaceX crew missions at $946 million. NASA says the amount includes ground, launch, in-orbit, and return and recovery operations; cargo transportation for each mission; and lifeboat capability while the spacecraft is docked to the ISS. It is a bundled mission-services figure, not the price of three seats. NASA’s announcement of the SpaceX contract modification describes the scope.
Where the familiar $55 million and $90 million seat figures come from
The often repeated estimates of approximately $55 million per SpaceX seat and $90 million per Boeing seat are historical averages calculated by NASA OIG in a 2020 audit—not current fares or exact costs. The OIG used publicly available contract information, subtracted development, test-flight and special-study costs, then divided the remaining mission cost by 24 assumed seats across six flights. The report explicitly characterizes its results as averages. Read the 2020 NASA OIG audit for its method and qualifications.

A NASA podcast transcript also gives historical comparisons from the transition to Commercial Crew: Phil McAlister described the latest Soyuz seat purchase at that time as about $90 million per seat and recalled initial Commercial Crew contract assumptions averaging $58 million per seat. Those figures refer to the period being discussed, not today’s ticket market. The comparison appears in the NASA podcast transcript.
What private ISS missions pay NASA for
A private astronaut mission is a privately funded commercial flight to the ISS. The provider organizes and funds the mission; the visiting crew can undertake approved commercial activities such as science and outreach. NASA’s FAQ says the provider funds mission-specific services, with costs that vary according to the requested support. Possible services include crew time, cargo launch and return, stowage, life support, food and other crew consumables, power, camera and video use, and data downlink. NASA explains these arrangements in its private astronaut mission FAQ.

NASA’s commercial and marketing pricing policy says the private-astronaut pricing table is representative: final reimbursable values may change with the mission concept and are negotiated at mission award or agreement finalization. That is why a policy rate should not be presented as a universal per-visitor or per-day price. The agency sets out that qualification in its Commercial and Marketing Pricing Policy.
NASA’s mission page records that Axiom Missions 1 through 4 have flown, with Ax-4 launching in June 2025 for an 18-day stay. NASA has also announced later private-mission selections and target windows. These are privately funded ISS missions, distinct from NASA’s purchases of professional crew-rotation services. Why the figures are not directly comparable
A per-seat estimate, a multi-mission contract and a negotiated reimbursement can all be described as “spaceflight costs,” but they do not buy the same thing. Development and testing, crew training, cargo, ground operations, in-orbit support, return and recovery, and rescue capability can affect the scope. The 2020 OIG seat estimates exclude certain costs and rely on seat and flight assumptions; NASA’s 2026 SpaceX modification bundles multiple services. Neither can be treated as a current retail fare or compared as if each were simply a price for one passenger.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman described the broader commercial-mission context when NASA announced its fifth Axiom private astronaut mission on January 30, 2026: “The award of our fifth private astronaut mission shows that commercial space is not a distant promise, but a present reality.” The statement is from NASA’s announcement; it is not a price quote.

Can you use NASA’s numbers to find a personal ticket price?
No. The cited NASA figures establish contract awards, historical average seat-cost estimates and mission-specific agency reimbursements. They do not establish a current price paid directly by an individual for an orbital or suborbital fare. A provider’s dated, direct quote would be needed to substantiate a consumer price; NASA’s contract totals are not a substitute.
